  • In order to actively cope with international changes such as cessation of the Cold War in the twentieth century, the government has been proceeding the unification project between military and commercial specification leading to cost reduction of military supplies as well as to high effectiveness. Among these efforts, the study on raw materials specifications, which seems to have been widely used for military or commercial fields, has been performed. As the result of these studies, we have reformed military standards through surveying and summarizing military, KS and international specifications on raw materials. Consequently, the reduction of costs for the procurement of military supplies and the maintenance of current military specifications is to be expected.

  • Three-sided concrete culverts can be used to replace short span bridges and multiple sections(barrels) of four-sided concrete box culverts. ASTM Standards do not specify designs for four-sided concrete box culverts with span lengths exceeding 3.6m(12ft) nor do they discuss the three-sided concrete culverts. This paper describes the analysis and design of three-sided flat-top Precast reinforced concrete culverts with span length or 4m(14ft). Both AASHTO and Korean specifications were used to compare the main reinforcing steel. It is shown that the related provisions of Korean specifications result in more conservative design than those of AASHTO specifications.

  • The amended law of railway safety in Korea has recently come into effect in order to strengthen the railway safety management system. The new law, which took effect March 1, 2014, will implement stricter oversight of railway companies. As a result, a company that manufactures railroad system or components for domestic use must obtain an approval in accordance with the technical specifications of manufacturer approval. Although Korea had established the legal system in enforcing railway safety, the government wants the companies continue to develop the more improved safety systems until they gain competitive edge on the world class railway manufacturers. This paper presents an in-depth analysis of the technical specifications for manufacturer approval in International Railway Industry Standard (IRIS), which is the global standard. This paper also proposes measures and guidelines that would help Korean manufacturers those who want further develop their safety management systems, as a prerequisite for them to obtain the manufacturer approval.

  • Most motion control systems consist of a desired trajectory generator, a motion controller such as a conventional PID controller, and a plant to be controlled. The desired trajectory generator as well as the motion controller is very important to achieve a good tracking performance. Especially, if the desired trajectory is generated actively utilizing the maximum velocity, acceleration, jerk and snap as given system specifications, the tracking performance would be better. For this, we make use of the properties of convolution operator in order to generate a smooth (S-curve) trajectory satisfying the system specifications. Also, the proposed trajectory generation method is extended to more general cases with arbitrary initial and terminal conditions. In addition, the suggested trajectory generator can be easily realized for real-time implementation. Finally, the effectiveness of the suggested method is shown through numerical simulations.

  • Product reliability plays a significantly important role these days. This study has been performed to examine the widely being used specifications, MIL-HDBK-217 and SR-332 for electronic parts. We specifically selected an electronic ballast of the low wattage fluorescent lamp for the study. We briefly reviewed the reliability specifications with the basic concepts of the ballast. We then valuated failure rates of the parts using MIL-HDBK-217 and SR-332 specifications. Since the quality and environment factor values are subjectively determined for failure rate evaluations, we excluded them for comparison.

  • A business process specification (BPS) plays the role of a contracted business scenario in the execution of the B2B business process instances. XML based specification languages, such as BPSS, WS BPEL, etc., are usually adopted for the specifications. However, composing complex XML based specifications are not easy for humans. As an alternative, graphical modeling languages such as UML and BPMN can be employed. This paper presents an UML based modeling method for graphically specifying ebXML BPSS instances (namely, business process specifications). UML diagrams, directly matching with ebXML BPSS, can be reused for understanding and generating ebXML BPSS instances. We discuss the value of the method by developing a business reference library in the area of supply chain management.

  • IEC 62304 is a standard for the medical device software lifecycle. Developers must develop software that complies with all specifications in the standard for licensing. However, because the standard contains not only a large number of specifications, but also domain-specific information and association relationships between specifications, it requires considerable effort and time for developers to understand and interpret the standard. To support developers, this paper presents a method for extracting the contents of the IEC 62304 standard as a goal model, which is the core methodologies of requirements engineering. The proposed method analyzes the grammar of the standard to robustly extract complex structures and various information from standard specifications and define rules that extract goals and links from syntactic element units. We validated the actual extraction process for the standard document experimentally. Based on the extracted goal model, developers can intuitively and efficiently comply with the standard and track specific information within the medical software and standard domains.
