In this paper, the characteristics of RB(rubber bearing) were studied by various prototype tests on RB with low hardness rubber. The characteristics of RB were tested on displacements, repeated cycles, frequencies, vertical pressures, temperature, vertical stiffness and the capability of shear deformation. The prototype test showed that the displacement and vertical pressures were the most governing factors influencing on characteristics of RB. The effective stiffness and equivalent damping of RB showed small increment in high frequency range. After the repeated cyclic test with 50's cycles, the effective stiffness and equivalent damping of RB were almost constant compared with those of the 1st cycles due to low hysteretic damping. The shear modulus of RB was reduced after large deformation, and this value of RB was partly recovered after 40 days. Finally, the shear failure test of RB was conducted, the prototype was failed over 490% of shear strain, and real size RB was failed over 430% of shear strain.
For geotechnical design in practice, soils are, in general, assumed to behave as a linear elastic or perfect plastic material. More realistic geotechnical design, however, should take into account various factors that affect soil behavior in the field, such as non-linearity of stress-strain response, stress history, and water content. In this study, a series of laboratory tests including triaxial and resonant column tests were peformed with sands of various silt contents, relative densities, stress states, OCR and water contents. This aims at investigating effects of various factors that affect strength and stiffness of sands. From the results in this study, it is found that the effect of OCR is significant for the intermediate stress-strain range from the initial to failure, while it may be ignored for the initial stiffness and peak strength. For the effect of water content, it is observed that the initial elastic modulus decreases with increasing water content at lower confining stress and relative density At higher confining stresses, the effect of water content Is found to become small.

The complexity of determining strain associated with shear modulus and damping ratio in torsional tests has been resolved by means of several approaches. Particularly, the modified equivalent radius approach is adequate to when generating the plots of equivalent radius ratio versus strain more effectively over any range of strains in resonant column and torsional shear (RC/TS) tests. The modified equivalent radius approach was applied for hyperbolic, modified hyperbolic, and Ramberg-Osgood models in evaluating damping ratio. Results showed that using a single value of equivalent radius ratio based on conventional equivalent radius approach is not appropriate. A new model was developed to consider the soil damping behavior at small strains as well as hysteretic damping and it was attempted to determine adjustments are required in evaluating strain associated damping when combining the two damping components.

The objective of this study is to investigate the effects of rigid end platens on effective stresses in soil mass during consolidation. The friction between the teeth of top cap/base pedestal and the specimen during consolidation decreases the radial and tangential effective stresses in RC specimens. However, it is unpractical to measure the effective stresses in the soil specimen. Two approaches were used to evaluate the state of stress in RC specimens during consolidation. First, careful measurements were made of small strain shear modulus, $G_{max}$ in specimens with carefully controlled void ratios and stress histories, to infer the state of stress. And second, a finite element analysis was performed to analytically evaluate the effect of various soil parameters on the state of stress in RC specimens during consolidation. By combining these experimental and analytical results, an example was performed to predict the average state of stress in RC specimens during consolidation.

A settlement prediction method based on shear wave velocity measurements and soil nonlinearity was recently developed and verified by means of centrifuge tests. However, the method was only applicable to heavily overconsolidated soil deposits under enlarged yield surfaces. In this study, the settlement evaluation method was refined to consider the stress history of the sublayer, based on an overconsolidation ratio evaluation technique, and thereby incorporate irrecoverable plastic deformation in the settlement calculation. A relationship between the small-strain shear modulus and overconsolidation ratio, which can be determined from laboratory tests, was adopted to describe the stress history of the subsurface. Based on the overconsolidation ratio determined, the value of an empirical coefficient that reflects the effect of plastic deformation over the elastic region is determined by comparing the overconsolidation ratio with the stress increment transmitted by the surface design load. The refined method that incorporate this empirical coefficient was successfully validated by means of centrifuge tests, even under normally consolidated loading conditions.
Mixtures of sand and rubber particles ($D_{sand}/D_{rubber}=1$) are investigated to explore their characteristics under different stain level. Mixtures are prepared with different volumetric sand fractions ($sf=V_{sand}/V_{total}$). Experimental data are gathered from a resonant column, an instrumented oedometer, and a direct shear tests. Results show that sand and rubber differently control the behavior of the whole mixture with strain level. Non-linear degradation of small strain stiffness is observed for the mixtures with $sf{\geq}0.4$, while the mixtures with low sand fraction ($sf{\leq}0.2$) show significantly high elastic threshold strain. Vertical stress-deformation increases dramatically when the rubber particle works as a member of force chain. The strength of the mixtures increases as the content of rubber particle decreases, and contractive behavior is observed in the mixtures with $sf{\leq}0.8$. Rubber particle plays different roles with strain level in the mixture: it increases a coordination number and controls a plasticity of the mixture in small strain; it prevents a buckling of force chain in intermediate strain; it leads a contractive behavior in large strain.

The representative tests in this study are performed at a selected site which has the soil layers to analyze the safety and economy of the dynamic analysis for the variable soil conditions. Crosshole test and downhole test of small strain level tests and triaxial test of large strain level test are performed in the soil layers, and in the rock layers, crosshole test and downhole in-situ tests and laboratory sonic test are performed to measure the dynamic shear modulus, damping ratio, and Poisson$\acute{s}$ ratio of the soil and the rock. The correlations between the dynamic soil properties from the tests and the basic soil properties are determined through the regression analysis. The representative design value of the soil is determined by probability analysis of the test results. It is determined from the nonlinear stress-strain model in soils, and the value at small strain level is computed in rocks according to the distribution of the type of soils and the affecting variables. The constitutive value is systematized to be utilized in the analysis of the test results, and computation of the input soil data.

The deformation characteristics of cohesionless soils in Korea were investigated using resonant column tests. Total 60 samples, which were sampled from sedimentary and residual soils and reconstituted using controlled particle-size distributions, were prepared. The confining pressure applied in the tests ranges from 20 kPa to 500 kPa. The test results ware categorized into 3 groups including clean sands, silt and silty sand, and residual soils. Based on test results, the small-strain shear modulus(G$_{max}$) and damping ratio(D$_{min}$) were determined and the effects of confinement on G$_{max}$ and D$_{max}$ were characterized. The empirical correlations predicting G$_{max}$ were suggested for 3 group soils. Nonlinear deformational characteristics of clean sands are significantly affected by confining pressure and the ranges and mean curves for G and D are suggested considering the range of confining Pressure. The silt and silty sand and residual soils were weakly affected by confining pressure, so the representative ranges and curves, independent of confining pressure, were proposed.d.posed.d.

In the earth structures of railways, large coarse granular materials are widely used as fill materials. However, experimental studies that consider the dynamic properties of these coarse granular materials have rarely been carried out in Korea due to the lack of a large scale test apparatus in this country. In this study, large scale cyclic triaxial tests were carried out for materials such as reinforced roadbed (subballast, graded crushed stone), transition zone gravel, and the upper subgrade of a railway. These specimens were prepared according to certain conditions (dry unit weight, grain size distribution, and so on) specified in the Korea railroad design standard. Based on these large triaxial test results, normalized shear modulus and damping ratio curves according to small strain level are suggested. A model and coefficients for each material are also proposed.
The Jeju sand was sampled from the beach in Jeju Island and its basic properties were analyzed. The cementation effect of Jeju coastal sediments was evaluated from in-situ tests such as SPT, CPT, and the Suspension-PS test. It was shown from test results that the Jeju sand has high extreme void ratios due to the angularity of grains and the intra-particle voids of hollow particles, similar to typical calcareous sands. From cone penetration test in the calibration chamber, it was found that the cone resistance($q_c$)-relative density($D_R$)-vertical effective stress(${\sigma}_v'$) relation of Jeju sand almost matches that of high compressible quartz sand. However, the $q_C-D_R-{\sigma}_v'$ correlation suggested for uncemented Jeju sand overestimates the relative density of coastal sediments of Jeju Island due to the cementation effect. From the analysis of the relation of cone resistance, N value, and small strain shear modulus measured in-situ, it seems reasonable to assume that the coastal sediment of Jeju Island is a naturally cemented one.
