With the change in Earth's ecosystems due to climate change, a number of studies on zero energy buildings have been conducted globally, due to the depletion of energy and resources. However, most studies have concentrated on residential and office buildings and the performance predictions were made only in the design phase. This study verifies the zero-energy performance in the operational phase by acquiring and analyzing data after the completion of an exhibition building. This building was a retention building, in which a renewable energy system using a passive house building envelope, solar photovoltaic power generation panels, as well as fuel cells were adopted to minimize the maintenance cost for future energy-zero operations. In addition, the energy performance of the building was predicted through prior simulations, and this was compared with actual measured values to evaluate the energy performance of the actual operational records quantitatively. The energy independence rate during the measurement period of the target building was 123% and the carbon reduction due to the energy production on the site was 408.07 tons. The carbon reduction exceeded the carbon emission (331.5 tons), which verified the carbon zero and zero-energy performances.
The purpose of this study is to review the U.S. renewable energy policies implemented by the federal government and the state governments to investigate potential barriers of renewable energy expansion and to develop policy implications for the successful renewable energy policy making in Korea. Recently, the restructuring in the energy supply chain has been being a new trend in many countries that shows a transition from traditional fossil fuels to sustainable renewable energy sources. The United States has enforced effective renewable energy policies (i.e., regulatory policies, financial incentives), which have led to the exploding growth of renewable energy facilities and productions over the last ten years. For example, many state governments in the U.S. are implementing Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) policies that require increased energy supply from renewable energy sources (i.e., solar, wind and geothermal). These RPS policies are expected to account for at least 10-50 percent of total electricity production in the next fifteen years. As part of results, in the recent three years, renewable energy in the U.S provided over 50 percent of total new power generation constructions. On the other hand, Korea initiated to develop climate change policies in 2008 for the Green Growth Policy that set up a target reduction of national Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions up to 37 percent by 2025. However, statistical data for accumulated renewable energy capacity refer that Korea is still in its early stage that contribute to only 7 percent of the total electricity production capacity and of which hydroelectric power occupied most of the production. Thus, new administration in Korea announced a new renewable energy policy (Renewable Energy 3020 Plan) in 2017 that will require over 95 percent of the total new generations as renewable energy facilities to achieve up to 20 percent of the total electricity production from renewable energy sources by 2030. However, to date, there have not been enough studies to figure out the barriers of the current policy environment and to develop implications about renewable energy policies to support the government plan in Korea. Therefore, this study reviewed the U.S. renewable energy policies compared with Korean policies that could show model cases to introduce related policies and to develop improved incentives to rapidly spread out renewable energy facilities in Korea.
Thermochemical 2-step methane reforming, involving the reduction of metal oxide with methane to produce syn-gas and the oxidation of the reduced metal oxide with water to produce pure hydrogen, was investigated on ferrite-based metal oxide mediums and $WO_{3}/ZrO_{2}$. Thermochemical 2-step methane reforming were accomplished at 900 $^{\circ}C$(syn-gas production step) and 800 $^{\circ}C$(water-splitting step). In syn-gas production step, it appeared carbon deposition on metal oxides with increasing react ion time. Various mediums showed the different starting point of carbon deposition each other. To minimize the carbon deposition, the reaction time was controlled before the starting point of carbon deposition. As a result, $CO_{x}$ were not evolved in water-splitting step, Among the various metal oxides, $Mn-ferrite/ZrO_{2}$ showed high reactivity, proper $H_{2}/CO$ ratio, high selectivity of undesired $CO_{2}$ and high evolution of $H_{2}$.

Increasing energy prices and growing concerns about global warming address the need to improve energy self-sufficiency in many industrial and municipal sectors. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are representative of energy-consuming facilities in Korea, accounting for 5% of national energy consumption. We present renewable energy technologies and energy self-sufficiency scenarios in a municipal WWTP ($30,000m^3d^{-1}$) located in Yongin, South Korea. By employing photovoltaics (PV, 135 kW), small hydropower turbine (10 kW), and thermal energy from treated effluent (25 RT: refrigeration ton) within the WWTP, a total of 142 tonne of oil equivalent (toe) of energy was estimated to be generated, accounting for $365ton\;CO_2\;yr^{-1}$ of greenhouse gas emission reduction. Core renewable technologies under consideration include 1) hybrid solar PV system consisting of fixed PV, dual-axis PV, and building integrated PV, 2) low-head small hydropower plant specifically designed for treated effluent, 3) effluent heat recovery system for heating and air conditioning. In addition to these core technologies, smart operation and management scheme will be presented for enhancing overall energy savings and distribution within the WWTP.
Development of low cost hybrid functional nano-structured materials has great interest to enhance sensitivity of dye-sensitized solar cells and reduction of the production cost. In this talk we will discuss about using different processes to modify functional characteristics of photoelectrode and investigate effects of chemical modification without significant structural variation on to enhance performance of DSSCs. Efficient electron transportation between dye molecules and photoelectrode has been obtained by appropriate chemical modification and efficiency of DSSC has been significantly improved. A comparative analysis on effects of surface functional and electron states of photoelectrode on VOC and JSC has been also carried out to discuss effects of composite materials on physical structure and electronic properties to correlate enhanced performance of these devices.
Since Gratzel et al. reported the first efficient dye-sensitized solar cells(DSSCs) in 1991, they have attracted much attention due to their relatively high power conversion efficiency and potentially low cost production. To date, high performance and good stability of DSSC based on Ru-dyes as a photosensitizer had been widely addressed in the literatures. However, the Ru-dyes are facing the problem of manufacturing costs and environmental issues. In order to obtain even cheaper photosensitizers for DSSC, the metal-free organic photosensitizers are strongly desired. The metal-free organic dyes offer superior molar extinction coefficients, low cost, and diverse molecular structures as compared to the conventional Ru-dyes, In this work, we have studied on the synthesis and characterization of the organo dendritic dyes containing different number of electron acceptor moieties in a molecule.

The MERRA reanalysis data provided online by NASA was applied to predict the annual energy productions of two largest wind farms in Korea. The two wind farms, Gangwon wind farm and Yeongyang wind farm, are located on complex terrain. For the prediction, a commercial CFD program, WindSim, was used. The annual energy productions of the two wind farms were obtained for three separate years of MERRA data from June 2007 to May 2012, and the results were compared with the measured values listed in the CDM reports of the two wind farms. As the result, the prediction errors of six comparisons were within 9 percent when the availabilities of the wind farms were assumed to be 100 percent. Although further investigations are necessary, the MERRA reanalysis data seem useful tentatively to predict adjacent wind resources when measurement data are not available.
Chalcogenide-based semiconductors, such as $CuInSe_2$, $CuGaSe_2$, Cu(In,Ga)$Se_2$ (CIGS), and CdTe have attracted considerable interest as efficient materials in thin film solar cells (TFSCs). Currently, CIGS and CdTe TFSCs have demonstrated the highest power conversion efficiency (PCE) of over 11% in module production. However, commercialized CIGS and CdTe TFSCs have some limitations due to the scarcity of In, Ga, and Te and the environmental issues associated with Cd and Se. Recently, kesterite CZTS, which is one of the In- and Ga- free absorber materials, has been attracted considerable attention as a new candidate for use as an absorber material in thin film solar cells. The CZTS-based absorber material has outstanding characteristics such as band gap energy of 1.0 eV to 1.5 eV, high absorption coefficient on the order of $10^4cm^{-1}$, and high theoretical conversion efficiency of 32.2% in thin film solar cells. Despite these promising characteristics, research into CZTS-based thin film solar cells is still incomprehensive and related reports are quite few compared to those for CIGS thin film solar cells, which show high efficiency of over 20%. The recent development of kesterite-based CZTS thin film solar cells is summarized in this work. The new challenges for enhanced performance in CZTS thin films are examined and prospective issues are addressed as well.

ZnO/Zn redox cycle is the one of the promising thermochemical cycles for hydrogen production via water splitting with high temperature heat source like a concentrated solar energy. This paper reports the particle size effect of Zinc on water splitting behavior. Water splitting reaction experiments were carried out at isothermal conditions of 350 and 400$^{\circ}C$ in TGA (Thermo Gravimetric Analyzer) using four commercial Zinc powders (nano, <10 ${\mu}m$, <150 ${\mu}m$ and $150{\sim}600\;{\mu}m$ particle sizes). Before the experiments, average particle size of Zinc powders was analyzed by PSA (Particle Size Analysis). After the experiments, XRD (X-Ray Diffraction) and SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) analyses were conducted on the samples. The experimental results showed that particle size had a effect on the conversion of Zinc to ZnO. Zinc conversion was increased, as the particle size decreased. Especially, the nano size particles were aggregated and the particle's morphology changed on the surface during hydrolysis reaction.
The main purpose of this paper is to develop the new BIPV module equipped with vacuum glass. Beacuse BIPV module has a function of architectural materials, thermal and PV performance should be simultaneously evaluated. To improve the thermal performance of BIPV module, this study developed BIPV module equipped with a vacuum glass. Those BIPV module was tested with a variety of encapsulants. The results are as follows. When a vacuum glass is laminated with EVA or PVB, it was broken. The reason seems to be bending by unbalance of heat expansion with center and edge of vacuum glass. In case of lamination with resin, there is no breakage and no bending of vacuum glass. Because production was conducted in low pressure & low temperature conditions. And it was also found that vacuum glass does not interfere with the UV curing process.
