This paper describes a synthesized photoelastic method developed for the visualization and evaluation of sound pressure distribution of elastic wave in a solid. The visualization of wave stress field is achieved by synthesizing two photoelastic pictures, in which the direction of the principal axis of linear polariscopes differs by $45^{\circ}$. From the analysis of the wave stress distribution using this method, it is possible to evaluate the characteristics of elastic waves in a solid, such as the intensity of stress, directivity and resolution characteristics of the wave emitted from a commercial probe, and characteristics of scattering from various types of defects.

In this study, simulation of weak shock waves are peformed by a two-dimensional thermal fluid or compressible fluid model of the lattice Boltzmann method. The shock wave represents an abrupt change in fluids properties, in which finite variations in pressure, internal energies, and density occur over the shock thickness. The characteristics of the proposed model with a simple distribution function is verified by calculation of the sound speeds, and the shock tube problem. The reflection of a weak shock wave by wedge propagating in a channel is performed. The results agree well with those by finite difference method or by experiment. In the simulation of unsteady shock wave diffraction around a sharp corner, we show a flow field of vortical structure near the comer.
In this paper, the extended Biot's semilinear model was developed. Combining the extended Biot model with the dynamic equation yields the nonlinear wave equation in poproelastic sound absorbing materials. Both perturbation and matching techniques are used to find solutions for nonlinear wave equations. By comparing results between linear and nonlinear wave solutions, characteristics of nonlinear waves in poroelastic sound abosrbing materials have been studied. Nonlinear waves were found to be attenuated faster than the linear ones. A maximum amplitude of the nonlinear wave occurred near its surface boundaries and decay quickly with distance from the surface. It has also been found that, if the amplitudes of linear waves are known at the surface boundaries, those of nonlinear ones can be determined. This will be the basis of finding effects of nonlinearity on the absorption coefficient and the transmission loss.
Ultrasonic wave generation and propagation were modeled to simulate an ultrasonic test. A ray model was used for the modeling. Actual sound pressure distribution of the incident wave from an angle probe was analyzed using an ultrasonic visualization method to incorporate the actual sound pressure distribution in the model. In this method, the sound pressure was expressed by the density of rays and the reflection coefficient of ultrasonic beams. Reflection and mode conversion of rays were computed by the Snells law. Simulation programs for the problem of ultrasonic testing of a butt joint are built using this ray modeling. Simulation results for ultrasonic wave scattering from a defect and A-scan display in ultrasonic testing agreed with the actual experiment results.
The reflection coefficient of a material at oblique incidence is measured in a free field. The sound pressure distributions are measured at discrete points on two measurement lines and then decomposed into plane wave components by using spatial Fourier transform. The inciedent and reflected plane wave components are obtained from a set of "decomposition equations" of which uses the plane wave propagation theory. Numerical simulations and experiments have been performed to see the effect of finite size of measurement area. To reduce this effect, a window fuction has been performed to see the effects of finite size of mesurement area. To reduce this effect, a window function has been proposed and its effect on the measurement of sound absorbing material property has been studied as well. The reflection coefficient obtained by this method is compared with those obtained from other methods; 2-microphone method in a duct and an expirical equation of which determines the characteristic impedance .rho.c and propagation constant k of a material from flow resistance information.formation.

This experimental study describes the propagation characteristics of the impulse noise emitted from the exit of a straight pipe attached to the open end of a simple shock tube. The sound pressure level and directivity of the impulse noise propagating from the exit of pipe with several different diameters are measured in the far sound fold for the range of the incident shock wave Mach number between 1.07 and 1.26. The experimental results showed that the peak values of impulse noises had a strong dependance on the exit diameter of a pipe and the shock wave Mach number. The impulse noise had the directivity propagating toward to the pipe axis and the characteristics of inverse square law of propagation distance. Moreover, it was shown that the one-third octave band SPL of impulse noise was almost constant regardless of the frequency band.
When the extracorporeal shock wave lithotriptor is operated, sounds can be heard. Then that might be a question about the location where the sounds come from. For the purpose of investigating the fact, we identify the location of the sounds radiated using one hydrophone. In order to carry out the experiment, it is needed to obtain direct waves from objects. Therefore, we present an experimental method to reduce reflected waves for obtaining direct waves only. The experimental results show the amplitude of waves can be attenuated about 28dB due to a silicon rubber plate of 8.5mm attached at the bottom. This is a quantified result that can expect to obtain the direct waves using the proposed method. Then, we carried out the experiment for the sound source location. From the experimental results, we can undoubtedly present a fact that the sounds are radiated from the objects to be shot due to shock waves.

This study investigated the psychological and physiological responses to the sound of car horns produced by different. manufacturers. Ten female college students listened to the sound of the horns while their EEG responses on 6 sites were being measured, and rated each hem on psychological scales. Their EEG and psychological responses were investigated as to whether the responses were related to the loudness, sharpness, tonality, and roughness of the horns. The results indicated that the subjects felt more 'dominated' as the loudness and sharpness increased, that the subjects felt more 'pleasant' as the sharpness increased, that the subjects felt more 'dominant' as the tonality increased, and that the subjects felt more 'aroused' as the roughness increased. The physiological results showed that the fast alpha wave in the occipital lobe decreased in the relative power as the loudness, sharpness, and tonality increased, and that the delta wave in the occipital lobe increased and the slow alpha wave in the frontal lobe decreased in the relative power as the roughness increased.

In this paper, we propose diffraction-based sound control method to improve sound immersion in a virtual environment. The proposed technique can express the wave and flow of sound in a physical environment and a pattern similar to diffraction in real-time. Our approach determines whether there is an obstacle from the location of the sound source and then calculates the position of the new sound reflected and diffracted by the obstacle. Based on ray tracing, it determines whether or not it collides with an obstacle, and predicts the sound level of the agent behind the obstacle by using the vector reflected and refraction by the collision. In this process, the sound attenuation according to the distance/material is modeled by attenuating the size of the sound according to the number of reflected/refracted rays. As a result, the diffraction pattern expressed in the physics-based approach was expressed in real time, and it shows that the diffraction pattern also changes as the position of the obstacle is changed, thereby showing the result of naturally spreading the size of the sound. The proposed method restores the diffusion and diffraction characteristics of sound expressed in real life almost similarly.

In this paper, the architecture of a safe stove with an automatic fire suppression function using a sound wave fire extinguisher has been proposed and developed for the first time. A microcontroller connected to a fire sensor detects and suppresses a fire by driving a fire extinguisher. The sound wave fire extinguisher is composed of a speaker and collimator, and is driven by a driver module including an audio amplifier. The attenuation of the sound wave is reduced by preventing the sound diffusion with an enclosure surrounding a stove. The frequency of the sound wave is set to 50 Hz, and the sound pressure of 93 dBA is measured at the distance of 0.5 m. It takes maximum 8 and 15 seconds to suppress the flame from 7-cc and 14-cc flammable liquid, respectively, which corresponds to 24% and 42% of the natural extinguishing time. Since the proposed safe stove is non-toxic and leaves no residues over the conventional ones, it would combine with various home appliances to suppress early-stage fires and prevent fire expansion.
