Cosmic Distances Probed Using The BAO Ring

  • The cosmic distance can be precisely determined using a 'standard ruler' imprinted by primordial baryon acoustic oscillation (hereafter BAO) in the early Universe. The BAO at the targeted epoch is observed by analyzing galaxy clustering in redshift space (hereafter RSD) of which theoretical formulation is not yet fully understood, and thus makes this methodology unsatisfactory. The BAO analysis through full RSD modeling is contaminated by the systematic uncertainty due to a non--linear smearing effect such as non-linear corrections and uncertainty caused by random viral velocity of galaxies. However, BAO can be probed independently of RSD contamination using the BAO peak positions located in the 2D anisotropic correlation function. A new methodology is presented to measure peak positions, to test whether it is also contaminated by the same systematics in RSD, and to provide the radial and transverse cosmic distances determined by the 2D BAO peak positions. We find that in our model independent anisotropic clustering analysis we can obtain about 2% and 5% constraints on $D_A$ and $H^{-1}$ respectively with current BOSS data which is competitive with other analysis.

The Extraction of Character from an English Name Card by Using Smearing Method and Contour Trucking Algorithm (스미어링 기법과 윤곽선 추적 알고리즘을 이용한 영문 명함 영상에서의 문자 추출)

  • 본 논문에서는 영문 명함 영상에서 개별 문자 추출 방법을 제안한다. 30개의 원본 명함 영상을 대상으로 스미어링 기법과 윤곽선 추적 알고리즘을 이용하여 영문 명함의 개별 문자들 추출하였다. 본 논문에서는 3$\times$3 마스크를 이용하여 가장 작은 값으로 3 배 축소하는 방법을 적용하여 스미어링하는 시간을 단축시키고 문자들간의 간격을 제거하여 윤곽선 추적 알고리즘을 이용하여 문자열 후보 영역을 추출하였다 그리고 추출된 후보 영역의 가로 및 세로의 비율과 면적을 이용하여 문자열과 비 문자열로 분리하고, 문자열 영역에서 4 방향 윤곽선 추적 알고리즘을 이용하여 개별문자를 추출하였다. 30개의 명함 영상을 실험한 결과, 309개의 문자열 중에서 280개가 추출되었고 개별 문자는 4504개중에서 4110개가 추출되었다

On the Relationship of Color Image Compression and Gamut: MPEG2

  • Image compression techniques such as JPEG and MPEG induce losses of image quality. These losses are usually investigated on the spatial distortions from reconstructed images. Representative specifications are blocking artifacts, color bleeding and smearing. However, the compression techniques also influence the color information. The distortion of color information means distortion of gamut characteristics such as gamut size and unique color from the CIELAB values for each pixel in the reconstructed images. Accordingly, this paper introduces the investigation of the relationship between image compression and the gamut characteristics for reconstructed images using MPEG compression. The results show the consist variation of gamut, hue, and chroma due to MPEG compression.

Video Caption Extraction and Image Enhancement (비디오 자막 추출 및 이미지 향상에 관한 연구)

  • 본 논문에서는 비디오 자막 이미지를 인식하기 위해 필요한 영상 향상의 단계로서 다중 결합을 적용한다. 또한 다중 결합을 위한 동일한 자막의 판단 및 결합된 결과를 재평가하기 위한 방법을 제안한다. 입력된 칼라 이미지로부터 RLS(Run Length Smearing)가 적용된 에지 이미지를 얻고, 수직 및 수평 히스토그램 분포를 이용하여 자막과 자막 영역에 대한 정보를 추출한다. 프레임 내의 자막 영역의 중첩 정도를 이용하여 동일 자막을 판단하고, 동일한 자막을 갖는 프레임들끼리 다중 결합을 수행함으로써 향상된 이미지를 얻는다. 끝으로 결합된 영상에 대한 평가를 수행하여 잘못 결합된 이미지들로 인한 오류를 해결하고 재평가한다. 제안한 방법을 통해, 배경 부분의 잡영이 완화된 자막 이미지를 추출하여 인식의 정확성과 신뢰성을 높일 수 있었다. 또한 동일한 자막의 시작 프레임과 끝 프레임의 위치 파악은 디지털 비디오의 색인 및 검색에 효과적으로 이용될 수 있을 것이다.

Efficient Median Filter Using Irregular Shape Window

  • Median filtering is a nonlinear method which is known to be effective in removing impulse noise while preserving local image structure relatively well. However, it could still suffer the smearing phenomena of edges and fine details into neighbors due to undesirable influence from the pixels whose values are far off from the true value of the pixel at hand. This drawback mainly comes from the fact that median filters typically employ a regular shape window for collecting the pixels used in the filtering operation. In this paper, we propose a median filtering method which employs an irregular shape filter window in collecting neighboring pixels around the pixel to be denoised. By employing an irregular shape window, we can achieve good noise suppression while preserving image details. Experimental results have shown that our approach is superior to regular window-based methods.

  • In the past 20 years or so, numerous methods to reduce speckle in SAR images have been proposed. The primary goal of these methods is to reduce speckle without destroying resolution and smearing edge information. But the experiments indicate that there is always a kind of tradeoff between smoothing out speckle and preserving edge information. In this paper, an optimal SAR speckle filter is developed. It can effectively smooth out speckle while preserve edge information.

Surface Relaxation of Aluminum

  • We performed a total energy calculation of clean alumunum surfaces of three low indices based on a density functional theory with a local density approximation, using the Ceperly-Alder exhange correlation parametrized by Perdew and Zunger. Pseudopotentials were generated for Al of which the plane wave cut-off was 15Ry. We used Gaussian broadening of a Fermi level to accelerate the convergence of our calculation with the Gaussian energy smearing parameter of 0.005Ry. First, we determine the lattice constant of the aluminum of an face-centered-cubic structure to be 3.96 which is comparable to the experimental data of 4.05 . The cohesive energy of 4.20eV/atom and the bulk modulus of 0.775$\times$1012dyne/cm2 are also comparable to the experimental values of 3.39eV/atom and 0.772$\times$1012dyne/cm2, respectively. Then we investigated the surface relaxation of (100), (110) and (111) surfaces using a 9-layer slab separated by 6-layer thick vacuum. The results are consistent with the existing experimental results.

Effect of Carbon on Wear Resistance in Self-lubricating Fe-Cr-C-Mn-Cu Alloys

  • Recently, because of safety and environmental concerns, there has been a tendency to introduce solid self-lubricating composites for bearing materials. In this paper, we developed Fe-Cr-C-Mn-Cu cast composite alloys as a self-lubricating composite and investigated the effect of carbon on the formation of protective tribofilms during sliding. The wear resistance of these materials was mainly affected by carbon concentrations due to the fact that in particular wear passed from delamination to tribo-oxidation, reducing the wear rate. The improved wear resistance likely resulted from protective tribofilms that formed on the surface during sliding.

  • We present an innovative method of multi physics application involving energetic materials. Energetic materials are related to reacting flows in extreme environments such as fires and explosions. They typically involve high pressure, high temperature, strong shock waves and high strain rate deformation of metals. We use an Eulerian methodology to address these problems. Our approach is naturally free from large deformation of materials that make it suitable for high strain rate multi-material interacting problems. Furthermore we eliminate the possible interface smearing by using the level sets. We heave devised a new level set based tracking framework that can elegantly handle large gradients typically found in reacting gases and metals. We show several work-in-progress application of our integrated framework.

  • The most dangerous and safest place, the busiest and most serene place, the DMZ where the wounds of the bitter war melt away, but at the same time contain life and healing. In this space of paradox, we now want to look at 'peace'. The KTV documentary 'DMZ Coexistence' is made in the form of a human road documentary that consists of various perspectives looking at the DMZ, various characters, and the most unknown Korean story materials, and the stories related to the performers in UHD 4K. In this study, we will show the process of creating an 'opening title' of 'DMZ Coexistence' captured in 4k and make it usable in academia and industry in the future.
