  • Satellite payload can be classified as electro-optical payload, SAR, microwave radiometer, communication payload, navigation payload and so on in accordance with the mission objective. The technology of satellite payload was tried to be obtained through development of KOMPSAT series, COMS and STSAT in Korea. In this paper, the required technology for the development and world market trend of satellite payload were studied and described. Since KOMPSAT program has been started in 1994, technology status and future prospects of satellite payload in Korea are studied and analyzed.

  • The importance on the simulation of earth observation optical payloads has been recently emphasized in order to estimate on-orbit imaging performance of the payloads. The estimation should consider all aspects of payload development; design, manufacture, test, assembly, launch and space environment. Until recently several studies have been focused the evaluation of the individual factors rather than the integrated. This paper presents the development of an integrated payload simulator. The simulator analyzes the payload imaging performance based on MTF(Modulation Transfer Function) calculations of the major factors (Diffraction, Aberration, Detector integration, Image motion and etc.) and the simulator can generate realistic artificial earth images as taken by defined earth observation payloads. The simulator is developed for the use of evaluating pre- and post-launch imaging performance and assisting on-board calibration of COMPSAT-3.

  • Before an actual military communications satellite is designed and constructed, a feasibility study should take place. The basic functions of such system can be observed and demonstrated in an X-Band payload simulator. For this purpose a Payload Concept Model (PCM) for X-Band payload subsystem has been developed to simulate the workings of an actual military communications payload. This paper explains and illustrates the mechanical design, manufacture, and integration of the PCM. Basic RF tests also have been performed in order to verify the design requirement of the system. The results demonstrate successful development of the PCM and operation without RF losses.

  • Three noded plate and shell finite element and 3D beam element in conjunction with Lanczos method are used for studying the effect of boat tail angle on the free vibration characteristics of a typical payload fairing for three different cylinder diameters with height to diameter ratio 1.5. Configurations without boat tail structural member are also studied. One half of the one side fairing structure is considered for the analysis and symmetric boundary conditions are used.

  • Many recent satellites have mission periods longer than 10 years; thus, satellite-based local space weather monitoring is becoming more important than ever. This article describes the instruments and data applications of the Korea Space wEather Monitor (KSEM), which is a space weather payload of the GeoKompsat-2A (GK-2A) geostationary satellite. The KSEM payload consists of energetic particle detectors, magnetometers, and a satellite charging monitor. KSEM will provide accurate measurements of the energetic particle flux and three-axis magnetic field, which are the most essential elements of space weather events, and use sensors and external data such as GOES and DSCOVR to provide five essential space weather products. The longitude of GK-2A is $128.2^{\circ}E$, while those of the GOES satellite series are $75^{\circ}W$ and $135^{\circ}W$. Multi-satellite measurements of a wide distribution of geostationary equatorial orbits by KSEM/GK-2A and other satellites will enable the development, improvement, and verification of new space weather forecasting models. KSEM employs a service-oriented magnetometer designed by ESA to reduce magnetic noise from the satellite in real time with a very short boom (1 m), which demonstrates that a satellite-based magnetometer can be made simpler and more convenient without losing any performance.

  • This paper addresses EMC test results for the EQM Communications & Broadcasting Satellite(CBS) Ka-band Payload System. The aim of the EMC test is to verify that the payload system has no effect on the other system and is not affected by the external field. The compliance of EMC system requirements was verified by the analysis and measurement of the emission level from the payload system. The variation of performance by noise injection was measured to inspect the susceptibility of the payload system. The analysis and test results also showed that the electromagnetic interference has no serious effect on the overall payload system performance. It is confirmed that the EQM CBS Ka-band payload system can be operable in the space environment from the EMC performance's viewpoint. It is also obtained that better performance can be acquired by improving waveguide design and integration method.

  • The International Space Station (ISS) is being jointly developed by the following 16 international partners: The United States, Russia, Japan, Canada, Brazil, and the 11 member states of the European Space Agency. Assembly of ISS is a large-scale international program which commenced in November 1998, and is expected to conclude in 2006. Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) is making effort to take part in the development of Payload Support & Interface Module (PSIM) for ISS. When success is achieved with ISS PSIM development project, Korea will have the rights to utilize external attached payload sites and research activities on ISS. Therefore preparation for the utilization of ISS EXPRESS pallet, JEM-EF, and Columbus-EPF need to be made. This paper shows the investigation results of the external attached payload sites for ISS and the application field of space and Earth science.
