Deep soil mixing, DSM technique has been widely used to improve the engineering properties of problematic soils. Due to growing urbanization and the industrial developments, disposal of brick dust poses a big problem and causes environmental problems. This study aims to use brick dust in DSM application in order to minimize the waste in brick industry and to evaluate its effect on the improvement of the geotechnical properties. Three different percentages of cement content: (10, 15 and 20%) were used in the formation of soil-cement mixture. Unlike the other studies in the literature, various percentages of waste brick dust: (10, 20 and 30%) were used as partial replacement of cement in soil-cement mixture. The results indicated that addition of waste brick dust into soil-cement mixture had positive effect on the inherent strength and stiffness of loose sand. Cement replaced by 20% of brick dust gave the best results and reduced the final setting time of cement and resulted in an increase in unconfined compressive strength, modulus of elasticity and resilient modulus of sand mixed with cement and brick dust. The findings were also supported by the microscopic images of the specimens with different percentages of waste brick dust and it was observed that waste brick dust caused an increase in the interlocking between the particles and resulted in an increase in soil strength. Using waste brick dust as a replacement material seems to be promising for improving the geotechnical properties of loose sand.
This work investigated the use of sugarcane bagasse ash (SCBA) generated by an energy cogeneration process in sugarcane mill as an alternative raw material in soil-cement brick. The SCBA obtained from a sugarcane mill located in southeastern Brazil was characterized with respect to its chemical composition, organic matter content, X-ray diffraction, plasticity, and pozzolonic activity. Soil-cement bricks were prepared by pressing and curing. Later, they were tested to determine technical properties (e.g., volumetric shrinkage, apparent density, water absorption, and compressive strength), present crystalline phases, and microstructural evolution. It was found that the SCBA contains appreciable amounts of silica ($SiO_2$) and organic matter. The results showed that the SCBA could be used in soil-cement bricks, in the range up to 30 wt.%, as a partial replacement for Portland cement. These results suggest that the SCBA could be valorized for manufacturing low-cost soil-cement bricks.

To analyze the characteristics of unconfined compressive strength of reinforced soil bricks made of clayey and sandy mixed with cement, lime, staple fiber and their combinatioin , a series of unified comparessive tests was performed. The resutls are summarized as follows ; 1) Reinforcing effect of reinforced clayed soil and that of soil brick of sandy soil mixed with cement and staple fiber is 8 times greater than no reinforced sandy sol. Therefore, the reinforcing effect seems to be greater in sandy soil than in clayey soil . 2) Lime shows a negative reinforcing effect in clayed soil but a little reinforcing effect in sandy soil. 3) It is appeared that strain at failure of soil brick reinforced with staple fiber is greater than that of unreinforced brick regrardless of soil's type.
This study aims to measure and to analyze the characteristics of thermal environment of the various permeable pavement materials such as a break stone pavement (Green block cubic), soil protection pavement (Soil tector), soil cement pavement and ceramic brick pavement under the summer outdoor environment. The thermal environment characteristics measured in the study includes the changes of surface temperature during the day, and long and short wave radiation of each pavement surface. The experimental condition is based on the data on the hottest temperature (August 9, 2006, $37.1^{\circ}C$) of the year. The albedo was the highest on the break stone pavement(0.8) from 12:00 to 14:00. The albedo of the ceramic brick pavement, a soil tector pavement and soil cement pavement were 0.35, 0.29 and 0.27 from 12:00 to 14:00, respectively. The peak surface temperature and long wave radiation was the highest on the soil protection pavements($56.6^{\circ}C$/627 W/$m^2$). The peak surface temperatures and long wave radiation on the ceramic brick pavement, a stone brick pavement and soil cement pavement were $51.7^{\circ}C$/627 W/$m^2$, $48.8^{\circ}C$/607 W/$m^2$ and $45.9^{\circ}C$/582 W/$m^2$, respectively. The heat environment was better on the break stone pavement than on the other pavements. This is mainly due to the high albedo of the break stone pavement(0.8) while the albedo value of a ceramic brick pavement, a soil tactor pavement and soil cement pavement were 0.35. 0.29 and 0.27. Large heat capacity($2,629kJ/m^3{\cdot}K$) of the stone brick pavements also contributes to this difference. The heat environment was better on the soil cement pavement than the soil tector pavement. This is mainly due to the evaporation of the soil cement pavement while the active evaporation of the soil tactor pavement was not continued after two days from the rainfall event. To improve the thermal environments in the urban area, it is recommended to raise the albedo of the pavements by brightening the surface color of the pavement materials. Further studies on the pavement materials and the construction methods which can enhance the continuous evapotranspiration from the pavements surface are needed.

The purpose of this study is to test and compare the efficiency of heating-system for materials and construction of the wall, ceiling and window in soil brick house, cement house and boulder house respectively, in order to construct ideal farm houses in rural area. The results obtained were as follows: 1. In heat conservation due to construction of walls the thermal efficiency of cement brick house was equivalent to 66.3% of that of soil brick house, and boulder house 60.3% 2. In the case of ceiling, the thermal efficiency of paper ceiling was amounted to 84.2% of that of the composite ceiling (thickness 6mm veneer+thickness. l0m chaffs), and the common ceiling putting on soil above the ceiling, 76% of the composite while the efficiency of the ceiling putting on chaffs above them was 15.8% higher than that of the paper. 3. In the case of improving the window, the double type was 12% higher than. the efficiency of single type. 4. The warming velocity of conventional house was slower but the velocity of radiation was quicker than that of experimental one. It was thought to be due to unscietific constructions of the room bottom, fire inlet and chimney, 5. The temperature gradient line was not dependad upon the amount of throwing into fuel in the rural farm house. 6. It was concluded that the final thermal efficiency of the conventional farm house was 10.6% lower than that of experimental farm house.

Concrete bricks and hollow concrete block products manufactured using ordinary portland cement react with salt and carbon dioxide absorbed from the soil and atmosphere in the use environment, causing contamination such as efflorescence. This is due to the reaction between calcium hydroxide, a cement hydration product, and carbon dioxide, producing and eluting calcium carbonate. This study was a preliminary study to compare and evaluate the reduction of efflorescence in concrete bricks and hollow concrete block products manufactured using carbon dioxide reaction hardening cement. The purpose was to evaluate the efflorescence occurrence in products using ordinary Portland cement.

This study was conducted to investigate the strength of soil cement for varied curing temperatures (0,10,20,30,40,50,60$^{\circ}C$) and cement content (3,6,9,12%) in four cement-stabilized soils (KY: sand, MH: sand, SS: sandy loam, JJ:loam). The experimental results obtained from unconfined compressive strength tests were as follows: 1. According to increase of curing temperature as 30,40,50, and 60$^{\circ}C$, the unconfiened compressive strength of soil cement increased, the rate of increase in the early curing period was large, and around 120 hours was suifficient curing time to complete hardening. 2. The strength at 10$^{\circ}C$ decreased to the rate of 30 to 40 percent than that of 20$^{\circ}C$ while the strength at 0$^{\circ}C$ was very small, strength of soil cement increased in cold weather unless that the temperature was below 0$^{\circ}C$ 3. The average maximum temperature, about 30$^{\circ}C$ during July and August in Korea may be recommended for a optimum construction period to increase the strength of soil cement. 4. Accelerated curing time that strength was equivalent to 28-Day norma1 curing decreased in accordance with the increase of curing temperature, and also accelerated curing decreased the effect of cement content. Accelerated curing that strength was equivalent to 28-day normal curing for soil cement of cement content 9% and temperature 60$^{\circ}C$ was 45 hours; KY, 50 hours: MH, 40 hours; SS, 34 hours; JJ. 5. According to the increase of the percent passing of No. 200 sieve, accelerated curing times became shorter to become the required stength. 6. Relation between accelerated curing times and normal curing days was showeda linear of which slope decreased in accordance with the increase of curing temperature, it may be expressed as follows: (1). 30$^{\circ}C$ t=3.6d+6(r=0.97) (2). 40$^{\circ}C$ t=3.2d-5.1(r=0.95) (3). 50$^{\circ}C$ t=2.1d-4.0(r=0.93) (4). 60$^{\circ}C$ t=1.4d+4.0(r=0.90) in which t=accelerate curing time. d=normal curing day. 7. Accelerated curing time that the strength was equivalent to 35kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ which was the strength of cement brick was 96 hours at temperature 30$^{\circ}C$ to SS 9%, and 120 hours at temperature 50$^{\circ}C$ to JJ 9%, Consequently, a economic soil cement brick may be made in future.
Recently due to dramatically increasing demand of liquid crystal display (LCD) panel in IT industry, the used LCD panel glass has been wasted from electronic items, and also panel glass of poor quality during manufacturing process. The wasted LCD panel glass was crushed in the range of 0.42 to 2mm and evaluated for its usefulness as a aggregate in production of cement concrete brick. Cement concrete specimens with various mixing ratios of weathered granite soil, LCD panel glass and cement were cured in wetness for 7 days at $40^{\circ}C$ and then tested for uniaxial comprehensive strength (UCS)(KS F 4004 method). Specimen with a mixing ratio, 1:6:3, of weathered granite, LCD panel glass and cement, respectively, showed the highest average in the UCS test($26.51N/mm^2$). It is much higher than that of commercial brick without glass($17.00N/mm^2$). Conclusively waste LCD panel glass can be reutilized economically as a raw building material of good quality.

This study identified the materials and construction methods of 'Old Wall' in 13 villages which were designated as National Registered Cultural Heritage at the time of designation and examined the their structural changes based on field survey. The results are as follows: First, the 'Old Wall' consisted of 10 Soil-Stone Wall and 5 Stone Wall. At the time of designation, Stone Wall, which was built irregularly by dry-construction of natural stones, is similar in shape, but Soil-Stone Wall showed difference by the construction method of making used stones, joints, and faces. Second, the study extracted the changes of 'Old Wall' by repair and examined the changes of construction methods as well as the substitution and addition of materials of structure. The wall-roof was built with cement roof-tile and asbestos slate which have the advantage improve durability and cost-effectiveness. In addition, tile-mouth soil was added to korean traditional roof-tile to prevent rainwater from flowing in. Besides, to improve constructional convenience, the natural stone of the wall-body was replaced with blast stone, float stone and cut stone. Cement block, cement brick and cement mortar were frequently used to repair as well. As Soil-Stone Wall was transformed from irregular pattern-construction to comb pattern-construction and wet-construction was changed to dry-construction, it caused landscape and structural problems. Also, the layer of cement mortar applied to wall-foundation blocked the flow of rainwater that was induced by dry-construction of natural stones. Third, the study regarded that the problem with the repair of 'Old Wall' may occur as it is located in living space, because the owner of the wall could repair for the minor damages without technical knowledge. In addition, it is difficult for repair companies in charge of maintenance of Cultural Heritage to supply local materials, and it is differential construction specifications are not applied.

In order to investigate the applicability and suitability of the industrial by-products to landfill final cover, field pilot-scale lysimeter experiments were carried out. The mixture of loamy soil, bottom ash, and construction waste was placed as a cover material in lysimeter($2m{\times}6m{\times}1.2m$) which were constructed with cement brick, and then, volumetric water contents, pF value, and the quantity of runoff and seepage of treatment boxes filled with the mixture of loamy soil and the industrial by-products were monitored from July, 2007 to February, 2008. Among the cases tested, consequently, the case containing the mixture of bottom ash and loamy soil was most effective in engineering and hydrological properties and water retention ability.
