MOTION VECTOR DETECTION ALGORITHM USING THE STEEPEST DESCENT METHOD EFFECTIVE FOR AVOIDING LOCAL SOLUTIONS

  • This paper presents a new algorithm that includes a mechanism to avoid local solutions in a motion vector detection method that uses the steepest descent method. Two different implementations of the algorithm are demonstrated using two major search methods for tree structures, depth first search and breadth first search. Furthermore, it is shown that by avoiding local solutions, both of these implementations are able to obtain smaller prediction errors compared to conventional motion vector detection methods using the steepest descent method, and are able to perform motion vector detection within an arbitrary upper limit on the number of computations. The effects that differences in the search order have on the effectiveness of avoiding local solutions are also presented.

  • Analytical solutions for the transient temperature and quasi-static thermal stresses which arise in thin plates subjected to an instantaneous point source of heat have been investigated. And the solutions have been extended to the case of a moving source of heat with the aid of the Duhamel's superposition integral. For finite disk an experiment was conducted, the measured temperature histories show a good agreement with the theoretical temperature histories, And the histories of thermal stresses show a good qualitative agreement with the physical phenomena. And also we can find out that the maximum temperature and thermal stresses and their location can be estimated by using the solutions for infinite plates instead of the solutions for a finite plate. The solutions can be used for the problems such as a welding or line heating in a hull construction.

  • This paper presents a new simplified method for finding the multiple load flow solutions and through their solutions the voltage stability can be evaluated. Line flow($P_{ij}$, $Q_{ij}$) may be formulated with the second-order equations for $V_{i}^{2}$ in polar coordinates or two circle equations for $e_{i}$ and $f_{i}$ in rectangular coordinates. Based on this feature, multiple load flow solutions are calculated with simple works, results of multiple load flow solutions are used for sensitivity analysis of voltage stability. Also, in the case that reactive power sources is considered, method of evaluating the voltage stability is introduced. The proposed method was validated to 2-bus and IEEE 6-bus system.

Vibration analysis of a beam on a nonlinear elastic foundation

  • Nonlinear vibrations of an Euler-Bernoulli beam resting on a nonlinear elastic foundation are discussed. In search of approximate analytical solutions, the classical multiple scales (MS) and the multiple scales Lindstedt Poincare (MSLP) methods are used. The case of primary resonance is investigated. Amplitude and phase modulation equations are obtained. Steady state solutions are considered. Frequency response curves obtained by both methods are contrasted with each other with respect to the effect of various physical parameters. For weakly nonlinear systems, MS and MSLP solutions are in good agreement. For strong hardening nonlinearities, MSLP solutions exhibit the usual jump phenomena whereas MS solutions are not reliable producing backward curves which are unphysical.

Series solutions for spatially coupled buckling anlaysis of thin-walled Timoshenko curved beam on elastic foundation

  • The spatially coupled buckling, in-plane, and lateral bucking analyses of thin-walled Timoshenko curved beam with non-symmetric, double-, and mono-symmetric cross-sections resting on elastic foundation are performed based on series solutions. The stiffness matrices are derived rigorously using the homogeneous form of the simultaneous ordinary differential equations. The present beam formulation includes the mechanical characteristics such as the non-symmetric cross-section, the thickness-curvature effect, the shear effects due to bending and restrained warping, the second-order terms of semitangential rotation, the Wagner effect, and the foundation effects. The equilibrium equations and force-deformation relationships are derived from the energy principle and expressions for displacement parameters are derived based on power series expansions of displacement components. Finally the element stiffness matrix is determined using force-deformation relationships. In order to verify the accuracy and validity of this study, the numerical solutions by the proposed method are presented and compared with the finite element solutions using the classical isoparametric curved beam elements and other researchers' analytical solutions.

  • The effects of insecticide dimilin including the technical grade(tg) and wettable power(wp-25), inhibiting the synthesis of chitin in the cuticle of insect larvae, and herbicides alachlor and atrazine on the development of shrimp caridina denticulata denticulata were investigated in various concentrations. This species is abundant in the freshwater such as river and pond. The shrimp larvae were reared at dimilin solutions(tg and wp 2), alachlor solutions, and atrazin solutions. the concentrations of dimiline were 0, 1, 5, 10 and 25 ppb dimilin solutions, and those of alachlor and atrazin were 0, 1, 5, 10 and 25ppm, respectively.mortality was high at 10 ppb when the larvae were exposed to dimilin and at 25ppm in the case of alachlor and atranzine solutions. If lethal concentration is defined as a concentration in which less than 10% of larvae to the post larval stage from hatching it can be concluded that the lethal concentration of dimilin is 5ppb, and that of alachlor and atrazin is 25 ppm.

  • Biclustering is a method to extract subsets of objects and features from a dataset which are characterized in some way. In contrast to traditional clustering algorithms which group objects similar in a whole feature set, biclustering methods find groups of objects which have similar values or patterns in some features. Both in clustering and biclustering, validating how much the result is informative or reliable is a very important task. Whereas validation methods of cluster solutions have been studied actively, there are only few measures to validate bicluster solutions. Furthermore, the existing validation methods of bicluster solutions have some critical problems to be used in general cases. In this paper, we review several well-known validation measures for cluster and bicluster solutions and discuss their limitations. Then, we propose several improved validation indices as modified versions of existing ones.

  • It is advisable to use irrigation solutions which have strong antibacterial effect and weak cytotoxic effect on treating root infections. Streptococci are ones of the most frequently isolated microorganisms in infected root canals. The antibacterial effect of ten irrigation solutions were investigated on S. mutans (19449), S. sanguis. )10556) and 4 streptococci isolated from saliva of healthy persons. These streptococci were exposured to irrigation solutions during 10 sec, 30 sec,. 1 min, 3 min, 5 min, 10 min, 30 min and 2hrs respectively. Four irrigation solutions which showed strong antibacterial activity were diluted to 1 : 1 to 1 : 10,000. Then they were subcultured on blood agar plate an observed after 1 day. 5.25% NaOC1 had the strongest antibacterial effect. 30% urea and normal saline showed no antibacterial effect. 50 % citric acid and 3% $H_2O_2$ showed relatively weak antibacterial effect. 15 % EDTA had very weak antibacterial effect.

Approximating Coupled Solutions of Coupled PBVPs of Non-linear First Order Ordinary Differential Equations

  • The present paper proposes a new monotone iteration method for existence as well as approximation of the coupled solutions for a coupled periodic boundary value problem of first order ordinary nonlinear differential equations. A new hybrid coupled fixed point theorem involving the Dhage iteration principle is proved in a partially ordered normed linear space and applied to the coupled periodic boundary value problems for proving the main existence and approximation results of this paper. An algorithm for the coupled solutions is developed and it is shown that the sequences of successive approximations defined in a certain way converge monotonically to the coupled solutions of the related differential equations under some suitable mixed hybrid conditions. A numerical example is also indicated to illustrate the abstract theory developed in the paper.

The Effect of Urea on Volumetric and Viscometric Properties of Aqueous Solutions of Poly(ethylene oxide)

  • The density and the viscosity of aqueous PEO solutions are observed with the several concentrations of PEO at 20 ℃. The effects of urea on them are also observed. The apparent and the partial specific volumes of PEO are calculated from the density data, which result that the polymer-polymer interaction is dominating in the binary aqueous PEO solutions, while the polymer-solvent interaction is dominating in the ternary aqueous urea-PEO solutions. It is explained by the urea induced breakage of the structured water originated from the hydrophobic interactions and the binding of the urea to the PEO chain. The concentration dependence of relative viscosity and the density dependence of fluidity is also discussed with the concept of the polymersolvent and the polymer-polymer interactions of aqueous urea-PEO solutions.
