In this paper, we describe a new algorithm for extracting nasal sound in continuous speech. We obtain pitches by using Area Comparison Method and extract nasal sound by comparing the area of G-peak and the area of side peak in one pitch interval. By using this method, the process can be speeded up. Therefore realtime processing is possible with a general microprocessor.

Acoustic holography allows us to predict spatial pressure distribution on any surface of interest from measured hologram. It is noteworthy that the data size is so huge that it takes long time to calculate pressure field. Moreover the reconstructed pressure field is frequently too complicated to get what we want to know. One possible candidate is complex envelope. Complex envelope in time domain is well known and widely used in various engineering field. We have attempted to extend this method to space domain, so that we can have rather simple spatial pressure picture that provides information we need, for example, where sound sources are. First we start with the simplest case. We examine the complex envelope of a plane wave on both space and wave number domain. Then we extend to monopole case. Holographic reconstructed sound field on the monopole is processed according to what we propose. We demonstrate how this method provides better picture for analyzing the sound field.
HRTF DB, including the information of the sounds which is arrived to our ears, is generally used to make a 3D sound. But it can decline some three-dimensional effects by the confusion between front and back directions due to the non-individual HRTF depending on each listener. In this paper, we propose a new method to use psychoacoustic theory that reduces the confusion of sound image localization. And we make use of an excitation energy by the sense of hearing. This method is brought HRTF spectrum characteristics into relief to draw out the energy ratio about the bark band. Informal listening tests show that the proposed method improves the front-back sound localization characteristics much better than the conventional methods.

The oscillometric method and Korotkoff sound method are the most common ways to measure the blood pressure. A new automatic blood pressure measurement device, which uses both oscillometric method and Korotkoff method, was developed. A pressure sensor was used to obtain cuff pressure and oscillation signal, and a microphone was used to detect Korotkoff sounds. Forty-five measurements from fifteen subjects were used for analysis. Correlation coefficients between the traditional auscultatory method and Korotkoff sound method were 0.9820 and 0.9721 for the systolic and diastolic blood pressure values, respectively. Standard deviations of differences for the systolic and diastolic blood pressure values were 1.3019 and 1.4495, respectively. Correspondingly, correlation coefficients between the traditional auscultatory method and oscillometric method using newly developed algorithm were 0.9651 and 0.9136 for the systolic and diastolic blood pressure values, with the standard deviations of 1.42 and 1.73, respectively. The results showed that the newly developed algorithm for oscillometirc method provide accurate blood pressure values, moreover, Korotkoff sound method using microphone provides even higher accuracy. Therefore, a new automatic device which utilizes both oscillometric method and Korotkoff sound method would provide the accurate and reliable blood pressure values.
Faults of rotating parts of a train normally generate unexpected frequency band or impulsive sound[1] which has a period when it moves with a constant speed. The former can be detected by the moving frame acoustic holography method, which visualizes sound field that is generated by a moving and emitting pure tone or band limited noise source. We have attempted to apply the method to the latter case: the periodic impulsive sound which generate different signal compared with what can be measured by the band limited noise. The signal to noise ratio which determines the success of early fault detection must also be studied with the impulsive and moving signal. This research shows how the problems related with these issues can be resolved. The main idea is that periodic impulsive signal can be expressed by infinite set of discrete pure tones. This enables us to obtain lots of holograms that visualize periodic impulsive sound field including noise by using the moving frame acoustic holography method. Therefore holograms can be averaged to improve the signal to noise ratio until having reliable information that exhibits where the impulsive sources are. Theory and experiment by using the miniature vehicle are described [Work supported by BK21 & KRRI].
Machine fault diagnosis recovers all the studies that aim to detect automatically faults or damages on machines. Generally, it is very difficult to diagnose a machine fault by conventional methods based on mathematical models because of the complexity of the real world systems and the obvious existence of nonlinear factors. This study develops an automatic machine fault diagnosis system that uses pattern recognition techniques such as principal component analysis (PCA) and artificial neural networks (ANN). The sounds emitted by the operating machine, a drill in this case, are obtained and analyzed for the different operating conditions. The specific machine conditions considered in this research are the undamaged drill and the defected drill with wear. Principal component analysis is first used to reduce the dimensionality of the original sound data. The first principal components are then used as the inputs of a neural network based classifier to separate normal and defected drill sound data. The results show that the proposed PCA-ANN method can be used for the sounds based automated diagnosis system.
This paper presents a simple, practical, and efficient method for estimating the speed of sound in reflection mode in ultrasound medical imaging. Its accurate determination is indispensable in order to obtain both good resolution and correct geometrical and volumetric information about human organs such as heart and kidney. Up to now, there have been several methods available, but they all suffer from either poor performance or high complexity. The proposed method finds out an optimum focusing delay profile in such a way that the brightness in a region of interest is maximized using continuous dynamic focusing in receive under fixed transmit focusing. Experiments carried out on a real ultrasound medical phantom reveals that the method a quite simple and effective in providing good speed of sound estimation, hence improved resolution and images, adding to dignostic utility.
Auditory stimuli are commonly used in various electroencephalogram experiments, also in EEG-based brain-computer interface systems. However, using conventional earphones that blocks the ear canal attenuates or even blocks external environmental sound which might cause loss of crucial information from surroundings. Instead, bone-conductive earphones are able to deliver sound through vibration without blocking the ear canal. To investigate the feasibility of the bone-conductive earphones for auditory-stimuli based experiments, we compared N100 event-related potential features as well the event-related spectral perturbation and inter-trial coherence of auditory steady-state response between conventional and bone-conductive earphones. The results showed no significant differences between bone conduction and conventional earphones regardless of distinct sound pressures. This result shows that bone conductive earphones can be used for auditory experiments when the environmental sound is crucial to the user.

This study aims to investigate the financial soundness of Korean households and its effects on the retirement preparation of these households. The sample consisted of 1,031 households selected from the 4th Korean Retirement and Income Study (KReIS) by the National Pension Research Institute in 2012. The empirical results are as follows. According to the logistic regression model, the statistically significant factors affecting the retirement preparation of Korean households are gender, occupation type, residence, satisfaction with economic condition, and type of financial soundness-sound households or insolvency-risky households. In other words, more female-headed households and households with higher levels of occupation are less likely to prepare for retirement. The households that are more likely to prepare for retirement are those that are lived in metropolitan areas as opposed to the countryside; further, households that are more economically sound are also more likely to prepare for retirement. In particular, sound households and insolvency-risky households are less likely to prepare for retirement compared to liquidity-risky households.
Recently, emotional contents that induce emotions and respond to emotions are given attention in the field of cultural industries, and extracting emotion caused by multimedia contents is being noted. Furthermore, since multimedia contents have been quickly produced and distributed these days, researches automatically to extract the feeling of multimedia contents are being accelerated. In this paper, we will study the method of emotional value extraction in the multimedia contents using the volume value of the multimedia contents in a certain frequency among sound informations. This study allows to extract the emotion of multimedia contents automatically, and the extracted information will be used to provide user's current emotion, weather, etc. for the users.
