  • Small clear specimens of Quercus acutissima Carr. and Larix caempferi Carr. were used to measure shrinkage and thermal conductivity for the reasonable and effective use. All samples were conditioned to 18, 12, 5% moisture contents in a humidity chamber of 86, 66, 20% relative humidity(RH), respectively and room temperature(23℃) All specimens were conducted on the shrinkage and thermal conductivity test at each MCs. These processes(cycle) were repeated three times. The radial and tangential shrinkages of Quercus acutissima Carr. and Larix caempferi Carr. decreased at each level of MCs, with the increasing cycles. The radial and tangential shrinkages increased as the specific gravity(on oven-dry weight and volume basis) increased. Thermal conductivities of the radial and tangential direction of Quercus acutissima Carr. and Larix caempferi Carr. increased at each levels of MCs, with increasing cycles. Good correlations were obtained between shrinkages and thermal conductivities of radial and tangential direction, and specific gravity (on oven-dry weight and oven-dry volume basis) and MC.

  • The objective of this work was to examine the influence of carbonation on the microstructure of cement materials. Different materials, which were CEM I mortar and paste, CEM II mortar and paste, were carbonated at $20^{\circ}C$, 65 % relative humidity and 20 % of $CO_2$ concentration. The specific surface area and pore size distribution were determined from two methods: nitrogen adsorption and water adsorption. The results showed that: (1) nitrogen adsorption and water adsorption do not cover the same porous domains and thus, we observed conflicts in the results obtained by these two techniques; (2) the CEM II based materials seemed to be more sensible to a creation of mesoporosity after carbonation than the CEM I based materials. The results of this study also helped to explain why observations in the literature diverge greatly on the influence of carbonation on specific surface area.

  • Surface morphology and adsorption characteristics of charcoals prepared from Korean traditional kiln were analyzed, and their moisture adsorption capacities were examined with respect to humidity and temperature change. Moisture adsorption capacities of red-clay powder, activated carbon fiber fabric (ACF fabric) and activated carbon fiber paper(ACF paper) were also examined to compare with those of charcoals. Moisture adsorption capacity of charcoal was low less than 45% humidity due to its hydrophobic property, but it slowly and linearly increased as increasing the humidity. Moisture adsorption capacity of red-clay powder was similar to charcoal at low level humidity, it increased exponentially as increasing the humidity showing Type V adsorption isotherm. Therefore, the weather forecast annal prepared by employee of weather centre in Joseon Dynasty is experimentally approved. ACF fabric and ACF paper show excellent moisture adsorption capacities, which can be used to humidity measuring sensor. Adsorption isotherm of charcoal slice was peculear showing the mixed Type I and Type IV due to low-pressure hysteresis that was occurred from embedment of nitrogen in crevice of charcoal. The specific surface area of charcoal increased by grinding charcoal slice to powder, resulted in increasing the desorption amount of adsorbent at low relative pressure.

  • It is necessary to find out the reaction characteristics of $CaCO_3$ sorbent particles in air and $O_2/CO_2$ atmospheric conditions in order that an in-furnace desulfurization technique can be applied to oxy-fuel combustion system. In this study, rate of change of GMD(geometric mean diameter) and specific surface area of $CaCO_3$ sorbent particles reacted in DTF(drop tube furnace) experimental setup were analyzed to investigate the effect of particle size and humidity on the reaction characteristics of them. In air atmospheric condition, calcination process occurs actively within shorter residence times as the particle size increases. On the contrary, in $O_2/CO_2$ atmospheric condition, a calcination process is delayed as particle size increases. The increment of humidity accelerates calcination process in an air atmospheric condition and increase rate of calcination in an $O_2/CO_2$ atmospheric condition.

  • This fundamental study analyzes the relationship between rock thermal properties and psychrometric properties in underground space and has a ultimate goal to develope technologies for predicting major environmental variables. The study is divided into 2 subjects (1) developement of a basic model for predicting temperature and humidity, (2) analysis of the validity of the model through application to a local underground storage space for military supplies. The basic model is built for the network of tunnel-shaped underground spaces. The model takes into account rock thermal properties and changes in moisture content in the air due to condensation/evaporation on the rock surface. Using lumped-parameter analytical method, heat flux from or to the surrounding rock is calculated and then the psychrometric properties(air quantity, pressure, temperature, humidity) are estimated through network simulation. The model can be utilized regardless of the tunnel type. The study site is a local storage space built in rock, mainly granite gneiss and quartz-porphyry. It is a U-shaped tunnel, 593.5m long and 6x6.5m wide. Relative humidity inside has to be strictly controlled under 55% to avoid erosion of a certain types of supplies stored in 6 chambers with the capacity of 300~1.000 ton. The thermal conductivity varies between 2.734 and 2.779W/m$^{\circ}C$ and the thermal diffusivity is in the range of 1.119 and $1.152{\times}10^{-6}\;m^2/s$ the specific heat between 910 and $920\;J/kg^{\circ}C$. Relative errors of the predicted values of dry/wet temperature and relative humidity are 0.8~3.0%, 0~7.5% and 0~7.0%, respectively. Apparent errors associated with the rock surface temperature seems to be partly due to the intrinsic limitations in the infrared thermometer used in this study.

  • The stone Buddha and Shrine of Unjusa temple (Korean Treasure No. 797) at Hwasun formed in Koryo Dynasty is unique style which faces each other the back parts of south and north within the stone Shrine. The stone Buddha and Shrine is highly evaluated in historical, artistic and academic respects. But, the stone properties have been exposed in the open system various aspects of degradations weathered for a long time without specific protective facilities. To inquire into relative deterioration and environmental factor, air temperature and relative humidity of the stone Buddha and Shrine were monitored for a year of the indoor and outdoor, respectively. As a result, the temperature shows increase and decrease according to the seasons in the tendency to clear. While the relative humidity is high to keep all four seasons. Highly relative humidity environment induces dew condensation on the interior of stone Buddha and Shrine. The dew condensation is recorded at the spring, summer and winter season. The summer season is double the total of spring and winter season. In the case of summer, dew condensation is long time continued due to high temperature and relative humidity that is kept by more than nearly 100%. There is progress towards chemical weathering throughout dissolve rock properties and alteration on the rock surface. In the case of winter, dew condensation is not kept for a long time as summer. In the winter, which showing a below zero may add physical weathering throughout moisture that happen by dew condensation to repeat freezing and thawing. Therefore, the reduction plan of the relative humidity effect on dew condensation should be prepared.

  • We report on the building of a micro sensor array based on typical semiconductor fabrication processes aimed at monitoring selectively a specific gas in ambient of other gases. Chemical sensors can be applied for an electronic nose and/or robots using this technique. Microsensor array was fabricated on the same chip using 0.6${\mu}m$ CMOS technology, and unique gas sensing patterns were obtained by principal component analysis from the array. $SnO_2$/Pt sensor for CO gas showed a high selectivity to buthane gas and humidity. $SnO_2$ sensor for hydrogen gas, however, showed a low selectivity to CO and buthane gas. We can obtain more distinguishable patterns that provide the small sensing deviation(the high seletivity) toward a given analyte in the response space than in the chemical space through the specific parameterization of raw data for chemical image formation.
