A Melon Fruit Grading Machine Using a Miniature VIS/NIR Spectrometer: 1. Calibration Models for the Prediction of Soluble Solids Content and Firmness

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate the potential of interactance mode of NIR spectroscopy technology for the estimation of soluble solids content (SSC) and firmness of muskmelons. Methods: Melon samples were taken from local greenhouses in three different harvesting seasons (experiments 1, 2, and 3). The fruit attributes were measured at the 6 points on an equator of each sample where the spectral data were collected. The prediction models were developed using the original spectral data and the spectral data sets preprocessed by 20 methods. The performance of the models was compared. Results: In the prediction of SSC, the highest coefficient of determination ($R_{cv}{^2}$) values of the cross-validation was 0.755 (standard error of prediction, SEP=$0.89^{\circ}Brix$) with the preprocessing of normalization with range in experiment 1. The highest coefficient of determination in the robustness tests, $R_{rt}{^2}$=0.650 (SEP=$1.03^{\circ}Brix$), was found when the best model of experiment 3 was evaluated with the data set of experiment 2. The best $R_{cv}{^2}$ for the prediction of firmness was 0.715 (SEP=3.63 N) when no preprocessing was applied in experiment 1. The highest $R_{rt}{^2}$ was 0.404 (SEP=5.30 N) when the best model of experiment 3 was applied to the data set of experiment 1. Conclusions: From the test results, it can be concluded that the interactance mode of VIS/NIR spectroscopy technology has a great potential to measure SSC and firmness of thick-skinned muskmelons.

냉장저장 중 사과슬라이스의 개별페놀성분함량과 제변화 (Changes in the Content of Individual Phenolic Compounds in Apple Slices during Cold Storage)

  • The objectives of this study were to provide fundamental information on how individual phenolic compounds form on the inside of apple slices during cold storage, the changes in the content of four types of phenols, ingredient variation of individual phenolic compounds and the influence of phenolic compounds on enzymatic browning. This study measured the changes in the content of soluble solids, pH and vitamin C in order to investigate the correlations between these variables. HD and FA were the main phenolic compounds found in the apple slices, and HD was the most prevalent phenol. Furthermore, comparison of the CG and EP content revealed that there were more CGs than EPs. The phenol content tended to decrease considerably in the fresh apple slices and water-dipped apple slices but only slightly in the CP from sucrose-dipped apple slices and 0.5% ascorbic acid solution-dipped apple slices. The degree of browning increased in the following order: fresh apple slices, water-dipped apple slices, 0.5% ascorbic acid solution-dipped apple slices and CP from sucrose-dipped apple slices. The vitamin C content tended to decrease in the fresh apple slices, water-dipped apple slices, 0.5% ascorbic acid solution-dipped apple slices and CP from sucrose-dipped apple slices. The pH tended to increase in all sample groups, but the pH of the water-dipped apple slices was lower than that of the comparison group. The CP from sucrose-dipped apple slices had the lowest value of pH. The change in soluble solids tended to increase in all treatment groups, but this increase was less in the CP from sucrose-dipped apple slice. Correlation analysis revealed a high degree of correlation between browning and chlorogenic acid content. The results of the present study show that, when stored in the fridge, the change in phenol ingredient content in apple slices influences the browning of the slices. The results also showed that HD and FA were the main phenolic compounds, while CG was shown to have the greatest influence on browning.

Effects of Cooking on the n-Hexanal Content of Peanut Milk

  • The effects of cooking peanut kernels before grinding on the n-hexanal content of peanut milk was investigated. Analysis of headspace volatiles revealed that n-hexanal was greatly reduced by cooking peanut kernels before grinding. Total solids and protein content tended to decrease as cooking time was increased. The most satisfactory condition of cooking peanut kernels for preparing peanut milk was 10 min.

벼누룩으로 제조한 약주의 품질 특성 (Quality Characteristics of Yakju fermented with Paddy Rice (Byeo) Nuruk Yakju)

  • In this study, quality characteristics of yakju fermented with byeo-nuruk prepared using rice, wheat, and water were investigated. Five different mixture ratios were considered for byeo-nuruk preparation. A comparative analysis of commercial yakju and byeo-nuruk yakju was also performed. The results showed no significant differences in pH, total acidity, and total soluble solids of byeo-nuruk yakju immediately following fermentation. The byeo-nuruk yakju alcohol content increased with increasing wheat proportion. Lactic and succinic acid were the major organic acids of byeo-nuruk yakju, and the major volatile components were isoamyl alcohol and linalool. Yakju prepared using material D had the highest volatile component content and high preference evaluation scores for taste and overall acceptability. Compared to commercial yakju, byeo-nuruk yakju had less total acidity, soluble solids, and volatile acids, whereas its pH level and amino acid content were higher. No significant differences were observed between commercial yakju and byeo-nuruk yakju in terms of sensory evaluation.

Solid Waste from Swine Wastewater as a Fuel Source for Heat Production

  • This study was to evaluate the feasibility of recycling the solids separated from swine wastewater treatment process as a fuel source for heat production and to provide a data set on the gas emissions and combustion properties. Also, in this study, the heavy metals in ash content were analyzed for its possible use as a fertilizer. Proximate analysis of the solid recovered from the swine wastewater after flocculation with organic polymer showed high calorific (5,330.50 kcal/kg) and low moisture (15.38%) content, indicating that the solid separated from swine wastewater can be used as an alternative fuel source. CO and NOx emissions were found to increase with increasing temperature. Combustion efficiency of the solids was found to be stable (95 to 98%) with varied temperatures. Thermogravimetry (TG) and differential thermal analysis (DTA) showed five thermal effects (four exothermic and one endothermic), and these effects were distinguished in three stages, water evaporation, heterogeneous combustion of hydrocarbons and decomposition reaction. Based on the calorific value and combustion stability results, solid separated from swine manure can be used as an alternative source of fuel, however further research is still warranted regarding regulation of CO and NOx emissions. Furthermore, the heavy metal content in ash was below the legal limits required for its usage as fertilizer.

국내 고상가축분뇨 특성 및 이론적 메탄 잠재성에 대한 평가 (Evaluate of high solid manure characteristics and theoretical methane potential in domestic)

  • This study was conducted to establish a database of high solid manure(HSM) in domestic. Theoretical methane potential and HSM characteristics was evaluated using breef and dairy manure (n=156). Total solids and Volatile solids of HSM increased depending on time flow, the results showed $20.4{\pm}3.2$ and $17.4{\pm}2.8%$. respectively. C/N ratio of breef HSM was higher than dairy HSM C/N ratio. In theoretical methane potential, the result of breef and dairy HSM was showed $505.2{\pm}25.3$ and $493.5{\pm}20.2$, respectively. Nitrogen content of total HSM increased depending on time flow, the result of breef and dairy nitrogen content was showed $1.9{\pm}0.3$ and $2.8{\pm}0.2$, respectively. Carbon content of total HSM showed approximately 10% reduction. The optimal time of bed replacement was indicated between 29 amd 31 days based on the optimal C/N ratio. Therefore, this study was considered that it has high utilization for livestock manure recycling and basis of relevant research.

  • 서식 환경 조사 결과 수온은 1992년에는 웅촌이, 1993 년에는 송도가 높았으며, 염분은 1992년 1월에서 5월을 제외하고는 송도 양식장이 더 높았다. 부유물질과 chlorophyll a 함량 및 저질내 COD는 송도가 높았고, DO, DIP, DIN 및 저질내 총황화물은 웅촌이 높았다. 피조개의 성장과 생리 상태를 분석한 결과, 성장, 연체부지수, 체내 글리코겐 함량과 헤모글로빈 함량 모두 송도의 피조개가 높은 수치를 나타내었다. 또한 송도의 피조개가 생식소 발달도 빨랐다. 본 시험에서 피조개 성장과 생리상태에 영향을 미치는 가장 큰 환경 요인은 먹이생물의 양과 저질의 총황화물량으로 추정되었다.

Feasibility Studies on Anaerobic Sequencing Batch Retractor for Sludge Treatment

  • Digestion of a municipal wastewater sludge by the anaerobic sequencing batch reactor (ASBR) was investigated to evaluate the performance of the ASBR process at a critical condition of high-solids-content fined. The reactors were operated at an HRT of 10 days with an equivalent loading rate of 0.8-1.5 gVS/L/d at 35$^{\circ}C$ The main conclusions drawn from this study were as follows: 1. Digestion of a municipal wastewater sludge was possible using the ASBR in spite of high concentration of settleable solids in the sludge. The ASBRS with 3- and 4-day cycle period showed almost identical high digestion performances. 2. No adverse effect on digestion stability was observed In the ASBRS in spite of withdrawal and replenishment of 30% or 40% of liquid contents. A conventional anaerobic digester could be easily converted to the ASBR without any stability problem. 3. Flotation thickening occurred in thicken step of the ASBRS throughout steady state, and floating bed volume at the end of thicken period occupied about 70% of the working volume of the reactor Efficiency of flotation thickening in the ASBRS could be comparable to that of additional gravity thickening of a completely mixed digester. 4. Solids were accumulated rapidly in the ASBR during start-up period. Solids concentrations in the ASBRS were 2.6 times higher than that in the completely mixed control reactor at steady state. Dehydrogenase activity had a strong correlation with the solids concentration. Dehydrogenase activity of the digested flu형e in the ASBR was 2.9 times higher than that of the flu형e in the control reactor, and about 25 times higher than that of the subnatant in the ASBR. 5. Remarkable increase in equivalent gas production of 52% was observed at the ASBRS compared with the control reactor in spite of similar quality of clarified effluent from the ASBRS and control reactor. The increase in gas production from the ASBRS was believed to be combined results of accumulation of microorganisms, higher driving force applied, and additional long-term degradation of organics continuously accumulated.

재배지역 및 고도에 따른 블랙초크베리 'Nero'의 수체 생육 및 과실 특성 (Tree Growth and Fruit Characteristics of 'Nero' Black Chokeberry According to Different Cultivation Regions and Altitudes)

  • 재배지와 고도에 따른 블랙초크베리 'Nero'의 생육 시기, 수체 생육 및 과실 특성을 구명하여 육종 및 재배 생리 연구에 기초자료를 제공하고자 수행하였다. 2014년 재배지별 블랙초크베리 생육 시기 및 수체 생육은 네 재배 지역(단양, 옥천, 영동, 금산)의 기상 환경에 관계없이 유사했다. 재배지별 과실특성은 십립중과 안토시아닌 함량에서 유의적인 차이가 나타났는데 이는 각각 전정방법과 관수 등의 재배 기술과 수확 전 일교차 급증의 영향으로 추측되었다. 2014년과 2015년 고도별 블랙 초크베리 'Nero'의 생육 시기 및 수체 생육은 유사하게 나타났지만, 과실 특성은 기온이 높은 저지대(117 m)에서 생산된 과실의 가용성고형물이 고지대(342 m)보다 높았던 반면, 산도는 고지대가 높았다. 안토시아닌 함량은 2014년과 2015년 8월 중순까지 증가하다가 고도별로 차이는 있으나 이후부터 감소하는 경향을 보였다. 재배지와 고도별 블랙초크베리 'Nero'의 수체 생육 및 생육 시기는 차이가 없어 국내 환경에서 재배가 용이한 것으로 생각되며, 수확 시기별 과실 특성을 고려할 때 단양 지역의 블랙초크베리의 최적 수확 시기는 8월 8-19일로 판단되었다.

시설재배 '부지화' M16 A계통의 '탱자'와 '스윙글 시트루멜로' 대목과 과실 및 잎의 수분상태가 과실품질 차이에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Water States of Fruit Vesicle and Leaf on Fruit Quality in 'Trifoliate' Orange and 'Swingle citrumelo' Rootstock of 'Shiranuhi' [(Citrus unshiu ${\times}$ C. sinensis) ${\times}$ C. reticulata] Mandarin Hybrid, M16 A Line in Plastic Film House Cultivation)

  • 본 연구에서는 M16 A계통 '부지화'를 강세대목인 대목 '스윙글 시트루멜로' 또는 보통대목인 '탱자'에 접목하여 무가온 하우스에서 재배한 잎과 과실 사양의 수분상태 변화 및 과실 성숙기의 과실 가용성 고형물과 산 함량변화를 조사했다. 강세대목인 '스윙글 시트 루멜로'와 보통대목인 '탱자'에 접목한 M16 A계통 '부지화'의 대목에 따라 과실의 품질은 영향을 받는 것으로 나타났는데, '스윙글 시트루멜로' 대목은 '탱자' 대목보다 과실 가용성 고형물과 산함량이 낮았다. 동트기 직전에 측정된 과실사양의 수분포텐셜 및 팽압은 '스윙글 시트루멜로' 대목이 '탱자' 대목보다 조금 높은 경향을 보였으나, 삼투 포텐셜의 값은 '탱자' 대목이 '스윙글 시트루멜로' 대목보다 낮았다. 과실사양과 같은 시간대에 측정된 엽수분포텐셜 값의 변화도 과실 사양의 삼투포텐셜 변화와 유사한 경향을 보여주었다. 이상의 결과로 보아, M16 A계통 '부지화'에 있어 두개의 대목에 따라 잎의 수분 상태와 과실사양의 삼투포텐셜 차이가 있었으며, 이러한 차이로 인하여 과실 가용성 고형물과 산 함량에 차이가 나타나는 것으로 판단되며, 대목에 따른 수분 상태와 과실 품질의 차이는 대목의 뿌리분포가 영향을 미쳤기 때문인 것으로 사료된다.
