  • These studies were performed to improve the reproductive efficiency of gilts and we investigated the effects of nursing periods after parturition and backfat thickness will adapt to these results for early selection of excellent gilts. The main results were as follows; 1. The backfat thickness in sows nursing for 17∼21 days was 19.19 mm, and 16.52 mm in 22∼26 days and longer nursing period affected significantly the backfat thinner (p<0.01). 2. The recurrence of estrus in sows nursing for 17∼21 days was 5.76 day and 5.62 day in 22∼26 days and there was no difference between nursing periods. 3. The recurrence of estrus in sows had 13∼16 mm backfat thickness was 5.69 day, 5.67 day in 17∼20 mm and 5.75 day in 21∼23 mm and there was no difference among backfat thickness. 4. The concentration of plasma estradiol were 28.49 pg/$m\ell$ in parturition, 12.39 pg/$m\ell$ in weaning and 16.52 pg/$m\ell$ in return of estrous. The concentration ot plasma progesterone were 1.50 ng/$m\ell$ in parturition, 0.69 ng/$m\ell$ in weaning and 0.94 ng/$m\ell$ in return of estrous. The concentration of plasma cortisol were 57.74 ng/$m\ell$ in parturition, 43.01 ng/$m\ell$ in weaning and 47.89 ng/$m\ell$ in return of estrous. There showed the highest level of estradiol, progesterone and cortisol in parturition.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the reproductive and weaned performances in sow farms, which located in Boryeong city, Chungnam. Data surveyed a total of 10,394 litters of sow recorded from April, 2007 to March, 2008 were collected and analyzed. The results obtained were as follows; 1. The average of number of sow and farrowing rate were 314.10 sows and 78.77%, respectively. And then, there was not significant difference among seasons in number of sows, but significant difference among season was found in farrowing rate (p<0.05). 2. The average of litter size at farrowing and at initial sucking were 11.04 and 10.22 pigs, respectively. The significant differences were not all found in litter size among seasons. 3. The number of pigs, age and growth rate at weaning were 9.23 pigs, 25.77 days and 91.48%, respectively. The significant differences among seasons were not found in number of pigs and age at weaning. However, there was significant difference in growth rate at weaning (P<0.05). 4. The average of farrowing rate of sows per year, pigs from sow per year (PSY), and body weight at marketing were 2.25 times, 20.75 pigs, and 110.46 kg, respectively. The significant differences among seasons were not found in farrowing rate per year and weight at marketing, but that was found only in PSY (p<0.05), respectively.

  • Offspring of 14 sows were used to evaluate the effect of yogurt substituted for creep feed on growth performance, diarrhea score and blood profiles. The piglets of sows were randomly allocated into 1 of 2 treatments (1 treatment separated piglets of 7 sows). The dietary treatments were as followed: CF, creep feed; YG, yogurt. The creep feed and yogurt diets were given from 3 d after piglets were born to the day of weaning (21 d after piglets were born). The body weight and feed consumption were weighed and recorded at d 0, 7, 14, and 21 after piglets were born for calculating average daily gain (ADG) and average daily feed intake (ADFI). At the weaning day, two piglets were randomly chosen from each pen and bled via jugular venipuncture to obtain blood samples for WBC and IgG measurement. All data were subjected to the GLM procedures of SAS (2002) as a randomized complete block design, with pen as the experimental unit. Differences among dietary treatments were separated by Duncan's multiple range test, and P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. No significant difference (P > 0.05) were observed in number of born piglets, weaning pigs, survival rate, body weight of piglets at d 0, 7, 14, and 21, ADG and ADFI. At d 21, piglets fed with creep feed had a higher (P < 0.05) IgG compared with piglets fed with yogurt. No significant difference (P > 0.05) was observed in WBC among treatments at d 21. In conclusion, yogurt substituted for creep feed had no adverse effect on growth performance in lactating piglets.

  • This is a case report of spinal cord abscess in pork carcasses. We have detected 7 cases with spinal cord abscesses in abattoir from January to October 2008. It may occur from either direct extension or hematogenos infection. Four cases were presumed by hematogenous infection because of no external wound, and 3 may be caused by direct extension. The infection is a result of external wound in 3 pigs and is a result of hematogenous spread in 4 pigs. The incidence rate of spinal cord abscess in sows is higher than that in pigs.

  • This paper is concerned with the simulator to estimate deformation due to welding of panel blocks. An efficient computer program system has been developed which can be applied both to estimation of weld-induced deformation under the given welding conditions and to reflection of effect when methods for deformation control are applied. This paper briefly describes the background of the present simulator and sows some results applying the simulator to estimation of weld-induced deformation. In addition results when methods for deformation control are applied are also included.

  • Insulin responsiveness to glucose and tissue responsiveness to insulin, using the hyperglycemic clamp and the hyperinsulinemic euglycemic clamp techniques, were compared among cows, sheep and pigs. The plasma insulin concentrations during the hyperglaycemic clamp period were highest (p < 0.05) in cows, followed by sheep and pigs. The glucose infusion rate in the hyperinsulinemic euglycemic clamp technique was greater (p < 0.01) in pigs than in cows and sheep. These results suggest responsiveness to insulin is higher in pigs than in cows and sheep.

  • Objective: This study was conducted to characterize the behaviors and the body weight of suckling piglets in different social environments. Methods: Two groups of sows and suckling piglets housed either in individual farrowing crates in separate pens ($1.8{\times}2.4m$, the control group) or in groups of three sows with their piglets in farrowing crates in a large common enclosure ($5.4{\times}2.2m$, the treatment group) were observed with the aid of video technology for 9 consecutive hours on days 1, 2, and 3, after mixing. Results: Suckling, agonistic, and elimination behaviors of suckling piglets were significantly higher in the control group than in the treatment group. Inactive behavior was higher in the treatment group than in the control group. Most of the effects of the social environment on the suckling piglets seem to be the result of large reductions in behaviors and body weight for piglets switching from high activity to low activity. Moreover, suckling behavior and birth body weight were highly correlated with body weight at the end of the test. Conclusion: The social environment that resulted from mixing, thus, had significant effects on the behavior and body weight of suckling piglets, and behavioral characteristics, therefore, should be considered when making improvements to the husbandry and care methods used in swine production.

  • Early diagnoses of pregnancy for animal such as swine and bovine is extremely important to increase income of a farmhouse and for the management of farm. For the development of immunoasaay system of pregnancy in swine, we report a competitive heterologous enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for the direct measurement of oestrone sulfate (E1S) in diluted urine using anti-E1G (glucuronide) monoclonal antibody which cross react with ElS. The principle of assay was based on the typical solid-phase competitive ELISA methods using E1G-HRP (horseradish peroxidase) as a tracer and E1S for standard. The method had a reasonable sensitivity for the detection of E1S with 0.15 ng/ml as a detection limit. The intra-assay and inter-assay precisions were raging coefficient of from 8.50~9.67% and 8.50~9.87%, respectively, which were quite acceptable. In a field trial with a group 37 sows (18 non-pregnancy and 19 pregnancy sows) after day 29~30 post service, the concentration of E1S were determined to be below 30 ng/ml in all non-pregnancy group and over 48 ng/ml in pregnancy group except one sample. The method described here, heterologous ELISA for the measurement of E1S in urine is good enough for monitoring the early pregnancy test of swine.
