This study was carried out to establish an improved bioassay system on the side of practicality, pre-emergence bioassay which is more effective in developing soil application natural herbicides. A miniaturized method which have a 50 cm2 of soil surface area and was efficient by 7 times compared to the existing soil application assay ($350cm^2$ of soil surface area) was established, in which four weed species (Echinochloa crus-galli, Digitaria sanguinalis, Aeschynomene indica, and Abutilon theophrasti) were planted and grown in greenhouse. This would be applicable when the amount of screening compound is much more than 50 mg. The initial application rate was desirable at $10,000{\mu}g\;mL^{-1}$. On the other hand, the 6 well plate assay which has 4 weed species in each well containing upland soil and could be conducted in growth chamber, was established. This assay was resulted in minimizing in level of 1/14 test volume and 1/14 amounts of test compound to the conventional method that has been used for screening of synthetic compounds in KRICT, and applicable for the small amount of test compound (less than 10 mg). Therefore, the improved bioassays established in this study would be helpful for a rapid and efficient development of soil application natural herbicides.
In analyzing geotechnical structures, the analysis fields are becoming increasingly diversified. In particular, the need for predicting the thermal behavior of ground materials has become important in fields related to soil freezing. To ensure a reliable assessment of the freezing behavior of the ground, considering the variation in the effective thermal conductivity of soil specimens under various conditions is crucial. In this study, probe experiments were conducted by varying the porosity, initial degree of saturation, and read time settings of the meter. Next, the factors influencing the effective thermal conductivity of the frozen sandy soil were evaluated. The experimental results conducted under different porosity conditions showed a tendency for the effective thermal conductivity of frozen soil to increase as the specimen's porosity decreased. However, as the degree of saturation of the specimen increased, the effective thermal conductivity also increased. The sensitivity of the meter's read time setting to the measurement of effective thermal conductivity was observed. When the read time was set to 1 min, the measured values were in a range similar to that obtained in previous studies conducted in Korea with the same soil specimen.
This study are carried out to an lab model tests to develop a construction method that solidifies high-water content cohesive soil by using filter type drain and vacuum pressure, and that stabilizes the ground by accelerating horizontal drain at incline or in tunnel. The calibration chamber was designed within length of 1.5m and height of 50cm, and a drainage hole for preconsolidation, a switchgear and a piezometer were installed at the bottom part of the chamber. Also, a settlement gage was installed at the top part so that it can measure the settlement by time. The calibration ground basis was made in a form of thin layer from kaolinite and bentonite in 9:1 ratio stirred at 130% water content condition. A filter type drain was installed at chamber center and a vacuum pressure of 0.8MPa was applied through a hose linked to the cap at the top part, then, the settlement was measured in every 1 hour interval. After experiment, the moisture contents were measured by position, then, verified the increase of solidity of the ground through a triaxial compression test on undisturbed profile. After 11 days from the effective date, it was observed that the settlement decreased by maximum 35mm and the water content ratio was reduced by 38% at most while the solidity of the ground increased by 5~8 times greater than before preconsolidation.

To evaluate on the applicability of Chemical Compaction Pile (CCP) method to weak soil improvement, two kinds of testing chambers were fabricated and the changes of water content and shear stress associated with soil types, ages and distances from the center of pile were measured with different mixing proportions of CCP such as bottom ash, lime powder and added admixture. As results of test, it was noted that water content and shear stress of ground are mainly affected by the amount of lime powder and increase of the amount corresponds to rapid improvement of soil. And the improvement depended greatly on the types of soil also. It was finally found that CCP developed can be applicable to bearing pile as well as soil improvement since CCP has a bearing capacity enough to carry loads.

Numerical and experimental studies were conducted on the temperature distribution of a buried steel pipe and surrounding granite frozen soils in the closed system. The relationship between unfrozen water content and temperatures was analysed by laboratory test. The thermal conductivity measurements were made to compare the results with a formula presented by Lachenbruch. A steel container model that consists of a freezing chamber and a buried circular steel pipe was built for the laboratory temperature measurements. The time temperature records were measured experimentally, and those records were compared with numerical results obtained from FEM analysis in order to verify the feasibility. The latent heat effect on the granite frozen soils in the numerical study was considered.
Model pile tests, using a calibration chamber in which the stress state and the relative density can be controlled, were performed in order to study the effects of pile diameter on the plugging rate and bearing capacity of open-ended pile. The model piles used in the test series were devised so that the bearing capacity of an open-ended pile could be measured out into three components. The test results showed that fully plugging depth of an open -ended pile increased with increase in pile diameter and soil density. Moreover, it was found that unit plug capacity decreased with increase in pile diameter, though the penetration ratio or plugging rate of piles was constant. However, the existing formulae for estimation of plug capacity give plug capacity which is constant or increased with increase in pile diameter, when penetration ratio or plugging rate of piles is equal. Thus, it is proposed that the effect of pile diameter as well as plugging rate on bearing capacity of pile must be considered in plug capacity estimation.
Monitoring of $CO_2$ release through the ground surface is essential to confirm the safety of carbon storage projects. We conducted a feasibility study of the multi-channel surface-soil $CO_2$-concentration monitoring (SCM) system as a soil $CO_2$ monitoring tool with a small scale injection test. The background concentrations showed the distinct diurnal variation. The negative relation of $CO_2$ with temperature and the low $CO_2$ concentrations during the day imply that surface-soil $CO_2$ depends on photosynthesis and respiration. After 4.2 kg of $CO_2$ injection (1 m depth for 29 minutes), surface-soil $CO_2$ concentrations increased in the all five chambers, which were located less than 2.8 m of distance from each other. The $CO_2$ concentrations seem to be recovered to the background around 4 hours after the injection ended. To determine the leakage, the data from Chamber 2 and 5 with low increase rates were used for statistical analyses. Coefficient of variation for 30 minutes ($CV_{30min}$.) is efficient to determine a leakage signal, with reflecting the fast change in $CO_2$ concentrations. Consequently, SCM and $CV_{30min}$ could be applied for an efficient monitoring tool to detect $CO_2$ release through the ground surface. Also, this study provides ideas for establishing action steps after leakage detection.
When an earth pressure balance (EPB) shield machine bores a tunnel in gravelly sand stratum, the excavated natural soil is normally transformed using foam and water to reduce cutter wear and the risk of direct muck squeezing out of the screw conveyor (i.e., muck spewing). Understanding the undrained shear behavior of conditioned soils under pressure is a potential perspective for optimizing the earth pressure balance shield tunnelling strategies. Owing to the unconventional properties of conditioned soil, a pressurized vane shear apparatus was utilized to investigate the undrained shear behavior of foam-conditioned gravelly sands under normal pressure. The results showed that the shear stress-displacement curves exhibited strain-softening behavior only when the initial void ratio (e0) of the foam-conditioned sand was less than the maximum void ratio (emax) of the unconditioned sand. The peak and residual strength increased with an increase in normal pressure and a decrease in foam injection ratio. A unique relation between the void ratio and the shear strength in the residual stage was observed in the e-ln(τ) space. When e0 was greater than emax, the fluid-like specimens had quite low strengths. Besides, the stick-slip behavior, characterized by the variation coefficient of measured shear stress in the residual stage, was more evident under lower pressure but it appeared to be independent of the foam injection. A comparison between the results of pressurized vane shear tests and those of slump tests indicated that the slump test has its limitations to characterize the chamber muck fluidity and build the optimal conditioning parameters.

In this study, estimation methodology for the pile of ultimation lateral resistance, pu, and ultimate lateral capacity, Pu, is based on the CPT cone resistance $q_c$. Preexistent methodologies for ultimate lateral resistance and ultimate lateral capacity have been generally represented with relative density, vertical effective stresses, and various $K_0$ values which are important for analyzing sandy soil. These methodologies, however, did not consider the horizontal effective stress and the effects of construction site conditions. Therefore, CPT-based methodology for the estimation of the ultimate lateral pile load capacity Hu was proposed. Calibration chamber test results were analyzed and compared with calculated results. The proposed estimation methodology for the pile of $p_u$ can be effectively utilized as alternative to preexistent methods.
In this study, the stability of group piles installed in deep sea to the seaquake was studied by performing the calibration chamber model tests for open-ended pipe piles, grouted piles under soil plug and close-ended piles installed in the simulated deep sea. For each case (a single pile, 2-pile and 4-pile groups), series of seaquake tests were performed. While, during the simulated seaquake, the compressive capacity of the single open-ended pile depended on pile penetration depth(=7m), were found to be stable. But, a single grouted pile with penetration depth of 13m kept "mobility" state, the one with penetration depth of 20m was stable and grouted pile groups with penetration depth of 7m were stable regardless of pile penetration depth. By grouting soil plug of open-ended piles and soil under the pile toe of open-ended pipe piles installed in the deep sea, failure of soil plugging was prevented. Thus, close-ended piles were more stable than open-ended pile against the seaquake motionake motion.
