  • The fishways on Namdae-cheon and Osib-cheon and the use of migratory fishes were investifated from July 1998 through Jung 1999. There are three types of fishways on these rivers. Those are baffled fishways, fish ladder, and fish ladder with gabion. Namdae-cheon has 7 baffled fishways and 19 fish ladder, and Osib-cheon has only fish ladder with gaboin. On Namdae-cheon 1,195 fishes of 24 species were collected. Amog these fishes 241 fishes of 9 species were anadromous fishes occupying 38% in species and 19% in number. On Osib-cheon 1,015 fishes of 24 species were collected. Among these fishes 240 fishes of 5 species were anadromous fishes occupying 21% in species and 24% in number. On Namdae-cheon the species number and auundance decreased gradually upstream. The poor structure of fishways seems to have worked as an obstacle to the upstream migration of fishes on Namdae-cheon. On Osib-cheon all the observed fish species except three -spined stickleback(Gasterosteus aculeatus aculeatus) which stay and spawn around downstream of river could migrate upstream. The good structure of fishways on this river is thought to have helped upstream fish migration.

  • Age and growth of whitespotted conger Conger myriaster were estimated using right sagittal otoliths from 495 fish collected from February, 2004, to January, 2005, in the southern coastal waters of Korea. Examination of the outer margin of the otoliths showed that opaque zones formed once a year and annual rings formed from April to June. The ages of the specimens examined ranged from 3 to 8 years. Whitespotted conger spawn from December to March. Allometry between preanal length and total weight can be expressed as $TW=0.0350{\times}PL^{2.9173}$ ($R^2=0.89$). There was no significant difference in allometry between females and males (P>0.05). The estimated VBF growth equation was $L_t=415.2(1-e^{-0.1457(t+0.4654)})$.

  • Factors influencing spawning or respawning conditions of the bitterling, Acheilognathus signifer were investigated in the aquariums. Inducing the female spawning was more sensitive to the mussel than the male. The ovipositor of the female was periodically elongated and reduced from 4 to 6 days with the presence of mussel. During of the elongated state of the ovipositor was 1 to 2 days. As the result of natural spawning in the aquariums, it takes 1 to 3 days (mean 1.6) to spawn. The most important factor to respawn spawned females again was the mussel. It takes 11 to 53 days (mean 29.5) from extraction to reextraction of females which have elongated ovipositor. The egg numbers of reextraction were 2 to 41 (mean 19). This experiments showed the tendency the more standard length of females grows, the more the number of extracted eggs increases.

  • Calocybe indica, a tropical edible mushroom, is popular because it has good nutritive value and it can be cultivated commercially. The current investigation was undertaken to determine a suitable substrate and the appropriate thickness of casing materials for the cultivation of C. indica. Optimum mycelial growth was observed in coconut coir substrate. Primordia initiation with the different substrates and casing materials was observed between the 13th and 19th day. The maximum length of stalk was recorded from sugarcane leaf, while diameter of stalk and pileus, and thickness of pileus were found in rice straw substrate. The highest biological and economic yield, and biological efficiency were also obtained in the rice straw substrate. Cow dung and loamy soil, farm-yard manure, loamy soil and sand, and spent oyster mushroom substrates were used as casing materials to evaluate the yield and yield-contributing characteristics of C. indica. The results indicate that the number of effective fruiting bodies, the biological and economic yield, and the biological efficiency were statistically similar all of the casing materials used. The maximum biological efficiency was found in the cow dung and loamy soil casing material. The cow dung and loamy soil (3 cm thick) was the best casing material and the rice straw was the best substrate for the commercial cultivation of C. indica.

  • Phlebopus spongiosus is a well-known edible ectomycorrhizal mushroom indigenous to southern Vietnam. The mushroom specimens collected from northern Thailand in this study were identified as P. spongiosus. This identification was based on morphological characteristics and the multi-gene phylogenetic analyses. Pure cultures were isolated and the relevant suitable mycelial growth conditions were investigated. The results indicated that the fungal mycelia grew well on L-modified Melin-Norkans, and Murashige and Skoog agar all of which were adjusted to a pH of 5.0 at 30 ℃. Sclerotia-like structures were observed on cultures. The ability of this mushroom to produce fruiting bodies in the absence of a host plant was determined by employing a bag cultivation method. Fungal mycelia completely covered the cultivation substrate after 90-95 days following inoculation of mushroom spawn. Under the mushroom house conditions, the highest amount of primordial formation was observed after 10-15 days at a casing with soil:vermiculite (1:1, v/v). The primordia developed into a mature stage within one week. Moreover, identification of the cultivated fruiting bodies was confirmed by both morphological and molecular methods. This is the first record of P. spongiosus found in Thailand and its ability to form fruiting bodies without a host plant.

  • We inoculated the spawn of Inonotus obliquus on living trees of Betula platyphylla var. japonica, and could get several fruiting bodies from the inoculations. The fruiting body showed almost the same feature of that collected from natural habitats in Korea, while the size was much smaller than that of natural one. The diameter of the fruiting body ranged from 1.1 cm to 4.8 cm, and the height 0.5 cm to 2.0 cm. We expect that a harvest is possible within 5 years, but need to check the growth rate of the fruiting body to decide suitable time for getting more economic value.

  • The study carried out a 15-day feeding trial of the fleshy shrimp broodstock that have just finished their first spawn using five different maturation feed types (three types of manufactured feed, fresh feed, and commercial feed) to induce multiple spawning in the shrimp and then analyzed and compared hemolymph levels of total protein, total lipid, hemocyanin, glucose, and cholesterol as well as ovary histology between the treatments to identify the potential of the experimental diets to be utilized as maturation feed. The study found that the manufactured diets of polychaetes + clam and polychaetes + clam + squid resulted in significantly higher levels of lipid and protein in shrimp hemolymph suggesting an indicator of multiple spawning in the fleshy shrimp. The other manufactured diet of polychaets + squid led to the highest 2nd spawning with significantly lower levels of lipid, protein, and cholesterol in shrimp hemolymph. The fresh feed treatment showed similar hematological as well as histological responses to the manufactured diet of polychaetes + squid, but with a significantly lower spawning volume compared to the other treatments. The study demonstrated that the manufactured diets could replace fresh feed as maturation feed and attain a higher shrimp maturation than the commercial feed.

  • Mushroom is very important to rural dwellers due to the various economic, health and nutritional benefits that can be derived from its consumption, sales and utilization. Hence, this experiment was carried out with a view to evaluating the influence of locally available substrate i.e., sawdust of different wood species on the cultivation of Pleurotus ostreatus (oyster mushroom). Pleurotus ostreatus was grown on sawdust (indigenous and exotic species) using two pretreatment methods, which included hot water treatment to remove (a water-soluble extract) and non-extracted sawdusts (substrate). The result of this study showed that there was a significant difference in the effect of different wood species selected. Parkia biglobosa produced a better yield (71.06 g), followed by Anogeissus leiocarpus (53.17 g) and Gmelina arborea (51.39 g) in a non-treated unextracted states. In the treated samples, Parkia biglobosa has the highest yield (50.61 g) followed by Anogeissus leiocarpus (49.28 g) and Gmelina arborea (45.00 g). Thus, Parkia biglobosa and Anogeissus leiocarpus produced a higher yield of mushroom either in a treated or non-treated state and they could be recommended for growing oyster mushroom (Pleurotus ostreatus).
