  • In this paper, we fabricated a low-cost glucose sensor with a simpler structure and fabrication process than the existing glucose sensor. The currently used glucose sensor has a three-layer structure with upper, middle, and bottom plates; here, we fabricated a single-layer glucose sensor using only a printing and dispensing process. We successfully fabricated the glucose sensor using a simple method involving the formation of an electrode and insulator layer through a 2- or 3-step printing process on plastic or paper film, followed by the dispensing of glucose oxidase solution on the electrode. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and cyclic amperometry (CA) measurements were used to evaluate the characteristics of the fabricated single-layer glucose sensor. Also, its sensitivity was analyzed through glucose-controlled blood measurements. Hence, a low-cost single-layer glucose sensor was fabricated with evaluation of its characteristics demonstrating that it has useful application in medicine.

  • The effectiveness of the newly developed smart passive control system employing a magnetorheological (MR) damper and an electromagnetic induction (EMI) part for seismic protection of base isolated structures is numerically investigated. An EMI part in the system consists of a permanent magnet and a coil, which changes the kinetic energy of the deformation of an MR damper into the electric energy (i.e. the induced current) according to the Faraday's law of electromagnetic induction. In the smart passive control system, the damping characteristics of an MR damper are varied with the current input generated from an EMI part. Hence, it does not need any control system consisting of sensors, a controller and an external power source. This makes the system much simpler as well as more economic. To verify the efficacy of the smart passive control system, a series of numerical simulations are carried out by considering the benchmark base isolated structure control problems. The numerical simulation results show that the smart passive control system has the comparable control performance to the conventional MR damper-based semiactive control system. Therefore, the smart passive control system could be considered as one of the promising control devices for seismic protection of seismically excited base isolated structures.

  • In this research the effect of bedding layer angle and bedding layer thickness on the shear failure mechanism of concrete has been investigated using PFC3D. For this purpose, firstly calibration of PFC3d was performed using Brazilian tensile strength. Secondly shear test was performed on the bedding layer. Thickness of layers were 5 mm, 10 mm and 20 mm. in each thickness layer, layer angles changes from $0^{\circ}$ to $90^{\circ}$ with increment of $25^{\circ}$. Totally 15 model were simulated and tested by loading rate of 0.016 mm/s. The results shows that when layer angle is less than $50^{\circ}$, tensile cracks initiates between the layers and propagate till coalesce with model boundary. Its trace is too high. With increasing the layer angle, less layer mobilize in failure process. Also the failure trace is very short. It's to be note that number of cracks decrease with increasing the layer thickness. The minimum shear test strength was occurred when layer angle is more than $50^{\circ}$. The maximum value occurred in $0^{\circ}$. Also, the shear test tensile strength was increased by increasing the layer thickness.

  • In this paper, we demonstrate inter-layer prediction tools for scalable video coders. The proposed scalable coder is designed to support not only spatial, quality and temporal scalabilities, but also view scalability. In addition, we propose quad-tree inter-layer prediction tools to improve coding efficiency at enhancement layers. The proposed inter-layer prediction tools generate texture prediction signal with exploiting texture, syntaxes, and residual information from a reference layer. Furthermore, the tools can be used with inter and intra prediction blocks within a large coding unit. The proposed framework guarantees the rate distortion performance for a base layer because it does not have any compulsion such as constraint intra prediction. According to experiments, the framework supports the spatial scalable functionality with about 18.6%, 18.5% and 25.2% overhead bits against to the single layer coding. The proposed inter-layer prediction tool in multi-loop decoding design framework enables to achieve coding gains of 14.0%, 5.1%, and 12.1% in BD-Bitrate at the enhancement layer, compared to a single layer HEVC for all-intra, low-delay, and random access cases, respectively. For the single-loop decoding design, the proposed quad-tree inter-layer prediction can achieve 14.0%, 3.7%, and 9.8% bit saving.

  • Recently, dense sensor instrumentation for structural health monitoring has motivated the need for novel passive wireless sensors that do not require a portable power source, such as batteries. Using a layer-by-layer self-assembly process, nano-structured multifunctional carbon nanotube-based thin film sensors of controlled morphology are fabricated. Through judicious selection of polyelectrolytic constituents, specific sensing transduction mechanisms can be encoded within these homogenous thin films. In this study, the thin films are specifically designed to change electrical properties to strain and pH stimulus. Validation of wireless communications is performed using traditional magnetic coil antennas of various turns for passive RFID (radio frequency identification) applications. Preliminary experimental results shown in this study have identified characteristic frequency and bandwidth changes in tandem with varying strain and pH, respectively. Finally, ongoing research is presented on the use of gold nanocolloids and carbon nanotubes during layer-by-layer assembly to fabricate highly conductive coil antennas for wireless communications.

  • This paper proposes a new method using multi-layer overlapped windows to improve the performance of YOLO network which is vulnerable to detect small dense objects. In particular, the proposed method uses the YOLO Network based on the multi-layer overlapped windows to track small dense vehicles that approach from long distances. The method improves the detection performance for location and size of small vehicles. It allows crossing area of two multi-layer overlapped windows to track moving vehicles from a long distance to a short distance. And the YOLO network is optimized so that GPU computation time due to multi-layer overlapped windows should be reduced. The superiority of the proposed algorithm has been proved through various experiments using captured images from road surveillance cameras.

  • A higher order zig-zag shell theory is developed to refine accurately predict deformation and stress of smart shell structures under the mechanical, thermal, and electric loading. The displacement fields through the thickness are constructed by superimposing linear zig-zag field to the smooth globally cubic varying field. Smooth parabolic distribution through the thickness is assumed in the transverse deflection in order to consider transverse normal deformation. The mechanical, thermal, and electric loading is applied in the sinusoidal distribution function in the in-surface direction. Thermal and electric loading is given in the linear variation through the thickness. Especially, in electric loading case, voltage is only applied in piezo-layer. The layer-dependent degrees of freedom of displacement fields are expressed in terms of reference primary degrees of freedom by applying interface continuity conditions as well as bounding surface conditions of transverse shear stresses. In order to obtain accurate transverse shear and normal stresses, integration of equilibrium equation approach is used. The numerical examples of present theory demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed theory. The present theory is suitable for the predictions of behaviors of thick smart composite shell under mechanical, thermal, and electric loadings combined.

  • Pervasive computing and Internet of Things (IoT) have recently received considerable interest to deploy solutions for the future Internet. Smart environments are integrated with Semantic Web to provide context-awareness to the processed information. Self-learning techniques have been adopted within smart solutions for efficient retrieval of data but do not process data with privacy parameters for in-place authorization. To overcome this issue, we present a novel approach of deploying access control as a service mechanism within Semantic Web based smart environment by using eXtensible Access Control Markup Language (XACML). The proposed XACML as a Service (XACMLaaS) approach offers fine-grained access control for protecting information within smart environment. In this paper, we have defined mathematical rules for each components of proposed access control service layer. These rules are for implementation of access control using XACML. The proposed approach allows the adaptation of authorization of information at component level and provides scalable solution for authorization policies and rule enforcement within smart environment.

  • Active control of flexural vibrations of smart laminated composite beams has been carried out using piezoceramic sensor/actuator and viscoelastic material. The beams with passive constrained layer damping hale been analyzed by formulating the equations of motion through the use of extended Hamilton's principle. The dynamic characteristics such as damping ratio and modal damping of the beam are calculated for various fiber orientations by means of iterative complex eigensolution method. This paper addresses a design strategy of laminated composite under flexural vibrations to design structure with maximum possible damping capacity.

  • In this research, vibration and smart control analysis of a concrete foundation reinforced by $SiO_2$ nanoparticles and covered by piezoelectric layer on soil medium is investigated. The soil medium is simulated with spring constants and the Mori-Tanaka low is used for obtaining the material properties of nano-composite structure and considering agglomeration effects. With considering first order shear deformation theory, the total potential energy of system is calculated and by means of Hamilton's principle in three displacement directions and electric potential, the six coupled equilibrium equations are obtained. Also, based an analytical method, the frequency of system is calculated. The effects of applied voltage, volume percent and agglomeration of $SiO_2$ nanoparticles, soil medium and geometrical parameters of structure are shown on the frequency of system. Results show that with applying negative voltage, the frequency of structure is increased.
