카메라 트래핑을 이용한 육상포유류 모니터링 효율성 평가 (Monitoring Efficiency Evaluation of Camera Trapping in Terrestrial Mammals)

  • The aim of this study was to evaluate the monitoring efficiency of camera trapping in wild animals and to determine ways to increase its utilization. Nineteen sensor cameras were installed in Sobaeksan National Park from October 2012 to September 2013. During the study period, a total of 1045 terrestrial mammal photos were secured and 15 species habitats were identified. Shooting frequency was higher for medium and large mammals, especially full images of carnivores accounted for approximately 83%. A comparison of track surveys revealed that camera trapping was highly efficient and helped in capturing real image of species. The supply of lure and bait stimulates the sense of smell in carnivores, which further enhances the capturing of images by camera trapping. The results of this study provide data on the ecological characteristics of mammals, which can aid in determining habitat use by these animals, and thereby facilitate prevention of crop damage by wildlife.

Micronutrients as Supportive Care for Gastrointestinal Cancer Patients; Benefits and Concerns

  • Cancer is the first leading cause of death in Korea and the second leading cause of death in the USA. There is extensive research into prevention of cancer and the support of oncology patients with diet or dietary supplements. In vitro and in vivo animal studies have indicated that antioxidants, including beta-carotene, alpha-tocopherol, and ascorbic acid, can yield anti-cancer effects in addition to providing protection against oxidative damage. Although many observational studies have shown that consuming fruits and vegetables can reduce the risk of some cancers, the results of several large-scale human intervention trials testing the benefits of a single or combined higher-dose of individual micronutrients have been inconsistent. Cancer can cause profound metabolic and physiological changes which may affect patients' nutrient requirements. Although the optimal route of nutrient delivery is through diet, cancer patients often suffer symptoms that disrupt their food intake, including anorexia, premature satiety, altered taste and smell, and changes in bowel mobility. In particular, micronutrient deficits can slow postoperative healing, contribute to depression symptoms, and decrease immune competence. Cancer patients are generally motivated to take dietary supplements to improve responses to treatment and quality of life. The Physician's Health Study II (PHS II) randomized controlled trial reported recently that daily multivitamin supplementation significantly, albeit modestly, reduced the risk of total cancer. Although evidence of multivitamin use benefits is limited in cancer patients, taking dietary supplements with constituents in the range of the recommended daily allowance according to the Dietary Reference Intake (DRI) recommendation is generally considered to be safe.

  • 노인 인구의 급격한 증가와 더불어 노인성질환도 증가함에 따라 일상적인 생활을 하지 못하는 노인에 대한 요양과 치료는 노인장기요양보험제도의 실시로 어느 정도 효과를 거두고 있지만 치매 예방을 통한 유병률 감소는 사회적 비용을 감소시킬 수 있음에도 불구하고 그 중요성이 간과되고 있다. 특히 요양시설이나 복지기관 현장에서는 경증 치매 및 치매 예방에 대한 프로그램은 전무하거나 일시적이고 단편적인 기법만을 활용하고 있는 실정이다. 이에 본 논문에서는 치매에 관심이 있는 노인을 대상으로 복지 전문가가 현장에서 비교적 손쉽게 적용할 수 있는 손운동법(촉각), 회상요법(시각), 치료레크리에이션(미각), 음악요법(청각), 원예치료(후각) 등 오감을 자극하는 기법들을 적절히 조화시켜 체계적으로 적용할 수 있는 치매 예방 프로그램을 제안한다.

Himalayan Medicinal Resources: Present and Future. A Case Study: Andidiabetic Activity of Shilajit

  • A major portion of drugs used in Ayurvedic system of medicine which has been practiced since the early human civilization in Indian subcontinent were of plant origin. It should be noted that 70% of the population in this region depends on Ayurveda for their medical treatment and 60% of the drug resources are obtained from the Himalayan region. Therefore, Nepal becomes a potential source of plant drug resource since it occupies a major portion of the Himalaya. In the present paper, in general a current status of medicinal plant resources of Himalayan region especially Nepal will be discussed. In addition to this, a typical example of antidiabetic activity of Shilajit will be taken for the discussion. Shilajit is one of the crucial elements in several formulations including those of Rasayana, a therapy in Ayurveda, which has been practiced in the prevention of ageing and mental disorder. Although, Shilajit is widely used for the treatment of diabetes, no satisfactory scientific reports are available up to now. The crude Shilajit in the market is a dark brown or black rock-like substance collected from the Himalayan region with a strong smell of cow's stale urine. In our studies, Shilajit (collected in the central Himalayan region) prevented the diabetes in nonobese diabetic (NOD) mice model. Shilajit also prevented the diabetes in the rats against the action of multiple low-dose (10 mg/kg, i.v., 5 times) of streptozotocin. On the other hand, Shilajit did not show antioxidative activity. The preventive action of Shilajit on diabetes is mainly focused on the Thl and Th2 cell activities, since Th2 cells activity was found to be significantly upregulated. Shilajit, however, showed a mild action in controlling the blood sugar level in young, old, and mild diabetic rats, but not in the severe diabetic rats. It also stimulated the nitric oxide production in macrophages. Based on these evidences, the antidiabetic activities of Shilajit appear to be immunomodulative probably by protecting or strengthening insulin-producing b-cells in the pancreas. Further systematic research on constituents of Shilajit and its quality evaluation is necessary to enable the use of natural medicines in the treatment of diabetes.

실내.외 근무자의 황사 전.후 증상 및 예방행동에 대한 연구 (Symptoms and Behavior Change before and After the Asian Dust Events Among Indoor and Outdoor Workers)

  • We investigated the change of symptoms and preventive behaviors before and after the Asian Dust events among indoor workers (teachers) and outdoor workers (taxi drivers and bus drivers). On February 2004, we recruited 195 taxi drivers, 135 bus drivers and 93 school teachers. Symptoms and behaviors related the Asian Dust events during 1 week were questioned by self administrated questionnaires. We surveyed pre-event and post-event. The symptom were not changed in bus drivers during the events. In taxi drivers and teachers,'Bad or smoky smell on the air' and 'eye congestion' symptoms were increased during the events. The preventive behaviors were decreased or not changed in taxi drivers and bus drivers. In teachers,'close the window','diminishing the outdoor activities', 'diminishing the going out', 'wearing the sunglasses', 'washing the eyes after going out'. This results suggest that the outdoor worker's guideline during the Asian dust eventsneeds to be developed.

YOLO에 기반한 유해 야생동물 피해방지 및 퇴치 시스템 구현 (Implementation of Prevention and Eradication System for Harmful Wild Animals Based on YOLO)

  • 해마다 야생동물이 인간의 거주지에 출몰하는 횟수가 증가하여 재산 및 인명 피해가 증가하고 있다. 특히, 고속도로나 농가에 야생동물이 출몰하는 경우에 그 피해가 더 심하다. 이런 문제점을 해결하기 위해 고속도로에는 생태통로와 유도펜스를 설치하였다. 또한, 농가에서도 문제를 해결하기 위해 센서를 이용한 경적 퇴치기, 그물망 설치, 배설물로 퇴치 하는 등방법을 쓰고 있으나 고가의 비용이 들며 그 효과가 높지 않다. 본 논문에서는 AI 기반 영상분석 방법인 YOLO(You Only Live Once)를 이용하여 유해동물을 실시간 분석하여 오작동을 줄였고, 퇴치장치로 고휘도 LED와 초음파 주파수 스피커를 이용였다. 스피커는 동물들만 들을 수 있는 가청주파수를 출력하여 야생동물만 퇴치하도록 효율성을 높였다. 제안하는 시스템은, 경제적으로 설치할 수 있도록 범용 보드를 사용하여 설계되어 있으며 기존의 센서를 이용한 장치들보다 감지 성능이 높다.

Policy Effects of Secondhand Smoke Exposure in Public Places in the Republic of Korea: Evidence from PM2.5 levels and Air Nicotine Concentrations

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure inside selected public places to provide basic data for the development and promotion of smoke-free policies. Methods: Between March and May 2009, an SHS exposure survey was conducted. $PM_{2.5}$ levels and air nicotine concentrations were measured in hospitals (n=5), government buildings (4), restaurants (10) and entertainment venues (10) in Seoul, Republic of Korea, using a common protocol. Field researchers completed an observational questionnaire to document evidence of active smoking (the smell of cigarette smoke, presence of cigarette butts and witnessing people smoking) and administered a questionnaire regarding building characteristics and smoking policy. Results: Indoor $PM_{2.5}$ levels and air nicotine concentrations were relatively higher in monitoring sites where smoking is not prohibited by law. Entertainment venues had the highest values of $PM_{2.5}$(${\mu}g/m^3$) and air nicotine concentration(${\mu}g/m^3$), which were 7.6 and 67.9 fold higher than those of hospitals, respectively, where the values were the lowest. When evidence of active smoking was present, the mean $PM_{2.5}$ level was 104.9 ${\mu}g/m^3$, i.e., more than 4-fold the level determined by the World Health Organization for 24-hr exposure (25 ${\mu}g/m^3$). Mean indoor air nicotine concentration at monitoring sites with evidence of active smoking was 59-fold higher than at sites without this evidence (2.94 ${\mu}g/m^3$ vs. 0.05 ${\mu}g/m^3$). The results were similar at all specific monitoring sites except restaurants, where mean indoor $PM_{2.5}$ levels did not differ at sites with and without active smoking evidence and indoor air nicotine concentrations were higher in sites without evidence of smoking. Conclusion: Nicotine was detected in most of our monitoring sites, including those where smoking is prohibited by law, such as hospitals, demonstrating that enforcement and compliance with current smoke-free policies in Korea is not adequate to protect against SHS exposure.

농촌지역 주민들의 구취실태와 유발요인 (Halitosis and Related Factors among Rural Residents)

  • 본 연구는 농촌지역 주민들의 구취실태를 파악하고 구취에 관련된 요인을 알아봄으로써 구취예방 및 효율적인 구취제거 방안을 마련하는데 기초 자료를 제공하고자 일부 농촌지역의 주민 293명을 대상으로 2006년 1월 4일부터 1월 21일까지 면접설문조사(구강위생관리 행태, 구취관련 질병력, 구취실태), 구취측정, 구강검사, 치아우식활성검사(스나이더검사, 타액분비율검사, 타액완충능검사)를 실시한 결과 다음과 같은 결론을 얻었다. 1. 잇솔질 횟수는 1일 2회가 46.1 %로 가장 많았고, 여자가 남자보다 잇솔질 횟수가 많았다. 매일 혀솔질을 하는 군은 25.6%이었고, 보조 구강위생용품을 사용하는 군은 9.2 %이었다. 2. 평상시 구취를 자각하고 있는 사람은 62.5 %이었고, 구취를 가장 심하게 자각하는 시기는 기상 후가 72.7 %, 구취를 자각하는 부위는 잇몸에서 23.0 %, 구취의 유형으로는 구린 냄새가 37.2 %로 높게 나타났다. 3. 구취측정 결과 OG는 50 ppm미만이 54.3 %, $50{\sim}100ppm$ 범위에 41.6 %로 나타났고, $NH_3$$20{\sim}60ppm$ 범위에 52.6 %로 가장 높았다. 4. 구취관련 질병력별 OG는 치아우식증으로 인한 식편압입, 당뇨병과 구취에 대한 가족력군에서 $50{\sim}100ppm$ 범위에 유의하게 높았으며, $NH_3$는 호흡기계 질환군에서 유의한 차이가 있었다. 5 평상시 구취 자각정도별 OG는 '냄새가 나지 않는다'는 군과 '가끔 냄새가 난다'는 군에서 50 ppm 미만에 각각 55.9 %, 57.5 %로 나타났고, '본인이 느낄 정도로 항상 냄새가 난다'는 군과 '항상 심하게 냄새가 난다'는 군에서 $50{\sim}100ppm$ 범위에 각각 52.0 %, 63.6 %로 높게 나타났으며, $NH_3$는 모두 $20{\sim}60ppm$ 범위에 높게 나타났다. 6. 구강검사별 OG는 치수노출치와 식편압입이 많을수록, 설태지수가 높아질수록 $50{\sim}100ppm$ 범위에 OG값이 증가되었고, $NH_3$는 보철치가 많을수록, 설태지수가 높아질수록 유의하게 증가되었으며, 하악 국소의치군에서 60 ppm 이상으로 유의하게 증가되었다. 7. 스나이더검사는 고도활성이 43.0 %로 가장 높았고, 산 생성균의 활성이 높을수록 OG값이 증가되었다. 자극성 타액분비율 검사는 8.0 ml 이하에서 62.5 %로 가장 높았고, 타액분비율이 많을수록 OG값이 감소된 분포를 보였으며, 타액완충능검사는 0.1N 유산용액의 방울 수가 $6{\sim}10$ 방울에서 58.7 %로 가장 높았고, 타액완충능이 증가될수록 OG값이 냄새를 느끼지 못하는 50 ppm 미만에서 증가되었다. 8. 구강환경과 구취와의 상관관계에서 OG는 타액분비율, 보철치와 음의 상관관계를, 치수노출치, 충전치, 현존치, 설태량, 식편압입과 양의 상관관계를 보였으며, $NH_3$는 우식치와 음의 상관관계를, 보철치, 잇솔질 횟수와 양의 상관관계를 보였다. 9. 다중회귀분석 결과에서 OG에 영향을 주는 요인으로는 여자, 치수노출치, 보철치, 식편압입, 타액분비율, 설태지수, 스나이 더검사의 고도활성이 선정되었고 이들의 설명력은 45.1 %이었으며, NH3에 영향을 주는 요인으로는 여자, 치수노출치, 설태지수, 보철치가 선정되었으며 이들의 설명력은 6.6 %이었다. 이상의 결과를 볼 때, 조사대상 농촌지역 주민들의 구취실태는 구강환경 및 구취관련 요인, 치아우식활성검사의 스나이더 검사, 타액분비율검사와 밀접한 관련이 있음을 시사한다. 따라서 이들 주민들의 구취예방을 위해서는 식후에 올바른 잇솔질 방법 및 혀솔질과 더불어 보조 구강위생용품을 사용하여 식편압입과 설태제거를 해야 할 필요성이 강조된다. 구취의 원인과 그 성분은 매우 복잡하고 다양하므로 개인별 구취발생 요인을 정확하게 분석하기 위해서는 추후 계속적이고, 체계적인 연구가 필요하며, 보건(지)소의 치과위생사를 활용하여 지역사회 주민들에게 계속적인 구강보건교육 프로그램이 제공되어야 한다고 생각된다.

LPG 연료용 비황분계 부취제의 적용성 연구 (A Study on the Application of Sulfur-Free Odorant for LPG Fuel)

  • 일반적으로 황분계 부취제는 연료가스로 인한 가스중독, 발화, 폭발 등의 사고를 방지하고, 배출가스에 의해 연료 가스 누출의 즉각적으로 손쉽게 검출할 수 있도록 LPG, 그리고 도시가스와 같은 연료가스에 첨가 사용하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 기존의 황을 함유한 가스용 부취제를 대체하여 연료의 저황분화와 금속 부식성을 낮출 수 있는 LPG 연료용 비황분계 부취제 개발을 위하여 실험하였다. 비황분계 부취제는 황을 함유하지 않는 12개의 부취물질을 선정하였으며, 직접 관능법에 의한 취질과 취기 평가를 실험하였다. 최종 선정된 혼합 부취물질은 methyl isovalerate, methyl acrylate, 2-ethyl-3-methyl pyrazine이며, 이때 조성비는 50% : 40% : 10% 이다. 최종 비황분계 부취제(K-Petro S-Free)는 LPG 연료에 40 wt ppm 혼합하여 품질평가, 금속 부식성 평가 그리고 장기 안정성 평가를 실험하였다. 이 때 LPG 연료용 비황분계 부취제는 국내 LPG 연료의 품질기준을 모두 만족하였다. 또한 금속에 대한 부식성에는 영향이 없으며, 60일간의 장기 안정성 평가에서 LPG연료의 조성에 영향을 주지 않았다. 따라서 최종 선정된 비황분계 부취제(K-Petro S-Free)는 LPG 연료의 첨가제로서 가능성을 보여주고 있다.
