  • The conventional fire detection devices are operated after a processed fire phase, which are sensing only a high density of somke level or high temperature heat. They are not so precision to detect a fire in the early phase to protect the facility form the fire. We need to develope a new high precision smoke detection system to keep expensive industrial facilities most reliably form fire. A new optical precision smoke detection system was developed. It monitors very low level density of smoke particles in the air. It is operated continously through many years without a stop or any malfunction. The developed precision smoke detection system will be installed in important industrial facilities, such as power plants, underground common tunnel, main control rooms, computer rooms etc.

  • Detection performance of fire detection in the outdoor depends on weather conditions, the shadow by the movement of the sun, or illumination changes. In this paper, a smoke detection in conjunction with a robust background estimate algorithm to environment change in the outdoor in daytime is proposed. Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) is applied as background estimation, and also, statistical characteristics of smoke is applied to detect the smoke for separated candidate region. Through the experiments with input videos obtained from a various weather conditions, the proposed algorithms were useful to detect smoke in the outdoor.

  • The most important things for a forest fire detection system are the exact extraction of the smoke from image and being able to clearly distinguish the smoke from those with similar qualities, such as clouds and fog. This research presents an intelligent forest fire detection algorithm via image processing by using the Gaussian Mixture model (GMM), which can be applied to detect smoke at the earliest time possible in a forest. GMMs are usually addressed by making the model adaptive so that its parameters can track changing illuminations and by making the model more complex so that it can represent multimodal backgrounds more accurately for smoke plume segmentation in the forest. Also, in this paper, we suggest a way to classify the smoke plumes via a feature extraction using HSL(Hue, Saturation and Lightness or Luminanace) color space analysis.

  • The existing methods for detection of fire smoke in a video easily lead to misjudgment of cloud, fog and moving distractors, such as a moving person, a moving vehicle and other non-smoke moving objects. Therefore, an algorithm for detection of fire smoke in a video based on wavelet energy slope fitting is proposed in this paper. The change in wavelet energy of the moving target foreground is used as the basis, and a time window of 40 continuous frames is set to fit the wavelet energy slope of the suspected area in every 20 frames, thus establishing a wavelet-energy-based smoke judgment criterion. The experimental data show that the algorithm described in this paper not only can detect smoke more quickly and more accurately, but also can effectively avoid the distraction of cloud, fog and moving object and prevent false alarm.

  • Early fire detection is very important to avoid loss of lives and material damage. The conventional smoke detector sensors have difficulties in detecting smoke in large outdoor areas. The video-based smoke detection can overcome these drawbacks. This paper proposes a new smoke detection method in video sequences. It uses the ratio of variation rate of subband energy in the wavelet transform domain. In order to reduce the false alarm, candidate smoke blocks are detected by using motion, decrease of chromaticity and the average intensity of block in the YUV color space. Finally, it decides whether the candidate smoke blocks are smokes or not by using their temporal changes of subband energies in the wavelet transform domain. Experimental results show that the proposed method noticeably increases the accuracy of smoke detection and reduces false alarm compared with the conventional smoke detection methods using wavelets.

  • Automatic smoke detection systems using a surveillance camera requires a reliable smoke detection method. When an image sequence is captured from smoke spreading over in the air, not only has each smoke image frame a special texture, called static texture, but the difference between two smoke image frames also has a peculiar texture, called dynamic texture. Even though an object has a static texture similar to that of the smoke, its dynamic texture cannot be similar to that of the smoke if its movement differs from the diffraction action of the smoke. This paper presents a reliable smoke detection method using these two textures. The proposed method first detects change regions using accumulated frame difference, and then picks out smoke regions using Haralick features extracted from two textures.

  • In this article, a video based fire detection framework for CCTV surveillancesystems is presented. Two novel features and a novel image type with their corresponding algorithmsareproposed for this purpose. One is for the slow-smoke detection and another one is for fast-smoke/flame detection. The basic idea is slow-smoke has a highly varying chrominance/luminance texture in long periods and fast-smoke/flame has a highly varying texture waiting at the same location for long consecutive periods. Experiments with a large number of smoke/flame and non-smoke/flame video sequences outputs promising results in terms of algorithmic accuracy and speed.

  • Smoke detection plays an important role for the early detection of fire. In this paper, we suggest a newly developed method that generated LBPV(Local Binary Pattern Variance)s as special feature vectors from RGB contrast images can be applied to detect smoke using SVM(Support Vector Machine). The proposed method rearranges mean value of the block from each R, G, B channel and its intensity of the mean value. Additionally, it generates RGB contrast image which indicates each RGB channel’s contrast via smoke’s achromatic color. Uniform LBPV, Rotation-Invariance LBPV, Rotation-Invariance Uniform LBPV are applied to RGB Contrast images so that it could generate feature vector from the form of LBP. It helps to distinguish between smoke and non smoke area through SVM. Experimental results show that true positive detection rate is similar but false positive detection rate has been improved, although the proposed method reduced numbers of feature vector in half comparing with the existing method with LBP and LBPV.

  • From the beginning of aviation history, in-flight smoke/fire events have been a serious issue. As aircraft are getting larger and are becoming more auto-piloted and aircraft systems are getting more complex, it is an increasing risk of in-flight smoke/fire accidents accompanied with fire events. Therefore, we review the statistics of fire/smoke accidents in order to enhance an understanding for risk of in-flight smoke events, and present the certification requirements for smoke per KAS Part 25. In addition, we provide acceptable methods of complying with related requirements, such as smoke detection test, smoke penetration test and smoke evacuation test.
