  • The use of ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) to generate electricity is one of the methods proposed to utilize renewable energy and to protect the environment. In this study, simulations were performed to investigate the effect of weather conditions in the Ulsan region, Korea, on the efficiency of a solar-heating OTEC (SH-OTEC) system. This system utilizes solar thermal energy as the secondary heat source. Various working fluids were also simulated to select one that is suitable for this system. The results showed that R152A, R600, and R600A, in that order, were the most suitable working fluids. The effective area of the solar collector for a $20^{\circ}C$ increase in the collector outlet temperature fluctuated from 50 to $97m^2$ owing to the change in the monthly average solar gain. The annual average efficiency of the SH-OTEC increases to 6.23%, compared to that of a typical conventional OTEC, which is 2-4%.

  • Heliostat field control algorithm is the logics to operate the heliostat field of tower type solar thermal power plant and it could include various methodologies of how to control the heliostat field so as to optimize the energy collection efficiency as well as to reduce the system operating cost. This work, as the first part of the consecutive works, presents heliostat aiming mint allocation scheme which will be used in the heliostat field control algorithm for 200kW solar thermal power plant built in Daegu, Korea. We first discuss the structure of heliostat field control system required for the implementation of aiming scheme developed in this work. Then the methodologies to allocate the heliostat aiming points on the receiver are discussed. The simulated results show that the heliostat aiming point allocation scheme proposed in this work reduces the magnitude of peak heat flux on the receiver more than 40% from the case of which all the heliostats in the field aim at the center of receiver simultaneously. Also it shows that, when the proposed scheme is used, the degradation of heliostat field optical efficiency is relatively small from the maximal optical efficiency the heliostat field could have.

  • In this study, the effect of water level and temperature on the power generation was investigated in a water tank with an aquavoltaic PV module to perform feasibility research for the development of salt farm aquavoltaic system. The silicon solar cell attached to the bottom of each water tank is a 1-cell mini module, and the underwater effects of the crystal phase (19.0~19.9% of single- & 17.9~19.9% of poly-crystalline) of the PV module were investigated, and power generation characteristics for water level (0~10 cm) and temperature (10~40℃) were analyzed. The deterioration coefficients according to the water level and temperature of each single- and poly-crystalline module were investigated at very similar levels such as, -2.01 %/cm and -2.02 %/cm, -0.50 %/℃ and -0.48 %/℃, respectively. Therefore, in salt farm aquavoltaic system, water levels need to maintain as low as possible, and heat-induced degradation is similar to those shown in general land, and no factors have been found to be affected by the underwater environment depending on the determination.

  • This study is about an analysis of surplus solar energy by important greenhouse type using Typical Meteorological Year (TMY) data which was secured in order to provide basic data for designing an optimum thermal storage system to accumulate surplus solar energy generated in greenhouses during the daytime. The 07-auto-1 and 08-auto-1 types showed similar heat budget tendencies regardless of greenhouse types. In other words, the ratios of surplus solar energy were about 20.0~29.0% regardless of greenhouse type. About 54.0~225.0% and 53.0~218.0% of required heating energy will be able to be supplemented respectively according to the greenhouse types. The 07-mono-1 and 07-mono-3 types also showed similar heat budget tendencies regardless of greenhouse types. In other words, the ratios of surplus solar energy were about 20.0~26.0% and 21.0~27.0% respectively by greenhouse type. About 57.0~211.0% and 62.0~228.0% of required heating energy will be able to be supplemented by greenhouse type. Except for Daegwallyeong and Suwon area, other regions can cover heating energy only by surplus solar energy, according to the study.

  • This experimental study was carried out to examine the heat transfer characteristics of a 2-dimensional impinging air jet on a flat plate with a set of square rods. The objectives of the study were to investigate the flow and heat transfer characteristics caused by the square rods. Experiment was carried out first without using the rods to establish the baseline heat transfer performance. Then, rods of different widths and clearances were installed to cause the turbulence on the fluid flow. When rods are installed in front of the plate, the acceleration of the flow and the turbulence generation due to the rods and reattachment of the flow seem to contribute to the observed heat transfer augmentation and the heat transfer augmentation increases as the clearance decreases. With wider individual rod the heat transfer coefficient is higher, which is due to the increased acceleration and development of the eddies just before the rods.

  • A two-phase closed thermosyphon with circular fins was used as the heat transfer device for storing the thermal energy in paraffin wax. Experiments were carried out for 4, 6 and 8 fins and for various initial temperatures of the wax and power inputs. Heat transfer characteristics along the heat flow path were investigated as well as the overall performance of the system. Some of the important results are as follows:(1) The thermosyphon heat transfer coefficient and the overall heat transfer coefficient increased with the number of fins, whereas the heat transfer coefficient between the fin and the wax decreased; (2) Facilitation of heat transfer by the fins seemed to alleviate the dry-out phenomenon that had been reported to occur in case of bare thermosyphon; and (3) The horizontal fins had adverse effect of subduing a full scale convection in the wax, and the increase of the number of fins delayed the onset of local convection between the fins.

  • Temperature fields and temperature deformations induced by time-varying solar radiation, shadow, and heat exchange are of great importance for the ride safety and quality of the maglev system. Accurate evaluations of their effects on the dynamic performances are necessary to avoid unexpected loss of service performance. This paper presents a numerical approach to determine temperature effects on the maglev train/guideway interaction system. Heat flux density and heat transfer coefficient of different components of a 25 m simply supported concrete guideway on Shanghai High-speed Maglev Commercial Operation Line is calculated, and an appropriate section mesh is used to consider the time-varying shadow on guideway surfaces. Based on the heat-stress coupled technology, temperature distributions and deformation fields of the guideway are then computed via Finite Element method. Combining guideway irregularities and thermal deformations as the external excitations, a numerical maglev train/guideway interaction model is proposed to analyze the temperature effect. The responses comparison including and excluding temperature effect indicates that the temperature deformation plays an important role in amplifying the response of a running maglev, and the parameter analysis results suggest that climatic and environmental factors significantly affect the temperature effects on the coupled maglev system.

  • In this study, the evaluation of environmental performance of the building energy system of domestic commercial sector was carried out. Based on the theory of linear programming model, we established an evaluation model satisfying object functions and constraint conditions. Employing the model, the evaluation of building energy system was performed under the consideration of cost and environmental constraint conditions. As an evaluation tool, MARKAL (MARKet Allocation) known as a market distribution model was employed. We analyzed scenarios of Case I (Base Scenarios) through Case IX established by the combination of the components of building energy system such as glazing, building skin, core, and heat source system. According to the results of the evaluation, highest contribution on the useful energy demand was obtained from the building energy system combined with solar heat source system, when the total amounts of $CO_2$ exhaust as an environmental constraint condition is assumed to be the level of 1995.

  • Heat pumps have attracted considerable attention as a green energy system because they use renewable energy, such as geothermal, solar energy and waste heat, and can have a low electricity consumption rate compared to other conventional electric heating system. Many studies of high efficient heat pump system design was performed previously, but it is not easy to find any an analytical model that consists of components (e.g. compressor, heat exchangers, and expansion valve), not only having an interrelation and interconnection each other but also being flexible to any change in geometry and operating parameters. In this study, a computational model was developed for a heat pump with warm air as a heat source using the one-dimensional modeling software, AMESim. In combination with an independently-developed analytical model for a scroll compressor, the heat pump model can simulate the physical characteristics and actual behavior of the heat pump precisely. In addition, the reliability of the model was improved by verifying the simulation results using experimental data. The simulation data fell into the 10% error range compared with the experimental data. The heat pump model can be used for system optimization studies of product development and applied to other applications in a range of industrial field.
