  • With the help of nanoscale materials like carbon nanotube (CNT), there is the potential to develop new actuators that will provide higher work per cycle than previous actuator technologies, and generate much higher mechanical strength. In this study, the electrochemical actuation characteristics of nano carbon materials were experimentally studied to develop electrochemical actuators. The electrochemical actuators were composed of aqueous NaCl electrolyte and their actuating electrodes were made of multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)/polystyrene composite and graphene respectably. Actuation is proportional to charging transfer rate, and the electrolysis with an AC voltage input has very complex characteristics. To quantify the actuation property, the strain responses and output model were studied based on electrochemical effects between the nano carbon films and the electrolyte.

  • Piezoelectric materials are widely used to construct smart or adaptive structures. Although extensive efforts have been devoted to the analysis of piezoelectric materials in recent years, most researches have been conducted by assuming that the material properties are fixed and have no uncertainties. Intrinsically, material properties have a certain amount of scatter and such uncertainties can affect the performance of component. In this paper, the convex modeling is used to consider such uncertainties in calculating the crack extension force of piezoelectric material and the results are compared with the one obtained via the Monte Carlo simulation. Numerical results show that crack extension forces increase when uncertainties considered, which indicates that such uncertainties should not be ignored for reliable lifetime prediction. Also, the results obtained by the convex modeling and the Monte Carlo simulation show good agreement, which demonstrates the effectiveness of the convex modeling.

  • This paper experimentally investigates the feasibility of harvesting vibration energy from whistles using piezoelectric materials. The end goal of this research is to generate sufficient power from the whistle to power a small radio transmitter to relay a basic signal - for example, a distress call. First, the paper discusses the current literature in energy harvesting from acoustic resonance. Next, the concept of an active whistle is presented. Next, results from energy harvesting experiments conducted on conventional and ultrasonic whistles undergoing human-actuation and actuation by a pressure-regulated air supply are presented. The maximum power density of the conventional whistle actuated by a human at 100 dB sound pressure level is $98.1{\mu}W/cm^3$.

  • The objective of this study is to find the change of signal characteristics of matrix cracks due to the different specimen shapes. As the concept of the smart structure, monitoring of acoustic emission (AE) can be applied to inspect the fracture of the structures in operating condition using built-in sensors. To understand the characteristics of matrix crack signals, we performed tensile tests by changing the thickness and width of the specimens. This paper describes the implementation of time-frequency analysis such as wavelet transform (WT) fur the quantitative evaluation of fracture signals. The experimental result shows the distinctive signal features in frequency domain due to the different specimen shapes.

  • The PVDF(polyvinylidene fluoride) film sensor as one of smart sensors has good characteristics to detect the impact damages of composite structures. The capabilities of the PVDF film sensor for evaluating impact behaviors and damages of Gr/Ep laminates subjected to low-velocity impact were examined. From sensor signals, the specific wave-forms implying the damage were detected. The wavelet transform(WT) and Short Time Fourier Transform(STFT) were used to decompose the piezoelectric sensor signals in this study. The impact behaviors of Gr/Ep laminates were simulated and the impact forces were reconstructed using the sensor signals. Finally, the impact damages were predicted by finite element analysis with the reconstructed forces. For experimental verification, a series of low-velocity impact tests from low energy to damage-induced energy were carried-out. The extent of damage in each case was examined by means of ultrasonic C-scan and the measured damage areas were agreed well with the predicted areas by the F.E.A.

  • In this study, adaptation of two-way shape memory effect of SMA wire to the actuator is examined . Therefore the SMA characteristics which are training, material properties, response time at different thermal cycling rates are tested. During training, permanent deformation is accumulated till a certain number of cycle and then saturated. The amow1t of two-way strain is unchangeable over all cycle and the slope of strain(or stress)-temperature curve is slower as the increase of applied stress. The rate effect is observed resulted from the thermal distribution which heating profile differs from cooling as thermal cycling time. Using the estimated SMA properties, an experimental test for the simple smart wing is performed.

  • In this research, design scheme of fiber Bragg grating(FBG) sensor system for aircraft application is suggested from the results and the know-how from the fon11er researches on structural health monitoring techniques using fiber optic sensors. Design factors to be taken into consideration were derived for both sensor parts including connection and system parts. For the stability of FBG sensor system, design requirements of temperature, vibration, humidity, electromagnetic interference were presented from U. S. military standards. The direction of software programming which increases stability and perfon11ance of the aircraft with the FBG sensor system was also examined.

  • Control systems have been greatly studied in recent years and can be classified as: passive, active, semi-active or hybrid systems. Most forms of control systems have been applied in a centralized manner where all the information is sent to a central node where control the algorithm is then calculated. One of the possible problems of centralized control is the difficulty to scale its application. In this paper, a completely decentralized control algorithm is analytically implemented. The algorithm considers that each of the control systems makes the best decision based solely on the information collected at its location. Semi-active control is used in preference to active control because it has minimal energy consumption, little to no possibility of destabilization, a reduction in the possibility of data saturation, and a reduction in the response time in comparison to centralized control.

  • Recently, with the development of advanced thin film devices comes the need for constant high quality vacuum as the deposition pressure is more demanding. It is for this reason our research seeks to understand how the variable design factors are employed in such vacuum systems. In this study, the effects of design factor applications on the vacuum characteristics were simulated to obtain the optimum design modeling of variable models on an ultra high vacuum system. The commercial vacuum system simulator, $VacSim^{(multi)}$, was used in our investigation. The reliability of the employed simulator was verified by the simulation of the commercially available models of ultra high vacuum system. Simulated vacuum characteristics of the proposed modeling aligned with the observed experimental behavior of real systems. Simulated behaviors showed the optimum design models for the ideal conditions to achieve optimal pressure, pumping speed, and compression ratio in these systems.

  • This paper presents a dynamic analysis of three-dimensional beams. Structures made of functionally graded materials are considered. Several higher-order as well as classical theories are derived by means of a compact notation for the a-priori expansion order of the displacement field over the beam cross-section. The governing differential equations and boundary conditions are obtained in a condensed nuclear form that does not depend on the kinematic hypotheses. The problem is, then, exactly solved in space by means of a Navier-type solution, whereas time integration is performed by means of Newmark's solution scheme. Slender and short simply supported beams are investigated. Results are validated towards three-dimensional FEM results obtained via the commercial software ANSYS. Numerical investigations show that good accuracy can be obtained through the proposed formulation provided that the appropriate expansion order is considered.
