  • Application of the soil nailing system is continuously extended to stabilize excavations and slopes. Although there are many applications in the construction site, the system is still needed to improve its mechanical performance and durability. So, the use of FRP for this system can be an alternative for the conventional system. Recently, there has been a greatly increased demand for the use of FRP (fiber reinforced plastic) in civil engineering applications due to their superior mechanical and physical properties. This paper presents an experimental and theoretical study on the flexural behavior of FRP plate to develop fabricated permanent soil nailing system. In this study, mechanical properties of FRP plate have been investigated. Rectangular FRP plates that is simply supported and uniformly loaded over the area of a circle at the center of plate are analyzed by experiment, classical plate theory, and finite element method. From the results of analysis we can determine the shape of curved FRP plate which will exert certain amount of prestressing force in soil nail.

  • An analytical procedure is described to estimate the mobilized tensile forces along the effective lengths of nails. Based on the horizontal focing displacements of a nailed-soil wall experiencing outward tilt about the toe with granular soil deposit, the variation of nail-soil friction coefficient is modeled. Also, the method of overall stability analysis of a nailed-soil wall is presented using the Morgenstem-Price limit-equilibrium slice method. The results predicted by the developed procedure are compared with test measurements. The comparisons show in general good agreement.

  • The Green Wall system is one of segmental concrete crib type earth retaining wall. Green wall is constructed as procedures that lay the front stretchers, rear stretchers and headers then making a rigid body through harden filled soil of interior cell. Recently, Green Wall method is applied in variable cutting ground construction because of advantage which minimize to cut base ground. In case of Green Wall method is constructed with soil nail method, expect that total system stability will increase more than flexible facing because of facing stiffness is big. However, in this case of design, facing stiffness is not considered so that is poor economy. Hence, in this study, stability increasing effect of total system analyze about that soil nail method is constructed with rigidity facing like a Green Wall method. In present study, laboratory model tests was performed for analysis on stability increasing effect of total system about changing stiffness of facing. LEM analysis conducted for evaluation on safety factor of total system sliding that facing condition changed.

  • In the present study, anchor type nail with PC-strand which can add up the pre-stress at the nailing to increase the resistance and shear stress in the whole ground has been investigated. Load-displacement and wall displacement have been analyzed by experimental model and numerical analysis of anchor type nail, nailing, and non-nailing to examine the behavior of anchor type nail. From the experimental results, it was found that horizontal displacement is considerably decreased according to increasing the load in case of anchor type nail added pre-tension. Especially, it was observed that resistance of displacement at the upper wall is increased. The results of numerical analysis show the same results of experimental results.

  • In this study, it was studied on arching characteristics of a grand section tunnel with pre-steel-rib nail reinforcement. In this study, we examine the adaptation of tunnel plan and the case which is based on the strengthening method for preexistence tunnel and other pre-steel-rib nail while the upper part of cover depth is low or soil condition is bad. When the pre-steel-rib nail as new technology and method reinforces the foundation placed of grand section tunnel, it is much better in strengthening effect, safety and effectiveness than the conventional one. After investigation about the plan pre-steel-rib nail method, construction case and calibration data, it was confirmed and examined about the upper part of tunnel for strengthening the pre-steel-rib nail thereby arching characteristics of grand section tunnel using MIDAS/GTS finite element program. Moreover we present the method that could upgrade the accurate installation interval and adaptation method for strengthening effect to adapt the pre-steel-rib nail method in a foundation placed over a tunnel.

  • Soil nailing is the most general method to reinforce the slope by taking pullout and shear resistance force of the nail for stabilizing the slope. Domestic soil nailing design method considers only pullout resistance and does not consider the shear resistance sufficiently. In case of nail, the effect of tensile stress is dominant, but it is desirable to design by considering shear stress as well as tensile stress in case of slope where circle failures occur. Recently, studies on the shear resistance effect of nails have been carried out in the geotechnical field. However, many researches on the shear reinforcement effect of soil nailing have not been conducted until now. Most of the studies are about increasing pullout resistance by improving material, shape and construction method of nail. Therefore, it is necessary to the study on shear resistance of soil nailing and development of new methods to increase the shear force. In this study, large shear test and limit equilibrium analysis have been performed for a new soil nailing method to increase the shear resistance by forming protrusions through pressurized grouting after installing a packer on the outside of deformed bar. The study results showed that shear resistance of protrusion type soil nailing increased compared to soil nailing and it is more effective when applied to the ground with large strength parameters.

  • In the present study, an economic design of Anchored Geosynthetic(AG) System applied mainly to reinforce unstable soil slopes is investigated. For this purpose methods of stability analysis are developed to determine the optimum installation angle, required minimum length and maximum spacing of nails. Anchorage of nails within the soil mass is achieved by frictional resistance to pull out along the effective length of the nails. Cases of infinite slope and finite slope are dealt with individually. Silce methods of stability analysis developed in the present study are limit-equilibrium-based. For the case of finite slope Spencer method which considers interslice force is modified to evalyate the overall stability. In addition, the effects of various design parameters on requried length and spacing of nails corresponding to the optimum orientation of nails are analyzed. Based on the analysis, a simplified equation is given for the optimum nail orientation. Also the importance of optimum nail orientation is illustrated throughout design example, and the appropriateness of judgment criterion are examined.

  • In this paper, we introduced phase optimization techniques in the Soil-Nail design to optimize the reinforcement required for each grade level. The optimal design results at the maximum slope height were further amplified to allow for phase optimization of the horizontal spacing of the Nail in accordance with the change in the height of the slope. The limit equilibrium analysis was performed by step-by-step sloping height, and the safety factor exceeded when the horizontal spacing of four days was fixed. The process of optimization was effectively carried out by densifying the required reinforcement depending on the slope elevation. Also limited to reflect the axial force of the nail into the reinforcement details.Using the method, the members' strength was reflected. When phase optimization technique is applied for each slope height by calculating the stiffening precision, it is judged that it will be more economical to optimize horizontal intervals by effectively reducing the repeated reinterpretation process that satisfies the reference safety ratio for each slope height.
