The term residence time is defined as the time taken for substances in a system to leave the system and is a useful concept to explain the physical environment characteristics of a coastal area. It is important to know the spatial characteristics of the residence time to understand the behavioral properties of pollutants generated in a marine system. In this study, the spatial distribution of average residence time was calculated for Gangjin Bay, Korea, using a hydrodynamic model including a particle tracking module. The results showed that the average residence time was about 10 days at the surface layer and about 20 days at the bottom layer. Spatially, this was the longest residence time in the southwestern sea. There was no significant difference in average residence time at the surface layer due to freshwater discharge, but spatial variation at the bottom layer was larger. The average residence time at the bottom layer decreased in the southwestern area due to freshwater discharge and increased in the northern area. This result suggests that the residence time of anthropogenic pollutants may have a large spatial difference depending on the freshwater discharge, and thus the time taken to influence cultured organisms may also vary.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the spatial distribution characteristics and spatial changes of Automatic Weather Stations (AWS) in mountainous areas with altitude more than 200 meters in South Korea. In order to analyze the spatial distribution patterns, spatial analysis was performed on 203 Automatic Mountain Meteorology Observation Station (AMOS) points from 2012 to 2016 by Euclidean distance analysis, nearest neighbor index analysis, and Kernel density analysis methods. As a result, change of the average distance between 2012 and 2016 decreased up to 16.4km. The nearest neighbor index was 0.666632 to 0.811237, and the result of Z-score test was -4.372239 to -5.145115(P<0.01). The spatial distributions of AMOSs through Kernel density analysis were analyzed to cover 129,719ha/a station in 2012 and 50,914ha/a station in 2016. The result of a comparison between 2012 and 2016 on the spatial distribution has decreased about 169,399ha per a station for the past 5 years. Therefore it needs to be considered the mountainous regions with low density when selecting the site of AMOS.

The Ministry of Environment(ME) has been producing and providing various environmental spatial information including land-cover maps in order to effectively cope with environmental issues. With the advent of the 4th industrial revolution era and the frequent occurrence of environmental disasters, the necessity of combining the environmental spatial information with the newest technology is increasing. By considering the increased necessity, the ME and the Korean Society of Remote Sensing held the 2017 Environmental Spatial Information Research Paper Competition with the aim of both discovering new application fields of environmental spatial information and supporting outstanding researchers. The outstanding 9 papers were finally selected after reviewing 51 papers submitted for the competition. This special issue includes the 9 papers that address advanced methodologies and application results based on environmental spatial information, as well as recent environmental issues. We expect the methodologies and applications presented in this special issue would be a reference anthology for users of environmental spatial information.

Numerical simulations were carried out to investigate the impact of SST spatial distribution on the result of air quality modeling. Eulerian photochemical dispersion model CAMx (Comprehensive Air quality Model with eXtensions, version 4.50) was applied in this study and meteorological fields were prepared by RAMS (Regional Atmospheric Modeling System). Three different meteorological fields, due to different SST spatial distributions were used for air quality modeling to assess the sensitivity of CAMx modeling to the different meteorological input data. The horizontal distributions of surface ozone concentrations were analyzed and compared. In each case, the simulated ozone concentrations were different due to the discrepancies of horizontal SST distributions. The discrepancies of land-sea breeze velocity caused the difference of daytime and nighttime ozone concentrations. The result of statistic analysis also showed differences for each case. Case NG, which used meteorological fields with high resolution SST data was most successfully estimated correlation coefficient, root mean squared error and index of agreement value for ground level ozone concentration. The prediction accuracy was also improved clearly for case NG. In conclusion, the results suggest that SST spatial distribution plays an important role in the results of air quality modeling on high ozone episode at coastal region.

The purpose of this study is to understand distribution of ozone concentration in the south coastal region of Korea by evaluating ozone spatial distribution in the upper air using aircraft. Sampling was carried out from May to August in 2009. The average concentration of ozone in the upper air was ranged from 32.3~90.8 ppb with its maximum concentration of 132 ppb. When it comes to the spatial distribution of ozone, ambient concentration was high in the air, 1,000 m and 500 m above the southern sea near the Gwangyang Bay area and emission sources, respectively. Daily mean concentration of NOy was 6.7~24.2 ppb and that of CO was 0.152~0.487 ppm. In addition, the concentration was appeared to be relatively high in the upper air of industrial regions and the southern seas. Meanwhile, the concentration of both $NO_y$ and CO was high in the upper air of the emission sources regardless of latitude. As for PAN, its daily mean concentration ranged between 0.1 and 0.6 ppb with overall mean concentration of 0.2 ppb. The average concentration of VOCs was 48 ppb, and the concentration of toluene and m,p-Xylene were higher than other components.
Because groundwater recharge shows spatial-temporal variability due to climatic conditions, it is necessary to investigate land use and hydrogeological heterogeneity, and estimate the spatial variability in the daily recharge rate based on an integrated surface-groundwater model. The integrated SWAT-MODFLOW model was applied to compute physically based daily groundwater recharge in the Jincheon region. The temporal variations in estimated recharge were calibrated using the observed groundwater head at several National Groundwater Monitoring Stations and at automatic groundwater-monitoring sites constructed during the Basic Groundwater Investigation Project (2009-2010). For the whole Mihocheon watershed, including the Jincheon region, the average groundwater recharge rate is estimated to be 20.8% of the total rainfall amount, which is in good agreement with the analytically estimated recharge rate. The proposed methodology will be a useful tool in the management of groundwater in Korea.

The objective of this paper is to explore the short-term variability of sea surface temperature (SST) and chlorophyll a (Chl-a) derived from satellite in the upwelling region of the southeast coast of Korea in summer. We particularly emphasize the spatial variability of SST and Chl-a in the East Korean Warm Current (EKWC) during summer monsoon. Spatial distribution of SST and Chl-a in the EKWC are described using SeaWiFS and AVHRR images in August, 2007. Spatial distribution of SST and Chl-a around EKWC can be classified into four categories in the profile of SST and Chl-a images: (1) coastal cold water region, (2) cold water region of thermal front, (3) warm water region, (4) cold water of offshore region.

We, for the first time, developed a Raman lidar system which can remotely detect surface CO2 volume mixing ratio (VMR). The Raman lidar system consists of the Nd: YAG laser of wavelength 355 nm with 80 mJ, an optical receiver, and detectors. Indoor CO2 cell measurements show that the accuracy of the Raman lidar system is calculated to be 99.89%. We carried out the field measurement using our Raman lidar at Pukyong National University over a seven-day period in October 2019. The results show good agreement between CO2 VMRs measured by the Raman lidar (CO2 Raman Lidar) and those measured by in situ instruments (CO2 In situ) which located 300 m and 350 m away from the Raman lidar system. The correlation coefficient (R), mean absolute error (MAE), and root mean square error (RMSE) between CO2 In situ and CO2 Raman Lidar are 0.67, 2.78 ppm, and 3.26 ppm, respectively.

A locally adapted plant population under harsh environmental changes might survive for a long generation through maintaining proper level of genetic diversity. When it happens losing the genetic diversity too much fast, the population could be declining and probably become extinct. An isolated small population of Populus davidiana was investigated to study out the genetic diversity and the fine-scale spatial genetic structure. The estimated number of adult trees in the population of Mt. Worak, South Korea, was 350 in the total area of $14,000m^2$. The number of adults in a study plot ($70m{\times}70m$) was 123. The average age was 16-year-old and a 32-year-old tree was the oldest. The distribution of individuals was slightly aggregated in the plot. Sixty-one among the 123 individuals were randomly sampled to estimate genetic variation using AFLP markers. One hundred fifty-one (77%) of total 196 amplicons were polymorphic from six AFLP primer combinations. The average number of loci per primer combination was 32.7 (S.D.=7.2). Expected heterozygosity ($H_e$) and Shannon's diversity index (S.I.) were 0.154 and 0.254, respectively. These values were extremely lower than those of other P. davidiana populations in South Korea. Genetic patchiness was showed within 21 meters by spatial autocorrelation analysis and the isolated small size of population might be mainly attributed to the formation of such small patch size.

Reliable forest statistics provides important information to meet the UNFCCC. In this respect, the national forest inventory has played a crucial role to provide the reliable forest statistics for several decades. However, the previous forest statistics calculated by administrative district has not provided spatial information in a small scale. Thus, this study focused on developing models to estimate an explicit spatial distribution of forest growing stock. For this, first, stand volume model by stand types was developed using National Forest Inventory(NFI) data. Second, forest type map was integrated with this model. NFI data were used to calculate plot-level stand volume and basal area. The stand types of NFI plot including the species composition, age class, DBH class and crown density class are very crucial data to be connected with forest type map. Finally, polygonlevel stand volume map was developed with spatial uncertainty map. Average stand volume was estimated at 85.7 $m^3$/ha in the study area, and at 95% significance interval it was ranged from 79.7 $m^3$/ha to 91.8 $m^3$/ha.
