Transmission of continuous media streams has been a challenging problem of multimedia service. Lots of works have been done trying to figure out the best solution for this problem, and some works presented the optimal solution for transmitting the stored video using smoothing schemes applied to each individual stream. But those smoothing schemes considered only one stream, not the whole streams being serviced, to apply themselves, which could only achieve local optimum not the global optimum. Most of all, they did not exploit statistical multiplexing gain that can be obtained before smoothing. In this paper, we propose a new smoothing scheme that deals with not an individual stream but the whole streams being serviced simultaneously to achieve the optimal network bandwidth utilization and maximize the number of streams that can be serviced simultaneously. We formally proved that the proposed scheme not only provides deterministic QoS for each client but also maximizes number of clients that can be serviced simultaneously and hence achieves maximum utilization of transmission bandwidth.
The burst is to require abruptly high transmission rate in case of transmitting pre-stored variable bit rate video data, and it causes to be inefficient use of network resource, resource reservation. To avoid these problems, smoothing is transmission plan where variable rate video data is converted to a constant bit rate stream. These smoothing algorithms include CBA, MCBA, MVBA and others. To evaluate amount of burst reduction in the existing CBA, MCBA, MVBA algorithm, this paper compares the burst-related-factors of transmission plan in smoothing algorithms with original video sources which were stored Variable Bit Rate. There are maximum frame bytes, maximum GOP bytes, transmission rate variability per frame, transmission rate variability per GOP in burst-related evaluation factors. Experimental result shows burst-related factors of smoothing algorithms which were used for experiment lower than that of pre-stored video data, except special case.

In this paper we propose a robust version of varying coefficient models, which is based on the regularized regression with L1 regularization. We use the iteratively reweighted least squares procedure to solve L1 regularized objective function of varying coefficient model in locally weighted regression form. It provides the efficient computation of coefficient function estimates and the variable selection for given value of smoothing variable. We present the generalized cross validation function and Akaike information type criterion for the model selection. Applications of the proposed model are illustrated through the artificial examples and the real example of predicting the effect of the input variables and the smoothing variable on the output.
The transmission of prerecorded and compressed video data without degradation of picture quality requires video servers to cope with large fluctuations in bandwidth requirement. Bandwidth smoothing techniques can reduce the burst of a variable-bit rate stream by prefetching data at a series of fixed rates and simplifying the allocation of resources in the video servers and the network. In this paper, the proposed smoothing algorithm results in the optimal transmission plans for (1) the smallest bandwidth requirements, (2) the minimum number of changes in transmission rate, and (3) the minimum amount of the server process overhead. The advantages of the proposed smoothing algorithm have been verified through the comparison with the existing smoothing algorithms in diverse environments.

For a power grid that has a high wind penetration level, when wind speeds are continuously fluctuating, the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) operation of a variable-speed wind turbine (VSWT) causes the significant output power fluctuation of a VSWT, thereby significantly fluctuating the system frequency. In this paper, an improved power-smoothing scheme of a VSWT is presented that significantly mitigates the frequency fluctuation caused by varying wind speeds. The proposed scheme employs an additional control loop based on the frequency deviation that operates in combination with the MPPT control loop. To improve the power-smoothing capability of a VSWT in the over-frequency section (OFS), the control gain of the additional loop, which is set to be inversely proportional to the rotor speed, is proposed. In contrast, the control gain in the under-frequency section is set to be proportional to the rotor speed to improve the power-smoothing capability while avoiding over-deceleration of the rotor speed of a VSWT. The proposed scheme significantly improves the performance of the power-smoothing capability in the OFS, thereby smoothing the frequency fluctuation. The results clearly demonstrate that the proposed scheme significantly mitigates the frequency fluctuation by employing the different control gain for the OFS under various wind penetration scenarios.
As multimedia communication services have been widely spreading, the amount of video traffic is rapidly increasing in B-ISDN environment based on the ATM technology. The image quality of MPEG services is very sensitive to the cell losses in ATM network, since each cell contains information needed at decoding process. Since the number of cells in each frame of MPEG is variable, this video smoothing technology need to prepare a buffer for no overflow or underflow at the transmission, requires that some number of cells be taken to the buffer in client before the playback of video. To ensure the high quality image of video, the video smoothing is scheduled by a Group of Picture unit. In this paper, we then apply the theory to reds nightmare encoded in MPEG, and find minimum smoothing buffer size, initial buffer size. It can be used to study the smoothing of stored video.
This study investigates whether listed companies change accounting methods primarily to smooth reported earnings and income taxes, and how the informations of accounting changes affect stock prices. The information of accounting changes includes tax savings, income smoothing, and tax smoothing. The results show that accounting changes are used as an income or tax smoothing instrument(device) in the listed companies which changed their accounting methods from 1991 to 1996. Also, those have a tendency to smooth income and tax simultaneously by accounting changes. Tax savings, income smoothing, and tax smoothing variables by accounting changes are irrelevant to stock prices. Income smoothing variable has a positive association with stock returns in the periods that the abnormal returns cumulated over four months. But tax smoothing variable has a negative association with stock returns in the same periods. More studies on the firms' accounting changes are needed to get a definitive conclusion.

Current credit evaluation models based on financial data make use of smoothing estimated default ratios which are transformed from each financial variable. In this work, some problems of the credit evaluation models developed by financial experts are discussed and we propose improved credit evaluation models based on the stepwise variable selection method and Box-Cox transformed data whose distribution is much skewed to the right. After comparing goodness-of-fit tests of these models, the validation of the credit evaluation models using statistical methods such as the stepwise variable selection method and Box-Cox transformation function is explained.

A structured model with both single-index and varying coefficients is a powerful tool in modeling high dimensional data. It has been widely used because the single-index can overcome the curse of dimensionality and varying coefficients can allow nonlinear interaction effects in the model. For high dimensional index vectors, variable selection becomes an important question in the model building process. In this paper, we propose an efficient estimation and a variable selection method based on a smoothing spline approach in a partially linear single-index-coefficient regression model. We also propose an efficient algorithm for simultaneously estimating the coefficient functions in a data-adaptive lower-dimensional approximation space and selecting significant variables in the index with the adaptive LASSO penalty. The empirical performance of the proposed method is illustrated with simulated and real data examples.

In a power grid that has a high penetration of wind power, the highly-fluctuating output power of wind turbine generators (WTGs) adversely impacts the power quality in terms of the system frequency. This paper proposes a power smoothing scheme of a variable-speed WTG that can smooth its fluctuating output power caused by varying wind speeds, thereby improving system frequency regulation. To achieve this, an additional loop relying on the frequency deviation that operates in association with the maximum power point tracking control loop, is proposed; its control gain is modified with the rotor speed. For a low rotor speed, to ensure the stable operation of a WTG, the gain is set to be proportional to the square of the rotor speed. For a high rotor speed, to improve the power smoothing capability, the control gain is set to be proportional to the cube of the rotor speed. The performance of the proposed scheme is investigated under varying wind speeds for the IEEE 14-bus system using an EMTP-RV simulator. The simulation results indicate that the proposed scheme can mitigate the output power fluctuation of WTGs caused by varying wind speeds by adjusting the control gain depending on the rotor speed, thereby supporting system frequency regulation.
