  • For the artistic column used by Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastic(GFRP), the connection of steel with GFRP were needed. Due to the fabricating characteristics of hand laminating, GFRP surfaces had to be connected. Because there were no existed data of these connection, experimental study has to be followed so that the structural strength and buckling mode could be investigated. In this paper, therefore, the axial tests of steel with GFRP were performed. The connection of GFRP's surfaces could be also tested as well. As a result, it could be figured out that the strength of these connections were determined by the adhesive strength.

  • Concrete-filled steel columns consist of circular, square or rectangular hollow sections filled concrete. Much research has studied for the behavior of concrete-filled steel structures. The advantages from structural point of view are the triaxial confinement of the concrete within the section, and the fire resistance of the column which largely depends on the residual capacity of the concrete core. The axial capacity of a concrete-filled rectangular or circular section is enhanced by the confining effect of the steel section on the concrete which depends in the magnitude on the shape of the section and the length of the column. Buckling tends to reduce the benefit of confinement on the squash load as the column slenderness increases. In circular sections it is possible to develop the cylinder strength of the concrete. When compare with reinforced concrete columns, the concrete-filled composite column possesses much better strength and ductility in shear and generally in flexure also. Many researches are being conducted about concrete filled steel column to get these advantages in building design. In this paper it is provided to the basic experimental study of compression behavior of the circular and rectangular tubular steel pipe filled with concrete.

  • The dynamic instability for snapping phenomena has been studied by many researchers. Few paper deal with the dynamic bucking under the load with periodic characteristics, and the behavior under periodic excitation is expected the different behavior against STEP excitation. We investigate the fundamental mechanisms of dynamic instability when shallow EP(Elliptic Paraboliodal) shell of two degree of freedom are subjected to sinusoidal excitation with direct snapping and indirect snapping. By using Newmark-$\beta$ method, we can get the nonlinear response, and characteristics of the dynamic instability through the running response spectrum by FFT(fast Fourier Transform) and attractors are compared in the phase plane. Dynamic buckling loads are strongly influenced by the relationships between the natural frequency of structures and the dominant frequency of incident excitations.

  • The object of this paper is to evaluate on behavior the experimentally of beam-to-column joints for modular steel frame with the hollow structural steel section to LEB C-shape. Beam-to-column joints carried out test on the joint shape bracket-type and welded-type to consideration which the joints for modular steel frame was capacity, deformation and failure mode. Test of results, the beam-column joints decided to the lateral buckling strength in LEB C-shape regardless of joint-shape and joint failure. The strength & stiffness for joints increase as the bracket-thickness. The results from theory of lateral buckling are compared to the experimental results. The ratio of experimental results to theory value is $0.83{\sim}0.95$ in the case of bracket-type and welded-type of $0.87{\sim}0.9$, indicating an accurate and safe estimation.

  • An improved formulation of thin-wailed curved beams with variable curvatures based on displacement field considering the second order terms of finite semitangential rotations is presented. From linearized virtual work principle by Vlasov's assumptions, the total potential energy is derived and all displacement parameters and the warping functions are defined at cendtroid axis. In developing the thin-walled curved beam element having eight degrees of freedom per a node, the cubic Hermitian polynomials are used as shape functions. In order to verify the accuracy and practical usefulness of this study, free vibrations and buckling analyses of parabolic and elliptic arche shapes with mono-symmetric sections are carried out and compared with the results analyzed by ABAQUS' shell element.

  • This study discusses the inelastic behavior of single-layer latticed dome, composed of tubular truss member and newly proposed joint sections, through loading test on the scale-down structure. The loading test was performed under displacement control conditions, using loading transfer system for the same value of point loads on all joints. Maximum applied load was nearly 1.6 times of the design load, and inelastic buckling occured beyond compressive yeilding in some members. The displacement of structure was maimtained upto the limit of oil jack. The behavior of latticed dome from the loading test was analyzed on the view of structural design practice.

  • The cable structure is a kind of ductile structural system using the tension cable and compression column as a main element. From mechanical characteristics of the structural material, it is profitable to be subjected to the axial forces than bending moment or shear forces. And we haweto consider the local buckling when it is subjected to compression forces, but tension member can be used until the failure strength. So we can say that the tension member is the most excellent structural member. Cable dome structures are made up of only the tension cable and compression column considering these mechanical efficiency and a kind of structural system. In this system, the compression members are connected by using tension members, not connected directly each other. Also, this system is lightweight and easy to construct. But, the cable dome structural system has a danger of global buckling as external load increases. That is, as the axisymmetric structure is subjected to the axisymmetric load, the unsymmetric deformation mode is happened at some critical point and the capacity of the structure is rapidly lowered by this reason. This phenomenon Is the bifurcation and we have to reflect this in the design process of the large space structures. In this study, We investigated the nonlinear unstable phenomenon of the Geiger, Zetlin and Flower-type cable dome.

  • In this paper, a discrete optimum design program was developed using the refined fuzzy-genetic algorithms based on the genetic algorithms and the fuzzy theory. The optimum design in this study can perform section and shape optimization simultaneously for planar and spatial steel structures. In this paper, the objective function is the weight of steel structures and the constraints are the design limits defined by the design and buckling strengths, displacements, and thicknesses of the member sections. The design variables are the dimensions and coordinates of the steel sections. Design examples are given to show the applicability of the discrete optimum design using the improved fuzzy-genetic algorithms in this study.

  • This study presents a thin-walled space frame element based on the classical Timoshenko beam theory. The element is derived according to the assumed strain field in order to resolve the shear-locking phenomenon. The shape function is developed in accordance with the strain field which is assumed to be constant at a 2-noded straight frame element. In this study, the geometrically nonlinear analysis applies the Corotational procedure in order to evaluate unbalanced loads. The bowing effect is also considered faithfully. Two numerical examples are given; monosymmetric curved and nonsymmetric straight cantilever. When these example structures behave lateral-torsional bucking, the critical loads are obtained by this study and ABAQUS shell elements. Also, the post-buckling behavior is examined. The results give good agreement between this study and ABAQUS shell.

  • To improve the land use of urban, Construction of the circular steel column is required recently. The circular steel columns have a advantage for improving a load carrying capacity as wall as reducing a effective section area. However, the circular steel columns under service load, such as earthquake, shows a tendency to cause local buckling and large deformation. To prevent these phenomena, use of diaphragm is considered. It is reported that longitudinal stiffeners has a effect on improving a buckling and fatigue performance of steel structures. The research of effect on diaphragm is not sufficient. Under monotonic and cyclic loadings diaphragm make a important role to prevent local buckling and deformation of used steel structures. Therefore, influence of diaphragm on performance of used steel structures is investigated. In this study, the influence of diaphragm on seismic and deformation performance of circular steel piers was investigated by using elastic-plastic finite element analysis considered geometrical and material non-linearity. The seismic performance of circular steel columns was evaluated for analytical parameter of manufactured part. The seismic performance of circular steel columns was clarified by comparing an energy dissipation of circular steel piers.
