  • Non-esterified biodiesel fuel is cheaper than esterified that because of a simple manufacturing process that only consists of filtering. Applicability of this on diesel engine with electronic control system was accomplished, then optimization adopting a fractional factorial design and response surface methodology was carried out at 25% and 50% of engine load in this study. Pressure of common rail and injection timing mainly effected on responses as specific fuel oil consumption and nitrogen oxides regardless of engine load. Estimations were 310.3 g/kWh of specific fuel oil consumption and 237 ppm of nitrogen oxides at 25% load, and 233.2 g/kWh of specific fuel oil consumption and 730 ppm of nitrogen oxides at 50% load. Tests to verify these estimations were accomplished and as the results, specific fuel oil consumption was 300.4 g/kWh and NOx was 277 ppm at 25% load and 236.8 g/kWh and 573 ppm at 50% load.

  • Sensitivity of aircraft sizing depending on battery performance was studied for a generic quad tilt rotor type electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicle. The mission requirements proposed by Uber Elevate and NASA were used for initial sizing, and the calculated gross weight is ranged between 5,000lb and 11,000lb for battery specific energy range of 200-400Wh/kg in pack level and continuous discharge rate range of 4-5C. For the assumed gross weight of 7,000lb, the required battery performance was calculated with two different criteria: available power and energy, and the effects of battery specific energy and discharge rate are analyzed. The maximum discharge rate is also recommended considering failure cases such as one battery pack inoperative and one prop rotor inoperative.

  • Simplified approach has been adopted for the prediction of the thermal behavior of CANDU reactor core during power transients. Based on the assumption that the ratio of mass flow rate for each core channel does not vary during the transient, quasy-steady state analysis technique is applied with predicted core inlet boundary conditions(total mass flow rate and specific enthalpy). For restricted transient case, the presented method shows functionally reasonable estimation of core thermal behavior which could be implemented in the fast running reactor simulation program.

  • This paper presents an axial flux permanent magnet synchronous generator with a high power-to-weight ratio, dedicated for small-scale gearless wind power generation plants. For this purpose, a specific design is necessary to meet the imposed requirements. In this paper the design technique for the specifications is presented. The aim of the paper is also to discuss some of the first obtained test results and the involved demagnetizing problem (i.e. short-circuit).

  • In this paper, some general results for obtaining recurrence relations between product moments of order statistics for doubly truncated distributions are established. These results are then applied to some specific doubly truncated distributions, viz. doubly truncated Weibull, Exponential, Pareto, power function, Cauchy, Lomax and Rayleigh.

  • This paper presents an comparative study on the effect of STATCOM and UPFC to power flow analysis of power systems. The effect of STATCOM can be analyzed with PSS/E program which is generally used in power system analysis, while UPFC model for power flow analysis is not provided yet. Thus, UPFC is equivalently represented as a synchronous condenser and load, while the active and reactive power of the specific transmission line and the voltage of the bus is controlled appropriately. This procedure is implemented by IPLAN which is an external macro program of PSS/E. The simulation results show that UPFC is more effective to control the bus voltage than STATCOM, because UPFC can control not only the bus voltage where the parallel inverter is installed but also the active and reactive power flow in the transmission line where the series inverter is installed.

  • A fully-integrated penta-band reconfigurable power amplifier (PA) is developed for handset Tx applications. The output structure of the proposed PA is composed of the fixed output matching network, power and frequency reconfigurable networks, and post-PA distribution switches. In this work, a new reconfiguration technique is proposed for a specific band requiring power and frequency reconfiguration simultaneously. The design parameters for the proposed reconfiguration are newly derived and applied to the PA. To reduce the module size, the switches of reconfigurable output networks and post-PA switches are integrated into a single IC using a $0.18{\mu}m$ silicon-on-insulator CMOS process, and a compact size of $5mm{\times}5mm$ is thus achieved. The fabricated W-CDMA PA module shows adjacent channel leakage ratios better than -39 dBc up to the rated linear power and power-added efficiencies of higher than around 38% at the maximum linear output power over all the bands. Efficiency degradation is limited to 2.5% to 3% compared to the single-band reference PA.

  • Despite the exponential throughput improvement in mobile communications systems, their ability to satisfy requirements of state-of-the-art and future applications of advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) is still under investigation. Challenges are mainly due to the inadequacy of third generation partnership project (3GPP) networks to support large amounts of devices simultaneously, while the number of AMI end-devices and the frequency of their data transmission increase with new AMI-based applications. In this introductory survey, innovative and future AMI applications and their communication requirements are first reviewed. Then, we identify challenges of 3GPP long term evolution (LTE) in enabling future AMI applications. More importantly, the latest improvements to LTE-A standard release 12 and 13 are reviewed and analyzed with regards to their potential to improve the quality of LTE-enabled AMI. It is found that 3GPP enhancements on machine type communications (MTC) standards will significantly enhance AMI communications. Beyond MTC specifications, non-MTC-specific enhancements such as carrier aggregation and multi-connectivity for user equipment will also contribute greatly to improving reliability and availability of AMI devices. The paper's focus is towards improved backhaul support for innovative and future AMI applications, beyond traditional automatic meter reading.
