  • In this study, Song-Cheon river Basin located at Dae-kwan-lyong Meyn in Kang-Won Province was monitored to analyze characteristics of non-point source pollution during the snowmelt period. The characteristics of NPS pollution such as runoff, change in water quality and pollutant loads by snowmelt were investigated from 23th February 2010 to 27th April 2010. The results showed that The climate change effects flow, turbidity and concentration of SS and COD with showing similar trend of fluctuation. Daily pollutant loads per unit area were SS 74.43 kg/ha/day, COD 1.25 kg/ha/day, BOD 0.21 kg/ha/day, TN 0.717 kg/ha/day, TP 0.141 kg/ha/day and the flow weight mean concentration has been SS 985.97 mg/L, COD 16.28 mg/L, BOD 2.67 mg/L, TN 9.302 mg/L, TP 1.834 mg/L, respectively. The flow and pollutant loads both of SS and of COD significantly increased during the snowmelt period. Because structurally loosen soil by freezing and thawing deteriorates water quality, research and management measures will be needed.

  • This paper presents a procedure of evaluation of reservoir capacity for additional water storage for dam rehabilitation. One of the techniques on the extension of rainfall has been developed, and the daily stream flows were simulated by the NWS-PC long-term rainfall-runoff model with the input of the extended daily rainfall which was stochastically generated by the nonhomogeneous markov chain model. We peformed a reliability analysis to Guisan dam about the optimal capacity of dam rehabilitation by using performance criteria that Hashimoto et al. (1982) presented. We estimated that the most suitable water level is approximately 155EL.M. suggested that this method can use supplemental methods to estimate optimum dam scale.

  • The purpose of this study was to calibrate the hydrologic parameters of SWAT model and analyze the daily runoff for the study watershed using SWAT-CUP. The Hardware watershed is located in Virginia, USA. The watershed area is $356.15km^2$, and the land use accounts for 73.4 % of forest and 23.2 % of pasture. Input data for the SWAT model were obtained from the digital elevation map, landuse map, soil map and others. Water flow data from 1990 to 1994 was used for calibration and from 1997 to 2005 was for validation. The SUFI-2 module of the SWAT-CUP program was used to calibrate the hydrologic parameters. The parameters were calibrated for the highly sensitive parameters presented in previous studies. The P-factor, R-factor, $R^2$, Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency (NS), and average flow were used for the goodness-of-fit measures. The applicability of the model was evaluated by sequentially increasing the number of applied parameters from 4 to 11. In this study, 10-parameter set was accepted for calibration in consideration of goodness-of-fit measures. For the calibration period, P-factor was 0.85, R-factor was 1.76, $R^2$ was 0.51 and NS was 0.49. The model was validated using the adjusted ranges of selected parameters. For the validation period, P-factor was 0.78, R-factor was 1.60, $R^2$ was 0.60 and NS was 0.57.

  • In Korea, the demand for water is increasing greatly due to Korea's raqid economic progress which is similar to Japan's. A correct estimation of the runoff factors is the question that must be settled first to establish the appropritae plans for water use and water resources. of these plans the estimation of catchment evapotranspiration for every river basin is the subject of the most importance. It is impossible theoretically to measure evapotranspiration directly, because it is an at mospheric translatory phenomenon. Many approaches have been devised to estimate evapotranspiration, but each of these methods estimates from information taken from a specified point, and these methods are considered incomplete for estimating catchment evapotranspiration. In this paper, the seasonal evapotranspiration estimating method that was proposed by Linsly and was applied in the Kamigamo exprimental basin (subjected to Kyoto Univ.) by Takase et al, was used for the Geum river which is the main river in Korea. Conclusion of experiment. 1) The average annual Ec in this river basin from 1966 to 1972 was 470mm. That is considered appropriate since the average value for the six other large river basin in korea was 485mm. 2) The Ec/Ep and Ec/Epm ratios were 0.43 and 0.52, respectively (Ec : estimated evapotranspiration by water balance method, Ep : average pan evaporation, Epm : evaporation by Penman method). The seasonal Ec/Ep ratios were : 0.4 in spring, 0.6 in summer, 0.4 in autumn and 0.2 in winter. These are rather small when compared to Japan's or England's. 3) The reason for this was that the precipitational difference in wet and dry seasons were greater, an there was not sufficient soil moisture harmonize with the evapotranspiration capacity in the dry season, and that evapotranspiration was small due to the numerous barren mountains.

  • Sediment discharge by rainfall runoff affects water quality in rivers such as turbid water, eutrophication. In order to solve various problems caused by soil loss, it is important to establish a sediment management plan for watersheds and rivers in advance. However, there is a lack of sediment data available for estimating sediment discharge in ungauged basins.. Thus, reasonable research is very important to evaluate and predict the sediment discharge quantitatively. In this study, cluster analysis was conducted to classify gauged watersheds into hydrologically homogeneous groups based on the watershed characteristics. Also, this study suggests a method to efficiently predict the sediment discharge for ungauged basins by developing and evaluating the SDR equations based on the PA-SDR module. As the result, the SDR equations for the classified watersheds were derived to predict the most reasonable sediment discharge of ungauged basins with 0.24 % ~ 10.89 % errors. It was found that the optimal parameters for the gauged basins reflect well characteristic of sediment movement. SDR equations proposed in this study will be available for estimating sediment discharge on ungauged basins. Also it is possible to utilize establishing the appropriate sediment management plan for integrated management of watershed and river in Korea.

  • Field experiment was performed to investigate water and nutrient mass balances in paddy field with groundwater irrigation from May to October, 2001. The total water inflow was about 1,183mm in which rainfall, overflow from upstream paddy, and groundwater irrigation accounted for 43, 30, and 27%, respectively. Notice that the precipitation of the study period was less than the average annual precipitation. The total drainage was almost balanced with the inflow and more than half of it was occurred by surface drainage. From the nutrient mass balance analysis, the T-P output (17.56kg/ha) was estimated slightly lower than the input (20.90kg/ha) and the T-N output (130.41kg/ha) was slightly greater than the input(129.24kg/ha). However, the difference was within the expectation and the nutrient mass was thought to be balanced considering uncertainties in field experiment and other activities not included in the study such as algae and soil microorganisms. The surface discharge of nutrient, which was about 10% of total nutrient output, was mainly affected by fertilization and rainfall runoff. Therefore, prudent surface drainage plan might be necessary particularly for the fertilization period to prevent degradation of receiving water quality. The study was performed under abnormally low rainfall compared to the average annual rainfall record, and further monitoring in diverse rainfalls and irrigation methods is recommended to estimate nutrient behavior in the paddy field more reasonably.

  • The objective of this study is to analyze the trend of changes in the water circulation rates under climate change by adopting the concept of WCR defined by the Ministry of Environment. With the need for sound water circulation recovery, the MOE proposed the idea of WCR as (1-direct flow/precipitation). The guideline for calculating WCR suggests the SCS method, which is only suitable for short term rainfall events. However, climate change, which affects WCR significantly, is a global phenomenon and happens gradually over a long period. Therefore, long-term trends in WCRs should also be considered when analyzing changes in WCR due to climate change. RCP (Representative Concentration Pathway) 4.5 and 8.5 scenarios were used to simulate future runoff. SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) was run under the future daily data from GCMs (General Circulation Models) after the calibration. In 2085s, monthly WCR decreased by 4.2-9.9% and 3.3-8.7% in April and October. However, the WCR in the winter increased as the precipitation during the winter decreased compared to the baseline. In the aspect of yearly WCR, the value showed a decrease in most GCMs in the mid-long future. In particular, in the case of the RCP 8.5 scenario, the WCR reduced 2-3 times rapidly than the RCP 4.5 scenario. The WCR of 2055s did not significantly differ from the 2025s, but the value declined by 0.6-2.8% at 2085s.

  • As the development of national lands increase, the necessity to develop less favorable terrain also increases. It also becomes more difficult and complicated to provide access that is both economical and safe from contributing to soil erosion on roadsides and to londscape damages. Because of the increased and justified emphasis upon environmental degradation, proper stabilization of the cut-and bank slopes of roadsides, plant sites and building sites in Korea requires careful planning as well as execution of the constructions. All fill slopes should be compacted to a degree consistent with design standards and material properties. Drainage facilities should be provided to prevent damaging concentrations of surface runoff and to avoid high pore pressures in cuts and fills. All surfaces of cut-fill slopes should be revegetated with suitable species as soon as possible after construction. To stabilize the cut-fill slopes of highway roadsides should be considerded the factor of stabilization as well as landscape conservation especially. Such basic influences as the effects of vegetations on water balance of rain fall, on the control of surface erosion and on the surface slope failures are briefly discussed in the report.

  • This study was carried out to analyse the landslide characteristics by ground investigation, borehole image processing system, field seismic test, laboratory test and ground stability analysis at the landsliding area occurred in Maeri, Sangdong-myeon, Gimhaesi, Gyeongsangnam-do. Region I needs to install data logger system to monitor a land displacement during the heavy rainfall events because the region can be liable to occur the land slide by land creeping. It is needed to restore rapidly, if the land displacement occurs in Region I. Region II needs to monitor and repair because of the possibility of slope failure by long-term soil loss. Region III needs constructions to remove ground runoff and ground water to be infiltrated from talus. Region IV where is a stable region, needs to be protected from land cutting or other man-made damage.
