This paper describes a design concept of NPC1 power stack for 1500VDC megawatt level solar inverter. This stack uses three latest half-bridge IGBT modules with highest power density and operation junction temperature, which enable realization of power level beyond 1MW without paralleling. Critical design concept on loop inductance is explained. Dynamic characteristics are verified by double-pulse test. Thermal characteristics and output power limits are verified by thermal test. Temperature-sensitive component on PCB as output power constraint is identified. Different PCB repositioning solutions are tested to give the overall output power thermal derating curves, which enable output power of 1.15MW at $T_A=55^{\circ}C$ with $15^{\circ}C$ thermal margin. The power stack characteristic and performance change under different thermal environment is further analyzed.
Stirling engine for solar thermal power is an essential part of Dish-Stirling system which generates electricity by using direct normal irradiation and will go into commercialization in near future. For the Stirling engine used in this study is Solo 161 model the capacity of which is 10 kWe and was already used for the Dish-Stirling system of KIER in Jinhae. The receiver of Stirling engine absorbes concentrated solar radiation and transfer it to working fluid of Hydrogen. The working condition of striling engine is high temperature and high pressure to make high efficiency. Therefore the receiver should stand against high temperature of above 800 $^{\circ}C$ and high pressure of max. 150 bar with good performance of heat transfer. The receiver is composed of 78 Inconel tubes of 1/8" with thickness of 0.71 mm and two reserviors which is connected with two cylinders. In order to know the charaterristics of heat transfer of Stirling engine receiver, simulation on the heat transfer of the receiver of Solo 161 is conducted by using CFD code of Fluent. The heat flux on the receiver surface has a shape of Gaussian distribution so, it is necessary to simulate a whole receiver. However, It is difficult and time consuming to simulate the whole receiver that one tube with different heat flux conditions are considered in this study. From the simulation results, heat transfer charateristics of receiver are observed and tube wall and fluid temperature and heat transfer coefficient are obtained and compared with the calculated results from Dittus-Boelter's correlation.
Daegu Solar Power Tower Plant of a 200 kW thermal capacity uses an open air receiver. An air receiver is generally based on the volumetric receiver concept with porous ceramic absorbers. Because absorber material is important in the volumetric receiver, ceramic materials with excellent thermal conductivity, high solar absorptivity and good thermal stability have been researched. KIER also developed SiC honeycomb absorber modules and evaluated performance of the modules at the KIER solar furnace. For performance evaluation, we made an open volumetric receiver containing the modules and measured the outlet temperature and the efficiency. It is demonstrated that performance of the KIER absorber is comparable to that of a reference absorber developed by DLR.
SolarPACES(Solar Power and Chemical Energy systems) is an international organization under the REWP(Renewable Energy Working Party)in the IEA(International Energy Agency) and focuses on the technology development and market expansion of CSP(Concentrating Solar Power). Seventeen countries including Rep. of Korea participate in the ExCo(Executive Committee) of SolarPACES. The ExCo meeting helds two times in a year and the second ExCo meeting opens in company with the five Task meetings. Rep. of Korea takes part in the Task-1officially. The 81th ExCo and Task meetings were held during September 18 and 19 in Spain with SolarPACES conference which also continued in succession to September 23 in this year. This paper introduces the activities which have been under progressed in the Task-1 and Task-3based on this time attendance of the meeting. In accordance with the expansion of CSP market and technology development, the needs for the standardization and project status underway in the world are increasing. Therefore, build an international project database and standard of the CSP technology are the main activities in the Task-1 and the standardization is also connected with the Task-3. In addition, to increase the reliability of the new technology of CSP and to reduce the concern of investors, the Task-1 is making guidelines for CSP performance prediction which can provide medium quality calculated performance data of PTC(Parabolic Trough Concentrator) type technology widely used and occupies over 90% CSP market.
Paradigm depending only on fossil fuel for building heat source is rapidly changing. Accelerating the change, as it has been known, is obligation for reducing green house gas coming from use of fossil fuel, i.e. reaction to United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. In addition, factors such as high oil price, unstable supply, weapon of petroleum and oil peak, by replacing fossil fuel, contributes to advance of environmental friendly renewable energy which can be continuously reusable. Therefore, current new energy policies, beyond enhancing effectiveness of heat using equipments, are to make best efforts for national competitiveness. Our country supports 11 areas for new renewable energy including sun light, solar heat and wind power. Among those areas, ocean thermal energy specifies tidal power generation using tide of sea, wave and temperature differences, wave power generation and thermal power generation. But heat use of heat source from sea water itself has been excluded as non-utilized energy. In the future, sea water heat source which has not been used so far will be required to be specified as new renewable energy. This research is to survey local heating system in Europe using sea water, central solar heating plants, seasonal thermal energy store and to analyze large scale central solar heating plants in German. Seasonal thermal energy store necessarily need to be equipped with large scale thermal energy store. Currently operating central solar heating system is a effective method which significantly enhances sharing rate of solar heat in a way that stores excessive heat generating in summer and then replenish insufficient heat for winter. Construction cost for this system is primarily dependent on large scale seasonal heat store and this high priced heat store merely plays its role once per year. Since our country is faced with 3 directional sea, active research and development for using sea water heat as cooling and heating heat source is required for seashore villages and building units. This research suggests how to utilize new energy in a way that stores cooling heat of sea water into seasonal thermal energy store when temperature of sea water is its lowest temperature in February based on West Sea and then uses it as cooling heat source when cooling is necessary. Since this method utilizes seasonal thermal energy store from existing central solar heating plant for heating and cooling purpose respectively twice per year maximizing energy efficiency by achieving 2 seasonal thermal energy store, active research and development is necessarily required for the future.
Sun tracking system is the most important subsystem in parabolic dish type solar thermal power plant, since it determines the amount of thermal energy to be collected, thus affects the efficiency of solar thermal power plant most significantly. Various types of sun tracking systems are currently used. Among them, use of photo sensors to located the sun(which is called sensor type) and use of astronomical algorithm to compute the sun position(which is called program type) are two of the mostly used methods. Recently some uses CCD sensor, like CCD camera, which is called image processing type sun tracking system. This work is concerned with the analysis of sun tracking performance of various types of sun tracking systems currently used in the parabolic dish type solar thermal power plant. We first developed a sun tracking error measurement system. Then, we evaluate the performance of five different types of sun tracking systems, sensor type, program type, hybrid type(use of sensor and computed sun position simultaneously), tracking error compensated program type and image processing type. Experimentally obtained data shows that the tracking error compensated program type sun tracking system is very effective and could provide a good sun tracking performance. Also the data obtained shows that the performance of sensor type sun tracking system is being affected by the cloud significantly, while the performance of a program type sun tracking system is being affected by the sun tracking system's mechanical and installation errors very much. Finally image processing type sun tracking system can provide accurate sun tracking performance, but costs more and requires more computational time.
A Dish type solar concentrating system consists of a parabolic concentrator and a cavity receiver. In order to achieve high temperatures from solar energy, it is essential to efficiently reflect the solar rays in the concentrator and to minimize thermal losses in the cavity receiver. Improving the economical efficiency of a solar power system required the stirling unit to be operated continuously. For continuous operation of the stilting unit, the receiver must be continuously provided with thermal energy from solar as well as additional combustion heat. It is possible for a hybrid solar receiver system equipped with an additional combustion to be operated 24 hrs/day. A hybrid solar receiver was designed and manufactured for a total thermal load of 35 kW in the operating temperature range $700^{\circ}C$ to $800^{\circ}C$. The hybrid receiver system was tested in gas-only mode by gas-fired heat to investigate thermal characteristics at inclination angle varying from 0 deg to 30 deg(cavity facing down) and the aperture to cavity diameter ratios of 0(closed cavity) and 1.0(open cavity). This paper has been conducted to measure temperature distribution in cavity surface and to analyze thermal resistances, and the evaporation and condensation heat transfer coefficient in all cases(open and closed cavity).

This study aimed to develop an advanced anomaly-detection system tailored for solar power distribution panels using thermal imaging cameras to ensure operational stability. It addresses the imperative shift toward digitalized safety management in electrical facilities, transcending the limitations of conventional empirical methodologies. Our proposed system leverages a faster R-CNN-based artificial intelligence model optimized through meticulous hyperparameter tuning to efficiently detect anomalies in distribution panels. Through comprehensive experimentation, we validated the efficacy of the system in accurately identifying anomalies, thereby propelling safety protocols forward during the fourth industrial revolution. This study signifies a significant stride toward fortifying the integrity and resilience of solar power distribution systems, which is pivotal for adapting to emerging technological paradigms and evolving safety standards in the energy sector. These findings offer valuable insights for enhancing the reliability and efficiency of safety management practices and fostering a safer and more sustainable energy landscape.
Heliostat field is the most important subsystem in the tower type solar thermal power plant since its optical performance affects the total system efficiency most significantly while the construction cost of it is the major part of total construction cost in such a power plant. Thus a well designed heliostat field to maximize the optical efficiency as well as to minimize the land usage is very important. This work presents methodology, procedures and result of heliostat filed design for 200kW solar thermal power plant built recently in Daegu, Korea. A $2{\times}2(m)$ rectangular shaped receiver located at 43(m) high and tilted $28^{\circ}$ toward heliostat field, 450 of heliostats of which the reflective surface is formed by 4 of $1{\times}1(m)$ flat plate mirror facet, and the land area having about $140{\times}120(m)$ size are used to form the heliostat field. A procedure to deploy 450 heliostats in radial staggered nonblocking formation is developed. Also the procedures to compute the cosine effect, intercept ratio, blocking and shading ratio in the field are developed. Finally the heliostat filed is designed by finding the optimal radial distance and azimuthal spacing in radial staggered nonblocking formation such that the designed heliostat field optical efficiency could be maximized. The designed heliostat field has 77% of annual average optical efficiency, which is obtained by annually averaging the optical efficiencies computed between the time of where sun elevation angle becomes $10^{\circ}$ after sunrise and the time of where sun elevation angle becomes $10^{\circ}$ before sunset in each day.
The aim of this paper is to investigate the application of solar energy in reducing cabin thermal load. When a vehicle is parked under the sun in summer, the interior temperature can reach up to $70^{\circ}C$ depending on the solar intensity. Solar power, one of the green energies, is used in automobile air conditioning systems, in order to operate the blower. The power supply of a blower's voltage has been used in a solar sunroof experiment. At the climate wind tunnel, cabin temperature changes were conducted with various operating modes of an air handling system and the preventilation parking conditions of several vehicles, outdoors, was also examined. The test results of the solar sunroof, 39.3W power and 14.1% efficiency were obtained. The thermal load behavior was analysed with the air handling system operating mode differently according to the cabin temperature. By simply operating the blower, average cabin temperature decreased between $5^{\circ}C{\sim}10^{\circ}C$ in those vehicles parked outdoors in summer. This reveals that cabin thermal comfort can be improved without consuming the vehicle's extra energy, and that the performance of the air-conditioning system is better than those currently found in vehicles. Moreover, fuel economy will be increased as a result of the reduction in the use of the air-conditioning system, and many other human advantages will be gained. Such advantages include minimized VOCs and a healthy cabin environment.
