The tribological properties of the aluminum short fiber and glass fiber reinforced tin-bronze matrix composites manufactured by vacuum hot pressing was studied. The effect of the composition and the relative density on the wear properties was examined by a reciprocal type tribo-test machine. The results were discussed by the observation of the microstructure of sintered specimen and worn surface observation using SEM and EDS. Addition of the fibers led to the wear resistance since the metal matrix was reinforced by the fibers. The reinforcement of the fiber seemed to be stronger as the distribution of the fibers was more uniform. Graphite also reduce the wear loss. The pores in the sintered composites seemed to play an important role to improve the wear resistance since the pores provide the places where the solid lubricants locate.
The processing conditions fur the synthesis of platelet W $S_2$ lubricant powder through a solid-gas reaction were optimized. The mixture of tungsten and sulfur powders were sealed in a vacuum of 10$^{-6}$ torr, prior to heat-treating at 85$0^{\circ}C$ fur 8 days. The reaction product showed a well-developed platelet W $S_2$ powder with an average size of 3.8 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. The TGA/DTA analysis of the synthesized W $S_2$ powder was performed up to 120$0^{\circ}C$ at a rate of 1$0^{\circ}C$/min in flowing air (100 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$/min) atmosphere. The weight loss was about 6% up to 120$0^{\circ}C$ compared to the original weight. A rapid weight loss of about 5% occurred in the temperature range of 44$0^{\circ}C$ to 66$0^{\circ}C$ and an exothermic peak observed due to the transition of W $S_2$ to W $O_3$. The synthesized W $S_2$powder was coated on the commercial deep grooved ball bearing (No. 6203) to examine the effect of W $S_2$, coating layer on the noise and endurance of the ball bearing. The level of noise obtained from W $S_2$, coated-ball bearing (56 ㏈) was higher. than the value (32 ㏈) occurred in the case of greece lubrication. The endurance of the ball-bearing assembled after the coating of W $S_2$ powder onto each part increased 50 times compared to the non-coated ball-bearing..
The effects of interface boundary strength on wear and wear transition during sliding have been investigated in silicon carbide ceramics. Three different microstructures, i.e., solid state sintered silicon carbide, liquid phase sintered silicon carbide and liquid phase sintered silicon carbide composite reinforced with TiB$_{2}$ particulates, were designed by hot pressing. Examinations of crack patterns and fracture modes indicated that interface boundaries were relatively strong between silicon carbide grains in the solid state sintered silicon carbide, intermediate in the liquid phase sintered silicon carbide and weak between silicon carbide grains and TiB$_{2}$ particles in the composite. Wear data and examinations of worn surfaces revealed that the wear behavior of these silicon carbide ceramics could be significantly affected by the interface strength. In the solid state sintered silicon carbide, the wear occurred by a grooving process. In the liquid phase sintered silicon carbide and composite, on the other hand, an abrupt transition in wear mechanism from initial grooving to grain pull-out process occurred during the test. The transition occurred significantly earlier in the composite than in the carbide.
In various fields, several studies based on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been conducted. The results of previous studies, wherein CNT coatings have been incorporated as solid lubricants, demonstrate that the friction and wear characteristics of CNT coatings can be improved through the absorption/dispersion of the contact pressure by controlling the stiffness of the nanomesh structure comprising CNT strands. In this study, the friction and wear characteristics of the following are compared: CNT coating formed by spin coating of CNT solution, compressed CNT coating, and compressed/heated CNT coating (wherein CNT strands are squeezed through compression and/or heating). It is observed that the friction coefficient of the CNT coating having the largest number of voids between the CNT strands is significantly lower than those of the compressed CNT coating and the compressed/heated CNT coating. The wear tracks of the compressed CNT coating and the compressed/heated CNT coating indicate that some parts become torn or adhere into a lump. However, in the case of the CNT coating, a smooth wear surface is formed by rubbing. Furthermore, as the void space between the squeezed and adhered CNT strands decreases, the resistance to structural deformation increases, thereby resulting in an increased frictional force and a wear pattern that becomes torn or forms a lump. Hence, the results obtained from this study corroborate that the friction and wear characteristics of CNT coatings can be enhanced through the absorption/dispersion of the contact pressure by controlling the stiffness of the nanomesh structure of CNT coatings.
Nano/micro friction with the contact area was studied on Si-wafer (100) and diamond-like carbon (DLC) film. Borosilicate balls of radii $0.32{\mu}m,\;0.5{\mu}m,\;1.25{\mu}m\;and\;2.5{\mu}m$ mounted on the top of AFM tip (NPS) were used for nano-scale contact and Soda Lime glass balls of radii 0.25mm, 0.5mm, 1mm were used for micro-scale contact. At nano-scale, the friction between ball and surface was measured with the applied normal load using an atomic force microscope (AFM), and at micro scale it was measured using ball-on flat type micro-tribotester. All the experiments were conducted at controlled conditions of temperature $(24\pm1^{\circ}C)$ and humidity $(45\pm5\%)$. Friction was measured as a function of applied normal load in the range of 0-160nN at nano scale and in the range of $1000{\mu}N,\; 1500{\mu}N,\;3000{\mu}N\;and\;4800{\mu}N$ at micro scale. Results showed that the friction at nano scale increased with the applied normal load and ball size for both kinds of samples. Similar behavior of friction with the applied normal load and ball size was observed for Si-wafer at micro scale. However, for DLC friction decreased with the ball size. This difference of in behavior of friction in DLC nano- and microscale was attribute to the difference in the operating mechanisms. The evidence of the operating mechanisms at micro-scale were observed using scanning electron microscope (SEM). At micro-scale, solid-solid adhesion was dominant in Silicon-wafer, while plowing in DLC. Contrary to the nano scale that shows almost a wear-less situation, wear was prominent at micro-scale. At nano- and micro-scale, effect of contact area on the friction was discussed with the different applied normal load and ball size.
The piston of a marine diesel engine works under severe conditions, including a combustion pressure of over 180 bar, high thermal load, and high speed. Therefore, the analyses of the fatigue strength, thermal load, clamping (bolting) system and lubrication performance are important in achieving a robust piston design. Designing the surface profile and the skirt ovality carefully is important to prevent severe wear and reduce frictional loss for engine efficiency. This study performs flexible multi-body dynamic and elasto-hydrodynamic (EHD) analyses using AVL/EXCITE/PU are performed to evaluate tribological characteristics. The numerical techniques employed to perform the EHD analysis are as follows: (1) averaged Reynolds equation considering the surface roughness; (2) Greenwood_Tripp model considering the solid_to_solid contact using the statistical values of the summit roughness; and (3) flow factor considering the surface topology. This study also compares two cases of skirt shapes with minimum oil film thickness, peak oil film pressure, asperity contact pressure, wear rate using the Archard model and friction power loss (i.e., frictional loss mean effective pressure (FMEP)). Accordingly, the study compares the calculated wear pattern with the field test result of the piston operating for 12,000h to verify the quantitative integrity of the numerical analysis. The results show that the selected profile and the piston skirt ovality reduce friction power loss and peak oil film pressure by 7% and 57%, respectively. They also increase the minimum oil film thickness by 34%.
Two-dimensional materials such as graphene, h-BN, and $MoS_2$ have attracted increased interest as solid lubricant and protective coating layer for nanoscale devices owing to their superior mechanical properties and low friction characteristics. In this work, the frictional properties of single-layer graphene, h-BN, and $MoS_2$ are experimentally investigated under various normal forces using atomic force microscope (AFM) tips with a spherical and flat end, with the aim to gain a better understanding of frictional behaviors. The nonlinear relationship between friction and normal force friction was clearly observed for single-layer graphene, h-BN, $MoS_2$ specimens slid against the spherical and flat AFM tips. The results also indicate that single-layer graphene, h-BN, $MoS_2$ exhibit low frictional properties (e.g., friction coefficient below 0.1 under 70~100 nN normal force). In particular, graphene is found to be superior to h-BN and $MoS_2$ in terms of frictional properties. However, the friction of single-layer graphene, h-BN, $MoS_2$ against the flat tip is larger than that against the spherical tip, which may be attributed to the relatively large adhesion. Furthermore, it is shown that the fluctuation of friction is more significant for the flat tip than the spherical tip. The resutls of this study may be helpful to elucidate the feasibility of using two-dimensional materials as solid lubricant and protective coating layer for nanoscale devices.
The sliding contact interface of machine components such as bearings, gears frequently operates in lubrication at the inception of sliding failure under high loads, speed and slip. The surface temperature at the interface of bodies in a sliding contact is one of the most important factors influencing the behavior of machine components. Most surface failure in sliding contact region result from frictional heat generation. However, it is difficult to measure temperature rise experimentally. So the calculation of the surface temperature at a sliding contact interface has long been an interesting and important subject for tribologist. The surface temperature rise is related in contact pressure, sliding speed, material properties and lubrication thickness. Though roughness, load, ect all of the condition, are same, film thickness varies with velocity. In this study, surface temperature rise due to frictional heating in lubrication is calculated with various velocities. Surface film shearing and dry solid asperity contact are used to simulate the change of frictional heat in lubricated contact
In this study, friction characteristics using elastomeric actuator with Magneto-rheological (MR) materials are identified. Typically, Magneto-rheological materials are divided into two groups by MR fluid in fluid state and MR elastomer in solid state like rubber. The stiffness characteristics of Magneto-rheological material can be changed as magnetic field is applied. MR fluid has been applied to various industry fields such as to brake, clutch, damper, engine mount and etc. However, MR fluid has been used under the sealed condition to prevent leaking issues. In order to overcome these problems, MR elastomer that has same property as MR fluid has been developed and studied. MR elastomer mainly consists of polymer material such as natural rubber or silicon rubber with particles that can be polarized with magnetic field. And it is called as a smart material since its stiffness and damping characteristics can be changed. In this study, MR elastomer is produced and pin-on-disc tests are carried out to identify the friction characteristics of the material. Several test conditions are applied to evaluate the feasibility to use as a smart actuator in the field of vibration control.
