A study on the Active Material FeS2 in Battery Fabricated by Mechanical Alloying

  • As the electrodes of secondary battery are made with sulfur compounds, excellent electrode system of environmental non-toxicity, high specific energy density and low material cost can be obtained. In this study, the $FeS_2$ fine compound powders for active material in the battery were synthesized by mechanical alloying. Fine Fe-53.5 wt.%S powders of 450 nm of mean size were fabricated by mechanical alloying for 60 hours at the horizontal attritor. As the mechanical alloying time increases, particle size of Fe-53.5 wt.%S was decreased and steady state of Fe-53.5 wt.%S compound powders was obtained at 30 hours. Fe-53.5 wt.%S cathode shows the excellent discharge capacity (1011 mAh/g).

평행판식 유수분리기에서 분리판실의 유동특성에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Flow Characteristics for the Plate Chamber in Type of Oily Parallel Plate Water Separator)

  • According to the regulation of IMO, oil discharge from ships is allowed under 15ppm only and an oil filtering equipment is essential. However, for large ships using heavy fuel oil of over S.G 0.98 and viscosity 380cSt and system oil, it has been in difficulty to process with existing filtering type of oily water separator. A parallel plate type oily water separator which is one of gravity type separators can be used as an assistant equipment for the oil filtering system to meet the present IMO standard of 15 ppm, because it is an efficient method in dealing with a large amount of rich oil with high specific gravity. This work is focused on the fundamental investigation of the performance of the plate type oily water separator by visualization method and PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) measurement to acquire multi-point velocity data simultaneously. The experimental results showed that the space of the plates acts a significant role in separating process and it was found that an important point to minimize a vortex flow is to flow a large amount of fluid in space of the plates in order to promote the efficiency of separation.

Influence of DBD Plasma Exposure on Normal and Cancer Cells Activity

  • Non-thermal plasma has attracted medical researchers, since they showed higher apoptosis rate in cancer cells than normal cells. However, it is hard to conclude general cancer cell specific effect because comparison between normal and cancer cell activities after plasma treatment have not been reported yet. This research proposes a comparison of Dielectric Barrier Discharge (DBD) plasma effect on three normal cells lines and three cancer cells lines. We measured cell number, mitochondria activity (MTS assay) and amount of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) for three days. The results show that the number of cancer cells decreased more than normal cells following of exposure time. On the other hand, mitochondria activities and amounts of H2O2 increased following of exposure time. In addition, we found that DBD plasma exposure on cell suspension in media and media only illustrated no difference in mitochondria activity, H2O2 quantity, and cell number. Thus, we can confirm higher apoptosis rate in cancer cells which is related to the reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated by DBD plasma. The related molecular mechanisms were investigated further.

액중 전기선 폭발법을 이용한 비정질 탄소가 코팅된 주석 나노분말의 제조 및 전기화학적 특성 (Fabrication of Carbon-coated Tin Nano-powders by Electrical Wire Explosion in Liquid Media and its Electrochemical Properties)

  • Tin is one of the most promising anode materials for next-generation lithium-ion batteries with a high energy density. However, the commercialization of tin-based anodes is still hindered due to the large volume change (over 260%) upon lithiation/delithiation cycling. To solve the problem, many efforts have been focused on enhancing structural stability of tin particles in electrodes. In this work, we synthesize tin nano-powders with an amorphous carbon layer on the surface and surroundings of the powder by electrical wire explosion in alcohol-based liquid media at room temperature. The morphology and microstructures of the powders are characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The electrochemical properties of the powder for use as an anode material for lithium-ion battery are evaluated by cyclic voltammetry and a galvanometric discharge-charge method. It is shown that the carbon-coated tin nano-powders prepared in hexanol media exhibit a high initial charge specific capacity of 902 mAh/g and a high capacity retention of 89% after 50 cycles.

  • 중수로 원전에서 환경으로 방출되는 방사성탄소는 비록 소량이지만 반감기(5730년)가 길고 에너지(0.156MeV)가 높은 방사선을 내기 때문에 각별한 관리가 요구되는 핵종으로 다른 방사성 화합물보다 각별한 관리와 감시가 요구된다. C-14은 원자로 구조의 특성상 경수로에 비해 6배정도 많이 발생하며 방출되는 C-14의 약 90%는 감속재 계통이 차지하고 있고 주로 감속재 상층기체의 퍼지 및 배기 방출을 통해 환경으로 빠져나가게 된다. 본 연구는 발전소 계통 운전 및 중수 누설 등으로 인해 방출되는 C-14을 흡착, 제거할 수 있는 장치 개발에 초점을 맞추었으며 시험 운전결과, C-14 제거 성능이 매우 우수한 것으로 평가되었다.

  • 결정성 그린 코크스 상의 메조카본 마이크로비즈를 이용하여 약품 및 전기화학 부활 법을 적용하여 23 F/cc 급의 신형 고밀도 활성탄을 합성하였다. 전기화학 부활과정 중에 고성능을 발현하기 위한 전기화학 거동을 순차적인 전압인가법을 이용하여 검토하였다. 전기화학 부활의 유효전압은 높은 비표면적 활성탄의 표면활성 저하에 의해 적용전압에 무관하게 2.7~3.2 V로 확인되었다.

Uncertainty Analysis and Improvement of an Altitude TestFacility for Small Jet Engines

  • The verification and improvement of the measurement uncertainty have beenperformed in the altitude test facility for small gas turbine engines, which was built atthe Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) in October 1999. This test is performedwith a single spool turbojet engine at several flight conditions. This paper discussesthe evaluation and validation process for the measurement uncertainty improvements usedin the altitude test facility. The evaluation process, defined as tests before the facilitymodification, shows that the major contnbutors to the measurement uncertainty are theflow meter discharge coefficient, the inlet static and total pressures, the cell pressureand the fuel flow rate. The measurement uncertainty is focused on the primary parametersof the engine performance such as airflow rate, thrust and specific fuel consumption (SFC).The validation process, defined as tests after the facility modification, shows that themeasurement uncertainty, in seal level condition, is tmproved to the acceptable level throughthe facility modification. In altitude test conditions, the measurement uncertainties arenot improved as much as the uncertainty in sea level condition.

과불화탄소 제거를 위한 플라즈마 워터젯 스크러버 개발 (Development of a Plasma Waterjet Scrubber for the Reduction of PFCs)

  • Perfluorocarbons (PFCs) are widely used in semiconductor industry. These gases need to be removed efficiently because of their strong absorption of infrared radiation and long atmospheric lifetimes which cause the global warming effect. To destruct $CF_4$, a waterjet gliding arc plasma was designed and manufactured. The highest $CF_4$ destruction showed at waterjet plasma case, compared to plasma discharge only or water scrubber only, respectively. In addition, it could be known that the $CF_4$ destruction should be associated with the electron and OH radicals. The operating conditions such as waterjet flow rate, initial $CF_4$ concentration, total gas flow rate, specific energy input were investigated experimentally using a plasma waterjet scrubber. Through the parametric studies, the highest $CF_4$ destruction of 94.5% was achieved at 0.2% $CF_4$, 2.1 kJ/L SEI, 20 L/min total gas flow rate and 18.5 mL/min waterjet flow rate.

중추성 요붕증 1례 (Central Diabetes Insipidus. A Case Report)

  • Central diabetes insipidus(CDI) results from deficient vasopressin(antidiuretic hormone) secretion and causes polydipsia and polyuria. Its etiologic diagnosis is confirmed with an increase of urine osmolality by administering desmopressin(DDAVP) after water restriction. Because cm is caused by deficiency of vasopressin, up to now, desmopressin, a synthetic analog of vasopressin, has been the drug of choice in the treatment of CDI. However, under such treatment, CDI patients suffer from the continual administration of DDAVP throughout one's life and high cost of the treatment We administrated oriental herb medicine on a cm patient in a state of discontinuance of DDAVP. Prior to the study, brain sella MRI was scanned to exclude germinoma. In addition, urine analysis, serum and urinary osmolality, daily urinary volume, serum electrolyte levels were measured. Chungsimyunjatang was administered for 15 days, and urine analysis, urine osmolality, daily urinary volume, serum Na were measured several times again during the therapy, As a result, urinary frequency increased, serum Na slightly elevated, but specific gravity of urine, urinary osmolality severely decreased and daily urinary volume substantially increased. However, the frequency of DDAVP treatment was reduced from four times per day to once or twice a day with the continual administration of the Chungsimyunja-tang for two months after the discharge.

하이브리드 (활성탄소+LiCoO2) 전극의 전기화학적 특성 (Electrochemical Performance of Hybrid (Activated Carbon+LiCoO2) Electrode)

  • In this study, the hybrid electrodes, composed of the activated carbon powders and $LiCoO_{2}$ powders, were prepared as a cathode for the high-capacitance type hybrid capacitor, and the electrochemical properties of the hybrid electrodes were examined in terms of the weight composition and the milling time of $LiCoO_{2}$ powders. The specific volumetric capacities were increased with increasing of the composition of $LiCoO_{2}$ powders in the hybrid electrodes. On the other hand the coin cell capacitors, using the hybrid electrodes with $LiCoO_{2}$ poweders milled for 200 h, have exhibited the lower internal resistivities and the better capacity retention after 100 charge-discharge cycle than those of the coin cell capacitors using the hybrid electrodes with raw $LiCoO_{2}$ powders.
