The purpose of the experiment was to determine the effect of nitrogen sources (urea, ammonium sulphate, ammonium nitrate) and potassium sources (potassium chloride, potassium sulphate) on the growth and quality of Zoysia japonica Steud. This experiment was conducted at Seoul City University turf field from 1988 to 1989. The results of this experiment were summarized as follows; 1. Urea and Ammonium sulphate resulted in superior clipping yield compared to ammonium nitrate. The growth of rhizome and stolon increased significantly with urea forms, but ammonium sulphate treated plots exhibited the highest the growth rate of root. 2. Ammonium sulphate showed best turf color rating while ammonium nitrate resulted in the poorest. Prolongation of the green period showed longer in ammonium sulphate and urea treated plots than ammoium nitrate. 3. Urea and ammonium sulphate exhibited superior visible quality and shoot density compared to ammonium nitrate. 4. The uptake of mineral nutrient showed the highest concentration with urea plots. Surface soil pH was allowed to become slightly acid with the ammonium sulphate and potassium sulphate treatments, while the application of N and K sources did not cause significant differences in mineral element content in soil.

This study applied a hydrogeological field survey and isotope investigation to identify source locations and delineate pathways of groundwater contamination by nitrogen compounds. The infiltration and recharge processes were analyzed with groundwater-level fluctuation data and oxygen-hydrogen stable isotope data. The groundwater flow pattern was investigated through groundwater flow modeling and spatial and temporal variation of oxygen isotope data. Based on the flow analysis and nitrogen isotope data, source types of nitrate contamination in groundwater are identified. Groundwater recharge largely occurs in spring and summer due to precipitation or irrigation water in rice fields. Based on oxygen isotope data and cross-correlation between precipitation and groundwater level changes, groundwater recharge was found to be mainly caused by irrigation in spring and by precipitation at other times. The groundwater flow velocity calculated by a time series of spatial correlations, 231 m/yr, is in good accordance with the linear velocity estimated from hydrogeologic data. Nitrate contamination sources are natural and fertilized soils as non-point sources, and septic and animal wastes as point sources. Seasonal loading and spatial distribution of nitrate sources are estimated by using oxygen and nitrogen isotopic data.
This study utilized citric acid as a floating agent in biological denitrification process and assessed its role under different carbon supplying conditions. Several microcosm tests including citric acid active (CAA), precipitating tablet release active (PTRA) and floating tablet release active (FTRA) were conducted to evaluate nitrate denitrification efficacy. In CAA reactors, nitrate removal was accompanied by the formation of denitrification by-products such as nitrite and nitrous oxide, with the extent of nitrate removal being proportional to citric acid concentration. These results suggest that citric acid induced heterotrophic biological denitrification. PTRA reactor that incorporated CAA and the same electron donor showed a similar denitrification efficiency to CAA reactor. FTRA reactor, which contained the same amount of fumarate as PTRA, enhanced denitrification by 7% as compared to the PTRA reactor. The overall results of this work indicate that surplus citric acid can be efficiently utilized in heterotrophic denitrification.

Several physical and chemical methods have been used for remediation contaminated by oils. However the cost was very high and secondary pollution rose during treating. The purpose of this study was to comprision TPH (total petroleum hydrocarbon) removal from artificially contaminated soil by diesel with and without seeding anaerobic digested sludge. After 120 days of overall at 35$^{\circ}C$, removal efficiency of TPH with seeding sludge was 2-3 times higher than blank. Also, the more amount seeding sludge, TPH removal efficiency and CH$_4$ content more obtained. It was sad that seeding of anaerobic digested sludge was a good method for enhancing TPH removal efficiency without increasing operating cost. Sulfate, nitrate-reducing, methanogenic condition were evaluated for alkane, isoprenoid as target contaminated soil.
The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of organic fertilizers on soil properties and growth and quality of melon. Organic fertilizer was applied in soil at the rate of 0, 0.5, 1, 2N according to Rural Development Administration guideline in Korea. The fertilizer had no effects on plant growth-rate parameters, including plant height, leaf number, and leaf size. There were minor effects on the fruit quality parameters such as fruit weight, fruit length, fruit width, placenta and seed weights, sugar content, and starch content. Ascorbic acid level was decreased as fertilizer level was increased. The level of nitrate in groundwater increased with increased levels of N.

The purpose of this research is to write out vulnerability for western area in Jeju island by using drastic method which is the most frequently utilized among the writing techniques of underground water vulnerability. In case of aquifer, it was divided into two types, gravel layer or not and rated. And soil media was rated two kinds of method. Plan 1 is concerned with only soil class and plan 2 is concerned with soil class and gravels (or rocks), Vadose zone was rated differently according to the ratio of gravel layer. In case of plan 1, the scope of drastic index is from the minimum 77 to the maximum 176, on the other hand, plan 2, the scope of drastic index is from the minimum 79 to the maximum 182. In case of using the water quality data of Nitrate from 1994 to 2004, Pearson correlation coefficient are 0.164(Plan 1) and 0.124(Plan 2) and Spearman correlation coefficient are 0.132(Plan 1) and 0.113.

Accidental release of petroleum products from underground storage tank(USTs) is one of the most common causes of groundwater contamination. BTEX is the major components of fuel oils, which are hazardous substances regulated by many nations. In addition to BTEX, other gasoline consituents such as MTBE(methyl-t-buthyl ether), anphthalene are also toxic to humans. Natual attenuation processes include physic, chemical, and biological trasformation. Aerobic and anaerobic biodegradation are believed to be the major processes that account for both containment of the petroleum-hydrocarbon plum and reduction of the contaminant concentrations. Aerobic bioremediation has been highly effective in the remediation of many fuel releases. However, Bioremediation of aromatic hydrocarbons in groundwater and sediments is ofen limited by the inability to provide sufficient oxygen to the contaminated zones due to the low water solubility of oxygen. Anaerobic processes refer to a variety of biodegradation mechanisms that use nitrate, ferric iron, sulfate, and carbon dioxide as terminal electron accepters. The objectives of this study was to conduct laboratory-scale microcosm studies in assessing enhanced bioremediation potential of BTEX and MTBE under various electron accepters(aerobic, nitrate, ferric iron, sulfate) in contaminated Soil. these results suggest that, presents evidence and a variety pattern of the biological removal of aromatic compounds under enhanced nitrate-, Fe(III)-, sulfate-reducing conditions.
A lactic acid bacterium capable of anaerobic respiration was isolated from soil with ferric iron-containing glucose basal medium and identified as L. garvieae by using 16S rDNA sequence homology. The isolate reduced ferric iron, nitrate, and fumarate to ferrous iron, nitrite, and succinate, respectively, under anaerobic $N_2$ atmosphere. Growth of the isolate was increased about 30-39% in glucose basal medium containing nitrate and fumarate, but not in the medium containing ferric iron. Specifically, metabolic reduction of nitrate and fumarate is thought to be controlled by the specific genes fnr, encoding FNR-like protein, and nir, regulating fumarate-nitrate reductase. Reduction activity of ferric iron by the isolate was estimated physiologically, enzymologically, and electrochemically. The results obtained led us to propose that the isolate metabolized nitrate and fumarate as an electron acceptor and has specific enzymes capable of reducing ferric iron in coupling with anaerobic respiration.

This study is to describe continuous-flow analysis (CFA) for the determination of nitrate using hydrazine-copper in plant material and to test precision of this method compared with that of methods, which are RQflex method and salicylic acid method. Samples were leaves of watermelon, cucumber, melon and tomato. Nitrate values measured by the RQflex method were greater than those measured by CFA or salicylic acid method. The correlation of nitrate values between those measured by CFA and salicylic acid method was $R^2=0.9671$, and those measured by CFA between those measured by RQflex method was $R^2=0.9739$. Recovery rate of nitrate added to tissue extract by CFA method was $99.7{\pm}0.25%$.
