  • The effect of the rib angle-of-attack on heat transfer in the convergent channel with ${\vee}/{\wedge}$-shaped ribs was examined experimentally. Four differently angled ribs (a = $30^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$, $60^{\circ}$, and $90^{\circ}$) were placed to only the one sided wall. The ribbed wall was manufactured with a fixed rib height (e) of 10 mm and rib spacing (p)-to-height (e) ratio of 10. The convergent channel had a length of 1,000 mm and a cross-sectional areas of $100mm{\times}100mm$ at inlet and $50mm{\times}100mm$ at exit. The measurement was conducted for the Reynolds numbers ranging from 22,000 to 75,000. The results show that the Nusselt number is generally higher at higher Reynolds number and that an angle-of-attack of $45^{\circ}$ at the ${\wedge}$-shaped rib produces the greatest Nusselt number.

  • For the eco-friendly control of fruit rot of fig, disease incidences according to the cultural practices at 51 fig orchards in south coast area of Korea were surveyed in 2002, and the effect of soil mulch and potassium phosphonate on fruit rot of fig was evaluated from 2002 to 2004. Diseased fruits of fig orchards of open field, rain shading, and vinyl house were 33.3%, 7.5%, and 0%, respectively. Diseased fruits were rated at 34.6%, 35.7%, and 27% as the tree spacing of $2m{\times}2m,\;2m{\times}3m,\;and\;3m{\times}4m$, respectively. Among the soil mulching materials, barley straw showed disease incidence of 1.8% and 3.5% of diseased fruits compared to 42.1% and 48% of no mulching in 2002 and 2003, respectively. Diseased fruits in dark paper film mulching were recorded at 4.8% and 12% in 2002 and 2003, respectively, which were lower than those in dark polyethylene film mulching at 11.2% and 26.2%. When potassium phosphonate(1,000 ppm) was sprayed 3 times with 10 days intervals from the beginning of disease occurrence, disease incidences were rated at 3.0% and 2.0% in 2003 and 2004, respectively, which were much lower than those of control at 45.9 % and 39.3%.

  • Members of the Pumilio are the RNA binding proteins acting as translational repressors and required for germ cell development and asymmetric division. We identified chicken Pum1 and Pum2 that are similar to mouse and human in highly conserved C-terminal RNA-binding domain and eight tandem repeats. The comparative sequence analysis of Pum1 and Pum2 from fly, chicken, mouse and human shows high degree of evolutionary conservation in the homology of the peptide sequence and the structure of PUM-HD (Pumilio homology domain) with similar spacing between adjacent Pum repeats. Also, structures of chicken Pum1 and Pum2 genes are almost identical to those of mouse and human. We revealed that the expression levels of Pum1 and Pum2 were the highest in hatched female gonad among various embryonic tissues, and Pum2 expressed highly in 12-day and hatched gonad by real-time RT-PCR. These results suggest that Pum1 and Pum2 might have an effect on the development of chicken gonad.

  • In this paper, the risk of damages to humans and properties due to fire explosions in gasoline storage tanks is identified, and the effects of radiant heat on adjacent tanks are evaluated to present the necessary area to secure safety. A simulation was conducted to evaluate the effect of radiant heat (Maximum emission) on adjacent tanks in an oil storage tank fire due to environmental conditions (Wind speed and temperature) in the Northern Gyeonggi Province. The result indicated that the radiant heat released in the fire of an oil storage tank was increased by approximately 1.9 times by the maximum wind speed and the difference occurred in the range of 700~800 kW by the maximum temperature. If a storage tank fire occurs, securing approximately 34.4 m of holding area is necessary. In the future, evaluating the radiant heat emitted by the fire of gasoline storage tanks will be required by applying various environmental conditions, and through this, research on specific and quantitative holding area is required.

  • Understanding characteristics of claypan soils has long been an issue for researchers and farmers because the high-clay subsoil has a pronounced effect on grain crop productivity. The claypan restricts water infiltration and storage within the crop root zone, but these effects are not uniform within fields. Conventional techniques of identifying claypan soil characteristics require manual probing and analysis which can be quite expensive; an expense most farmers are unwilling to pay. On the other hand, farmers would be very interested if this information could be obtained with easy-to-use field sensors. Two examples of sensors that show promise for helping in claypan soil characterization are soil profile strength sensing and bulk soil apparent electrical conductivity (ECa). Little has been reported on claypan soils relating the combined information from these two sensors with grain crop yield. The objective of this research was to identify the relationships of sensed profile soil strength and soil EC with nine years of crop yield (maize and soybean) from a claypan soil field in central Missouri. A multiple-probe (five probes on 19-cm spacing) cone penetrometer was used to measure soil strength and an electromagnetic induction sensor was used to measure soil EC at 55 grid site locations within a 4-ha research field. Crop yields were obtained using a combine equipped with a yield monitoring system. Soil strength at the 15 to 45 cm soil depth were significantly correlated to crop yield and ECa. Estimated crop yields from apparent electrical conductivity and soil strength were validated with an independent data set. Using measurements from these two sensors, standard error rates for estimating yield ranged from 9 to 16%. In conclusion, these results showed that the sensed profile soil strength and soil EC could be used as a measure of the soil productivity for grain crop production.

  • Spatial variability of infiltration rates of 96 samples from Hwadong SiCL was studied by using geostatistical concepts. The measurement was made at the nodes of the regular grid consisting of 12 rows and 8 columns. Sample spacing within rows and columns was 3 and 2 meters, respectively. This study illustrated the use of variogram as a tool to identify the degree of dependency of the infiltration rate on the distance between pairs of measurements and how to take advantage of this dependency. Fractile diagram showed that the distribution of observation was approximately normal. The range of the variogram was about 7.4 meters. The minimum number of samples necessary to reproduce the results similar to the 96 measured values was 8 to 10. Coefficients of theoretical variogram function for computing kriged values and kriged varionces of nuogget effect, slope, and range were 0.444 cm/day, 0.003 cm/day, and 7.4 m, respectively.

  • The nuclear structures are composed of large diameter bars over No.36. If the hooked bars are used for anchorage of large diameter bars, too long length of the tail extension of the hook plus bend create congestion and make an element difficult to construct. To address those problems, headed bars were developed. Provisions of ACI 318-08 specify the development length of headed bars and ignore the effect of transverse reinforcement based on the background researches. However, if headed bars are used at the cut-off or lap splice, longitudinal reinforcements, which are deformed in flexural members, induce tensile stress in cover concrete and increase the tensile force in the transverse reinforcement. The object of this research is to evaluate the effects of transverse reinforcement on the anchorage capacity of headed bar so anchorage test with variable of transverse rebar spacing was conducted. Specimens, which can consider the behavior at the cut-off, were tested. Test results show that failure of specimen without transverse reinforcement was sudden and brittle with concrete cover lifted and developed stress of headed bars was less than half of yield strength of headed bars. On the other hand, in the specimen with transverse reinforcement, transverse rebar directly resist the load of free-end so capacity of specimens highly increased.

  • Tests and analyses were performed in this study to assess the shear strength of Reinforced Concrete(RC) members strengthened by the Near Surface Mounted(NSM) technique in shear, which is drawing attention as an alternative to the Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer(CFRP) bonding strengthening technique. Four-point bending tests were performed on 7 RC specimens without any shear reinforcement. The test variables such as the inclination of CFRP strip (45 degrees and 90 degrees), and the spacing of CFRP strip (250mm, 200mm, 150mm, 100mm) were considered. Through the testing scenarios, the effect of each test variable on the failure mode and the shear strength of the RC members strengthened by the NSM technique in shear were assessed. The test results show that the specimens with CFRP strips at 45 degrees go to failure as a result of the strip fracture, but the specimens with CFRP strips at 90 degrees go to failure as a result of the slip of strips. Strips at 45 degrees was the more effective than strips at 90 degrees, not only in terms of increasing beam shear resistance but also in assuring larger deformation capacity at beam failure. In addition, the RBSN analysis appropriately predicted the crack formation and the load-displacement response of the RC members strengthened by the NSM technique in shear.

  • A self-supported temporary excavation method called IER is normally applicable to excavation depth ranging from 6.0 m to 7.0 m though the method depends on ground condition and overburden load. Combining IER with another method is required in deeper excavation depth in order to maintain the structural stability of the IER. In this study, we performed model tests and 3D FE analysis to check the stability of the IER adopting soil nailing method, and to propose its effective installation method. The lateral displacement of the IER using soil nailing decreased by 92% of that of IER without soil nailing. Optimum design is possible for both economic feasibility and stability when interval spacing and length of soil nails is $1.5m(S_h){\times}0.75m(S_v)$ and 86% of excavation depth, respectively. Excavation depth using IER increases 1.71 times by adopting soil nailing in increment of lateral displacement of IER right before the last excavation stage.

  • In this paper, we showed the applicability of power symmetric MSSI(Mid-Span Spectral Inversion) to the long-haul WDM system with the channel interference due to FWM(Four Wave Mixing). And we showed the degree of performance improvement. We used 1 dB EOP(Eye-Opening Penalty) criterion so as to evaluate the degree of compensation dependent on the variation of chirp parameter of optical pulse for the various input power in high speed tansmission system. And we evaluated the maximum input power of channel be able to be the signal to crosstalk noise (SNR) above 20 dB in the transmission link with the channel interference due to FWM. Consequently the proposed MSSI compensation method is capable to transmitting the total 68 WDM channels simultaneously with a 0.4 nm channel spacing and 5.3 dBm maximum input power in a 10 Gbps transmission link. Therefore the proposed power symmetric MSSI compensation method may be very useful for the implementation of long-haul wideband WDM transmission systems with relatively high power and improved performance.
