In the digital era, news consumption is not confined in geological boundaries. Technological advances bring the instant dissemination of news into life and allow news audience to consume events that occur far away almost in real time. The transmission has blurred the boundary between traditional media and new media, and the one between physical and virtual world. That is, what if a journalist applies news framing to the news translation process? This paper aims to investigate the gap between the ST and the TT created when the source news texts undergo a translation process. To achieve this aim, the appraisal theory developed by White (2003) is employed to identify a difference between the ST and the TT. Furthermore, we have attempted to identify differences between soft news stories and hard news stories while the STs from both news stories are translated into the TTs. Two time-sensitive events, Hugh Grant's marriage and a U.S. and North Korea summit, were selected. The former (a soft news story) is extracted from the Telegraph and the latter (a hard news story) is from the Washington post. As a result, it was found that such strategies as attitude, engagement, and judgment were used when the source news texts from the hard news story are translated into the target news texts. Under the appraisal theory, the strategies involve evaluative language which refers to positive or negative language that judges the worth of entities. In general, it is said that a journalist frames the SS (especially from the hard news story) to convey his ideology to news consumers. Hypothetically, we assume that a similar framing process takes place in deriving the TT from the SS of the hard news story. Thus, we could conclude that the TT from the hard news story differs from the TT from the soft news story and that the difference can be explained within the framework of White's appraisal theory.

The study aims to reveal the differences in the factors influencing portal news and news site application usages on smartphones in regard to political discussion networks, news use across multiple media platforms and news genre consumption. The results demonstrate that those factors affected both types of application usages in a different manner when controlling for demographics. The more participants conversed politics with homogeneous networks, the more they used portal news on smartphones. Conversely, the more political discussion with heterogeneous networks, the more they used news site application on smartphones. The more frequently Internet and mobile phone were employed for news source and the more soft news genre was consumed, the more the portal news application was used. However, the more frequently traditional and social media were employed for news source and the more hard news consumed, the more news site application was used. The findings imply that portal news application users may increase their likelihood of soft news consumption using Internet and mobile phones for political discussion with close social relations, while news site application users may increase their likelihood of hard news consumption using traditional and social media for political discussion with distant social relations.

21세기 들어 아시아가 빠르게 발전하고 있다. 한국과 아시아 국가 사이에 인적, 물적 교류도 크게 늘고, 한국이 다문화사회로 접어들면서 아시아에 대한 우리 국민들의 올바른 이해가 더욱 중요해졌다. 이를 위해서는 한국신문의 아시아에 대한 보도양상이 중요하다는 문제의식에서 조선일보, 동아일보, 한겨레신문, 경향신문 등 4개 신문이 2011년에 보도한 1786개의 국제뉴스 내용을 분석해서 아시아와 서구에 대한 보도양상의 차이와 이유를 알아봤다. 보도량에서는 아시아(45.7%)보다 서구(54.3%)뉴스가 많았다. 아시아 뉴스에서는 부정적인 뉴스가 가장 많았으나, 서구 뉴스에서는 부정적인 뉴스가 가장 적고 중립적 또는 긍정적인 뉴스가 가장 많아 한국신문은 아시아보다 서구에 대해 긍정적인 보도태도를 보였다. 국제뉴스를 도덕 정의, 정치, 경제 과학, 사회, 외교 국방, 인간적 흥미, 인물 등 7개의 주제로 분류했다. 주제별 보도량을 보면 아시아에 대해서는 외교 국방, 도덕 정의, 정치 등 경성기사를 많이 보도했다. 서구에 대해서는 경성기사 이외에 인간적 흥미, 인물 등 연성기사도 많이 보도해 아시아보다는 다양한 뉴스를 전달했다. 경성기사에서는 부정적인 태도가 가장 많았고, 연성기사에서는 긍정 또는 중립적인 태도가 가장 많았다. 그 결과 한국신문의 국제뉴스는 아시아에 대해 부정적이고, 서구에 대해 긍정적인 보도태도를 나타내게 됐다. 미디어, 정부, 민간조직, 개인, 자료 등 5개의 핵심 정보원 가운데 미디어만이 서구와 아시아에 대한 보도태도의 차이에 영향을 주고 있었다. 아시아 미디어 정보원은 서구 미디어보다 아시아에 대해 긍정적인 보도를 많이 했다. 서구 미디어 정보원은 아시아에 대해서는 부정적, 서구에 대해서는 중립적인 보도를 많이 했다. 그런데 한국신문은 동아시아를 제외한 지역의 뉴스에서는 전적으로 서구미디어를 핵심 정보원으로 활용했다. 이에 따라 한국신문의 국제뉴스는 서구중심적이 되고, 아시아에 더 부정적인 보도를 많이 하게 되었다. 한국신문의 서구와 아시아에 대한 보도양상은 많이 보도한 주제와 외국 미디어 정보원 의존 형태에 따라 달라졌다. 한국신문은 특파원 등을 활용한 직접 취재, 인터넷을 이용한 아시아 매체활용 확대 등으로 아시아에 대해 다양한 뉴스를 전달해야 한다는 개선방안을 제시했다.

This study examines mobile news engagement-conceptualized as news exposure and participation-in the context of South Asia which has experienced tremendous growth in mobile-Internet users without receiving much attention from communication scholars. Along with demographic characteristics, this research incorporates motivational factors (grounded on uses and gratifications-U&G-approach) and news type preferences to explore their roles in mobile news engagement among urban citizens in Bangladesh. Results of a self-administered survey (N = 504) revealed that participants' mobile news engagement partially varied depending on their demographic differences, particularly gender, age, and education. Our study also unveiled that individuals' motivation for sharing information seemed to be a strong predictor of mobile news exposure and participation. In addition, Bangladeshi respondents were more likely to be interested in the hard news in terms of expressing views on news comments and sharing news via mobile platform. Conversely, preference for soft type news had a significant influence on news exposure through mobile browsing. This study provides insights into the understanding of global phenomena of mobile news engagement by unpacking the case of Bangladesh where mobile news usage seems to be an evolving state.

인터넷 이용자들이 포털을 활용해 뉴스 콘텐츠를 소비하는 경우가 늘어나면서 포털이 뉴스의 연성화를 촉진해 여론형성에 문제가 있다는 비판을 받고 있다. 이러한 비판에 대응하기 위해 일부 포털은 기존의 뉴스배치모델과 달리 언론사로 직접 연결되는 뉴스캐스트 서비스를 실시하고 있다. 본 연구는 뉴스 배치모델과 뉴스캐스트 모델이 뉴스의 연성화와 의제설정에 차이를 보일 수 있는지 포털들 간의 비교를 통해 그 차이를 규명하고자 시도하고 있다. 구체적으로 '네이버', '다음', '네이트'의 3대 포털을 대상으로 특정 기간 동안 서비스되는 뉴스를 내용분석(Content Analysis)하였다. 이를 통해 포털의 뉴스 공급 모델이 가지는 특성과 연성화 정도를 평가하고 그 함의를 도출하고 있다. 연구결과 뉴스캐스트 모델의 실시 이후에도 포털의 연성화와 선정성은 크게 개선되지 못하고 있음이 밝혀졌다. 따라서 포털이 단순히 기사를 재매개하는 관점에서 벗어나 건전하고 질 좋은 뉴스 콘텐츠를 유통하는 방향으로 포털 저널리즘이 재정비되어야 할 것이다.

모바일 뉴스 소비가 증가하고 있지만 지상파 방송사 뉴스 앱의 이용률은 낮다. 이 연구는 지상파 방송사 뉴스 앱의 개선에 필요한 요소를 찾기 위해 20대 이용자를 대상으로 사용성 평가를 수행했다. 모바일 뉴스 앱에서 제공되는 모바일 뉴스 콘텐츠 형식(기존 뉴스 형식, 재가공 형식, 뉴미디어 전용 형식)별로 효율성, 유효성, 만족도를 통해 문제점을 평가했고, 뉴스 주제(경성 뉴스, 연성 뉴스)와 방송사(MBC, SBS)의 차이를 포함해 분석했다. 실험 결과 모바일 뉴스 콘텐츠 형식에 따른 사용성에서는 유사한 문제점이 공통적으로 발견되었고 모바일 뉴스 콘텐츠 형식의 차이는 차별화된 사용성을 제공하지 않는 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 뉴스 주제 차원에서는 경성 뉴스와 연성 뉴스 여부에 따라 각 항목별로 다른 사용성이 드러났다. 이에 따라 이 연구는 뉴스 제작자들이 모바일 뉴스 콘텐츠를 제작할 때 뉴스 콘텐츠 형식보다는 내용 차원의 개선을 할 필요가 있다는 실무적인 함의를 제공한다.

현재 온라인 뉴스 서비스는 선정적인 연성뉴스 중심으로 제공된다. 이에 따라 저널리즘 가치를 구현한 뉴스 서비스의 필요성이 대두되고 있다. 정보원과 공동 인용 여부에 따라 기사를 클러스터링하고 가중치를 부여해 사실성, 다양성, 심층성, 비판성 등 주요 저널리즘 가치를 구현한 알고리즘은 뉴스정보원연결망분석(news source network analysis)으로 제안된 바 있다. 본 연구는 이를 사용자 친화적으로 시각화한 서비스인 뉴스소스를 제안한다. 뉴스소스는 시간과 정보원에 따라 뉴스를 막대그래프 형식으로 어떤 토픽에 대해 분야별, 소속별로 얼마만큼의 중요도에 따라 논의되는지를 대조적으로 보여준다. 본 연구에서는 뉴스 아카이브인 카인즈의 기사를 활용해 뉴스소스의 베타 버전을 구현했다. Media manipulation of breaking news through article selection, ranking and tweaking of social media data and comment streams is a growing concern for society. We argue that the combination of human and machine curation on media portals marks a new period for news media and journalism. Although intermediary platforms routinely claim that they are merely the neutral technological platform which facilitates news and information flows, rejecting any criticisms that they are operating as de facto media organisations; instead, we argue for an alternative, more active interpretation of their roles. In this article we provide a contemporary account of the South Korean ('Korean') online news media ecology as an exemplar of how contemporary media technologies, and in particular portals and algorithmic recommender systems, perform a powerful role in shaping the kind of news and information that citizens access. By highlighting the key stakeholders and their positions within the production, publication and distribution of news media, we argue that the overall impact of the major portal platforms of Naver and Kakao is far more consequential than simply providing an entertaining media diet for consumers. These portals are central in designing how and which news is sourced, produced and then accessed by Korean citizens. From a regulatory perspective the provision of news on the portals can be a somewhat ambiguous and moving target, subject to soft and harder regulatory measures. While we investigate a specific case study of the South Korean experience, we also trace out connections with the larger global media ecology. We have relied on policy documents, stakeholder interviews and portal user 'walk throughs' to understand the changing role of news and its surfacing on a distinctive breed of media platforms.

본 연구의 목적은 뉴스를 보도하는데 있어 유머가 앵커에 대한 신뢰성과 시청자 태도에 미치는 영향을 분석하고, 뉴스타입에 따른 조절효과를 검증하고자 하는 것이다. 이를 위해 뉴스 동영상을 시청한 222명의 대학생을 대상으로 유머의 유무에 따른 앵커에 대한 신뢰도와 앵커에 대한 시청자 태도에 대해 미치는 영향을 분석하였으며, 뉴스타입의 조절효과도 검증해 보았다. 분석결과 유머가 앵커 신뢰도에 부정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났으나 앵커에 대한 시청자 태도에는 유의한 차이를 보이지 않았다. 그리고 뉴스 타입의 조절효과는 연성뉴스의 경우에는 유머 사용 여부에 따른 차이가 거의 없는 것으로 분석되었지만 경성 뉴스에서는 유머를 사용하는 경우 앵커 태도가 현저하게 좋아지는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구의 결론에는 연구결과의 요약과 시사점, 연구의 한계점 그리고 향후 연구에 대한 제언을 하였다.

Proportional.Integral.Derivative control schemes continue to provide the simplest and effective solutions to most of the control engineering applications today. However PID controller is poorly tuned in practice with most of the tuning done manually which is difficult and time consuming. This research comes up with a soft computing approach involving Genetic Algorithm, Evolutionary Programming, and Particle Swarm Optimization and Ant colony optimization. The proposed algorithm is used to tune the PID parameters and its performance has been compared with the conventional methods like Ziegler Nichols and Lambda method. The results obtained reflect that use of heuristic algorithm based controller improves the performance of process in terms of time domain specifications, set point tracking, and regulatory changes and also provides an optimum stability. This research addresses comparison of tuning of the PID controller using soft computing techniques on Machine Direction of basics weight control in pulp and paper industry. Compared to other conventional PID tuning methods, the result shows that better performance can be achieved with the soft computing based tuning method. The ability of the designed controller, in terms of tracking set point, is also compared and simulation results are shown.
