The use of social media in government has expanded steadily around the world on the basis of Web 2.0 technology. The government uses social media as a tool for enhancing transparency, participation, collaboration, and saving costs. However, the use of social media in the public sector has not only been positive. It has also been described as a double-edged sword. Most local governments in South Korea use social media for a variety of reasons but there has not been enough practical study of the effectiveness of social media use in the public sector. Local governments generally have positive views of their social media use but the real application of social media is not consistent in each local government. This study tried to determine the reality of social media use in local government and what factors influenced its use. The research analyzed the data from a survey conducted by the Korea Local Information Research & Development Institute (KLID) in 2015 and data from Facebook in each local government. The results show that most local governments were using Facebook for promotional purposes and local government officials similarly recognized that they were using Facebook well. However, local governments showed great differences in their use and practical effect. Meanwhile, the study found that population, financial independence, level of government, the entity operating social media, the median age, and whether social media are used for interaction or to gather opinions were the most influential factors that make a difference in utilization in local government.

Climate change is a constant threat to human life, and it is important to understand the public perception of this issue. Previous studies examining climate change have been based on limited survey data. In this study, the authors used big data such as news articles and social media data, within which the authors selected specific keywords related to climate change. Using these natural language data, topic modeling was performed for discourse analysis regarding climate change based on various topics. In addition, before applying topic modeling, sentiment analysis was adjusted to discover the differences between discourses on climate change. Through this approach, discourses of positive and negative tendencies were classified. As a result, it was possible to identify the tendency of each document by extracting key words for the classified discourse. This study aims to prove that topic modeling is a useful methodology for exploring discourse on platforms with big data. Moreover, the reliability of the study was increased by performing topic modeling in consideration of objective indicators (i.e., coherence score, perplexity). Theoretically, based on the social amplification of risk framework (SARF), this study demonstrates that the diffusion of the agenda of climate change in public news media leads to personal anxiety and fear on social media.
This study examined the overall relationship between information privacy concern, need for uniqueness (NFU), and disclosure behavior to explain the personal factors that drive data-sharing on Facebook. The results of an online survey conducted with 222 Facebook users show that among diverse data that social media users disclose online, four distinct factors are identified: basic personal data, private data, personal opinions, and personal photos. In general, there is a negative relationship between privacy concern and a positive relationship between the NFU and the willingness to self-disclose information. Overall, the NFU was a better predictor of willingness to disclose information than privacy concern, gender, or age. While privacy concern has been identified as an influential factor when users evaluate social networking sites, the findings of this study contribute to the literature by demonstrating that an individual's need to manifest individualization on social media overrides privacy concerns.

Social media has become a popular source of information around the world. Previous studies explored different trends of social media news consumption. However, no studies have focused on Bangladesh to date, where social media penetration is very high in recent years. To fill this gap, this research aimed to understand its popularity trends during the period. For that reason, this work analyzes 97.67 million page likes and 3.48 billion interaction data collected from nine Bangladeshi news media's Facebook pages between December 2016 to November 2020. The analysis shows that the growth rates of page likes and interaction rates declined during this period. It suggests that the media's Facebook pages are gradually losing their popularity among Facebook users, which may have two more interpretations: Facebook's aggregate appeal as a news source is decreasing to users, or Bangladeshi media's appeal is eroding to Facebook users. These findings challenge the previous results, i.e., Facebook's demand as a news source is increasing with time. We offer four explanations of the decreased popularity of Facebook's news: information overload, exposure to incidental news, users' selective exposure and different aims of using Facebook, and conflict between media agendas and users' interests. Some theoretical and practical significance of the results has been discussed as well.

Although the development of digital technology and network has brought great convenience in modern lives, amongst the aggravated complexity in the contemporary society, modern minds who have failed to create genuine relationships undergo a sense of alienation and solitude that may appear as a type of social pathology called cellular-phone addiction. Also, while the emergence of the information age seemingly brings about benefits including diverse acquisition regarding knowledge and broader communication, underneath exists side effects involving leakage of private information. Especially, being excessively addicted to relationship network may induce one to become insensitive towards leakage of private information without recognizing, and thereby instigating yet another social problem. Media art is very practical in terms of suggesting a critical perspective concerning social phenomena and elevating them into a work of art by rendering them artistically. Particularly, when social problems of the modern days are expressed through digital technology, media art provides the audience with a foundation that will enable them to sympathize without hostility. This dissertation calls attention to the contemporary problems regarding cellular-phone addiction and possible hazards of information leakage based on media art, while at the same time proposing the production process of a media art work that attempts to raise awareness and sympathy on such social issues.
