  • As the first step to investigate the nonlinear interactions between turbulence and marine structures inside a viscous NWT, a LES technique was applied to solve the turbulent channel flow for =150. The employed turbulence models included 4 types: the Smagorinsky model, the Dynamic SGS model, the Structure Function model, and the Generalized Normal Stress model. The simulated data in time-series for the LESs were averaged in both time and space, and statistical analyses were performed. The results of the LESs were compared with those of a DNS, developed in the present study and two spectral methods by Yoon et al.(2003) and Kim et a1.(1987). Based on this research, the accuracy of LESs has been found to be still related to the number of grids for fine grid size).

  • Rocket Based Combined-Cycle(RBCC) engines are currently being explored as advanced propulsion for space transportation. JAXA has been conducting RBCC engine research by using various experimental facilities. In order to clarify the experimental results and contribute to the improvement of designing, the analysis of the RBCC engine in an ejector-jet mode was carried out using the CFD code developed in-house for unstructured grids. CFD replicated the characteristic flow structures. The numerical simulation of the pumping performance of the ejector driven by different rocket gases(He, $N_2,\;A_r$) and physical conditions were performed, and their effects on the performance were studied.

  • Numerical simulations for dendritic growth of crystals are conducted in this study by the level set method. The effect of order of difference is tested for reinitialization error in simple problems and authors founded in case of 1st order of difference that very fine grids have to be used to minimize the error and higher order of difference is desirable to minimize the reinitialization error The 2nd and 4th order Runge-Kutta scheme in time and 3rd and 5th order of WENO schemes with Godunov scheme are applied for space discretization. Numerical results are compared with the analytical theory, phase-field method and other researcher's level set method.

  • In immersive virtual reality system, since virtual worlds do not supply users with sufficient spatial information af real world does, the users frequently experience clumsiness and roughness while manipulating virtual objects. To overcome this problem, we propose Visual Guider in this paper as a tool for enhancing user's visual space perception in immersive virtual worlds. The Visual Guider aids users to recognize exocentric distances between different scene points and egocentric distances from the observation point to other points in the scene fast and precisely. Its concept is imported from the rectangular grids frequently used in two-dimensional windows applications. We applied the proposed technique to an experimental virtual space implemented in $CAVE^(TM)-like$ system and tested its effectiveness while users grasp and move virtual objects.

  • Recently, much attention is imposed on the design of the fuel assemblies in the Pressurized Light Water Reactor (PWR). Spacer grid is one of the main structural components in a fuel assembly. It supports fuel rods, guides cooling water and protects the system from the external impact loads. Various space grids have been proposed and new designs are also being created. In this research, a new spacer grid is designed by the axiomatic approach. The Independence Axiom is utilized for the design. For conceptual design, functional requirements (FRs) are defined and corresponding design parameters (DPs) are found to satisfy FRs in sequence. Overall configuration and shapes are determined in this process. Detail design is carried out based on the result of the axiomatic design. For the detail design, the system performances are evaluated by using linear and nonlinear finite element analysis. The dimensions are determined by optimization. Some commercial codes are utilized for the analysis and design.

  • Thermo-acoustic waves can be generated in a compressible fluid by rapid heating and cooling near the boundary walls. These phenomena are very important mechanism of heat transfer in the space environment in which natural convection does not exist. In this study, the generation and transmission characteristics of thermo-acoustic waves in an air filled enclosure with rapid wall heating are studied numerically. The governing equations were discretized using control volume method, and were solved using PISO algorithm and second-order upwind scheme. For the stable solution time step were considered as t=1$\times$$10^{-9}$ order, and grids are 50$\times$800. The induced thermo-acoustic wave propagates through the fluid until it decays due to viscous and heat dissipation. The wave showed sharp front shape and decreased with long tail.

  • We present a real-time photomosaics method for small image set optimized by feature selection method. Photomosaics is an image that is divided into cells (usually rectangular grids), each of which is replaced with another image of appropriate color, shape and texture pattern. This method needs large set of tile images which have various types of image pattern. But large amount of photo images requires high cost for pattern searching and large space for saving the images. These requirements can cause problems in the application to a real-time domain or mobile devices with limited resources. Our approach is a genetic feature selection method for building an optimized image set to accelerate pattern searching speed and minimize the memory cost.

  • This work describes a study on the Analysis of Alternatives (AoA) based defense decision making. Future battle-space is transformed into a System of Systems (SoS) concept which is accomplished missions and their functions through network based battle management systems under forming their grids of various sensors and shooters in a single theater. The acquisition process is, therefore, changing over from single system requirements to capabilities based acquisition of SoS. AoA help to justify the need for starting, stopping, or continuing an acquisition program. AoA identify potentially viable solutions and provide comparative cost, effectiveness, and risk assessments of each solution to a baseline. The decision making must consider not only cost-effectiveness, risk, and military worth, but also domestic policy, foreign policy, technological maturity of the solution, the environment, the budget, treaties, and a host of additional factors. In this point of view, this paper analyzes AoA template which are critical elements of the defense decision making. From results of this analysis of AoA template for Korean acquisition environment are presented.

  • In this study, we investigated the generation of consecutive electrostatic solitary waves (ESWs) using by one-dimensional electrostatic particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation. For a given Gaussian perturbation, it is found that electron two-stream instability occurs in local grids region. Thus because of this instability, the electrostatic potential grows rapidly so as to be separated into electron and ion in perturbation region, and then electrons are trapped with heating during growing instability. It is found that these heated and trapped electrons are caused the generation of ESW, and ions are reflected backward and forward at the boundary of the initial perturbation, then form cold ion beam whereas electrons are confined to inside of the potential. Furthermore backward reflected ion beam forms ion holes by ion two-stream instability. On the other hand, as the confined electrons are released, and then released electrons also form hot electron beam, which play an important role in the generation of consecutive ESWs such as broadband electrostatic noise (BEN) observed frequently in space environment. Therefore the reason of the generation of consecutive ESWs is the existence of heated electrons which can sufficiently support energy to produce ESWs.
