  • Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI) is a Worldwide LHC Computing Grid (WLCG) Tier-1 center mandated to preserve raw data produced from A Large Ion Collider Experiment (ALICE) experiment using the world's largest particle accelerator, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). Physical medium used widely for long-term data preservation is tape, thanks to its reliability and least price per capacity compared to other media such as optical disk, hard disk, and solid-state disk. However, decreasing numbers of manufacturers for both tape drives and cartridges, and patent disputes among them escalated risk of market. As alternative to tape-based data preservation strategy, we proposed disk-only erasure-coded archival storage system, Custodial Disk Storage (CDS), powered by Exascale Open Storage (EOS), an open-source storage management software developed by CERN. CDS system consists of 18 high density Just-Bunch-Of-Disks (JBOD) enclosures attached to 9 servers through 12 Gbps Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) Host Bus Adapter (HBA) interfaces via multiple paths for redundancy and multiplexing. For data protection, we introduced Reed-Solomon (RS) (16, 4) Erasure Coding (EC) layout, where the number of data and parity blocks are 12 and 4 respectively, which gives the annual data loss probability equivalent to 5×10-14. In this paper, we discuss CDS system design based on JBOD products, performance limitations, and data protection strategy accommodating EOS EC implementation. We present CDS operations for ALICE experiment and long-term power consumption measurement.

  • Speckle Interferometer equipped with an ITT intensified CCD have been used on the NCUO ( National Central University Observatory, Taiwan) 24-inch telescope for studying the orbits of bright binary systems selected from the Yale's Bright Star Catalogue. The high resolution and high sensitivity ITT intensified solid state video camera ( F4577 ) has external gain and gate control functions which will simplify the design of the speckle camera and allow us to do precise speckle photometry. The goal of this project is trying to study the bright binary systems with separations between the average size of seeing disk and the diffraction limit of the 24-inch telescope. Recently some observing data have been reduced and compared with the other teams' results. We are now improving the data reduction technology and trying to use real time observing mode on the monthly routine observation.

  • During several decades, hard disk drive(HDD) has been used in most computer systems as secondary storage and, however, the performance enhancement of HDD is limited by its mechanical properties. On the other hand, although the flash memory based solid state drive (SSD) has more advantages over HDD such as high performance and low noise, SSD is still too expensive for common usage and expected to take several years to replace HDD completely. Therefore, SSD caching mechanism using the SSD as a cache of high capacity HDD has been highlighted lately. The representatives of SSD caching mechanisms are typically bcache, dm-cache, Flashcache, and EnhanceIO. Each of them has its own internal mechanism and implementation, and this makes them to show their own pros. and cons. In this paper, we analyze the characteristics of each SSD caching mechanisms and compare the performance of them under various workloads. We expect that our contribution will be useful to enhance the performance of SSD caching mechanisms.

  • To adjust the difference of bandwidth between host interface and NAND flash memory, DRAM is adopted as the buffer management in SSD (Solid-state Disk). In this paper, we propose cost-effective techniques to enhance SSD performance instead of using expensive high bandwidth DRAM. The SSD data can be classified into three groups such as user data, meta data for handling user data, and FEC(Forward Error Correction) parity/ CRC(Cyclic Redundancy Check) for error control. In order to improve the performance by considering the features of each data, we devise a flexible burst control method through monitoring system and a page based FEC parity/CRC application. Experimental results show that proposed methods enhance the SSD performance up to 25.9% with a negligible 0.07% increase in chip size.

  • In response to the demands of large-scale data processing with low-power and new application, a storage system using SSD (Solid State Disk/Drive) with fast input-output performance instead of hard disc has appeared as storage device. Studies on methods to overcome specific problems of SSD such as various processing data units, out-place-update and limited delete count have been actively conducted. However, declining performance and stability have not been resolved yet when storing case specific data with small scale that causes frequent random write in hard disc or SSD. This thesis suggests a system structure that stores index requesting frequent random write in NVRAM capable of byte access by using characteristics such as byte unit fast read / write of NVRAM, non-volatile and smaller size of actual changed data size in index page than block size.

  • Flash memory based SSDs are currently being considered as a promising candidate for replacing hard disks due to several superior features such as shorter access time, lower power consumption and better shock resistance. However, SSDs have different characteristics from hard disk such as difference of unit and time for read, write and erase operation and impossibility for over-writing. Because of these reasons, SSDs have disadvantages on hard disk based systems, so FTL(Flash Translation Layer) is designed to increase SSDs' efficiency. In this paper, we propose an advanced logical address mapping method for increasing SSDs' performance, which is named HAMM(Hybrid Address Mapping Method). HAMM addresses drawbacks of previous block-mapping method and super-block-mapping method and takes advantages of them. We experimented our method on our own SSDs simulator. In the experiments, we confirmed that HAMM uses storage area more efficiently than super-block-mapping method, given the same buffer size. In addition, HAMM used smaller memory than block-mapping method to construct mapping table, demonstrating almost same performance.

  • Solid state drive (SSD) cache technologies that are used as a second-tier cache between the main memory and hard disk drive (HDD) have been widely studied. The SSD cache requires a new prefetching scheme as well as cache replacement algorithms. This paper presents a prefetching scheme for a storage-class cache using SSD. This prefetching scheme is designed for the storage-class cache and based on a long-term scheduling in contrast to the short-term prefetching in the main memory. Traditional prefetching algorithms just consider only read, but the presented prefetching scheme considers both read and write. An experimental evaluation shows 2.3% to 17.8% of hit rate with a 64GB of SSD and the 4GiB of prefetching size using an I/O trace of 14 days. The proposed prefetching scheme showed significant improvement of cache hit rate and can be easily implemented in storage-class cache systems.

  • SSD (solid state disk), which is flash memory-based storage device, has the advantages of high density and fast data processing. Therefore, it is being utilized as a storage device for high-capacity data storage systems that manage rapidly increasing big data. However, flash memory, a storage media, has a physical limitation that when the write/erase operation is repeated more than a certain number of times, the cells are worn out and can no longer be used. In this paper, we propose a method for converting defective multi-bit cells into single-bit cells to reduce the defect rate of flash memory and extend its lifetime. The proposed idea distinguishes the defects and treatment methods of multi-bit cells and single-bit cells, which have different physical characteristics but are treated as the same defect, and converts the expected defective multi-bit cells into single-bit cells to improve the defect rate and extend the overall lifetime. Finally, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed idea by measuring the increased lifetime of SSD through simulations.
