The present study is an experimental investigation into the behaviour of high strength concrete square short columns subjected to biaxial bending moments and strengthened by GFRP laminates. The main objectives of the study are: to evaluate the improvement in the structural performance of HSC short square columns subjected to small biaxial eccentricity when strengthened by externally applied FRP laminates, and to investigate the optimum arrangement and amount of FRP laminates to achieve potential enhancement in structural performance especially ductility. The parameters considered in this study are: number of FRP layers and arrangement of wraps. The load eccentricity is kept corresponding to e/t = 0.125 in two perpendicular directions to the columns principal axes, and the wraps are applied in single or double layers (partial or full wrapping). In the present work, test results of five full scale concrete columns are presented and discussed. The study has shown that FRP wraps can be used successfully to enhance the ductility of HSC columns subjected to biaxial bending by 300%.
The annual income (gross margin) in 1989/90 of a sample of 274 farmers in seven milk cooperatives was analyzed in the sugar cane, cassava, and horticulture areas in East Java. On average dairying contributed 42%, crops 29% and off-farm revenue 29%. Dairy income was highest in the cassava area, where it compensated for the low crop income, and lowest in the sugar cane area. Farm area and average milk yield per day per cow correlated positively with farmer's income, whereas crop income increase significantly with farm area and with the number of cows. The level of total cost per cow had a negative impact on dairy and with the number of cows. The level of total cost per cow had a negative impact on dairy and on total income. Government officials and other professionals engaged in dairying had a significantly higher total income than those with their main occupation in dairying, cropping or working as farm labourers. Uneducated farmers obtained a significantly larger income through crops, whereas farmers with tertiary education obtained more income through off-farm work, This study suggests that more attention must be paid to the actual use of labour and the improvement of the dairy output/cost ratio.

Recently, many photovoltaic systems (PV systems) including solar parks and PV farms have been built to prepare for the post fossil fuel era. To investigate the degradation process of the PV systems and thus, efficiently operate PV systems, there is a need to visually monitor PV systems in the range of infrared ray through the Internet. For efficient visual monitoring, this paper explores a multithreaded implementation of a recently developed HEVC standard whose compression efficiency is almost two times higher than H.264. For an efficient parallel implementation under a meshbased 64 multicore system, this work takes into account various design choices which can solve potential problems of a two-dimensional interconnects-based 64 multicore system. These problems may have not occurred in a small-scale multicore system based on a simple bus network. Through extensive evaluation, this paper shows that, for an efficient multithreaded implementation of HEVC intra prediction in a mesh-based multicore system, much effort needs to be made to optimize communications among processing cores. Thus, this work provides three design choices regarding communications, i.e., main thread core location, cache home policy, and maximum coding unit size. These design choices are shown to improve the overall parallel performance of the HEVC intra prediction algorithm by up to 42%, achieving a 7 times higher speed-up.
As of 2003, construction waste has been produced at the level of 130,614.8 tons/day, in which the amount of waste concrete was 92,639.1 tons/day and accounted for about 66.4% of the amount of construction waste. Waste concrete is mainly produced in construction work and civil engineering work. Especially, road surface crushing method using a large amount of water requires thorough management of concrete wastewater. The aim of this study was to analyze water pollution due to concrete wastewater generated in repair of bridge deck using road surface crushing equipment and to suggest reasonable countermeasures for solve the problem. In this study, it was surveyed current conditions of produced concrete wastewater in bridge deck repair, analyzed physical features of concrete wastewater, expected effects of water pollution on inflow rivers if it is not treated, established treatment plan of water pollution by categories, and calculated capacity of each treatment process and required amount of necessary chemicals. As a result of sampling wastewater generated in field sites and testing it at a lab scale, it was revealed that the original wastewater was produced in removing concrete from bridge deck slabs using surface crushing equipment whose pH was 12.53, CODMn was 12.910mg/L, SS was 547.0mg/L, and other heavy metals were included in extremely small quantities.
This research was performed for developing of biological treatment process of odor gas such as MEK, $H_{2}S$, and toluene, which is generated from the food waste recycling process. To establish the operational conditions of odor gas removal by small-scale biofiltration equipment, it was continuously operated by using toluene as a treating odor object. When the odor treating microorganisms were adhered to fibril form biofilter, high removal efficiency over 93% was obtained by biofilm formation. At 400 ppm of inlet odor gas concentration and 10 sec of retention time, the removal efficiency was 76% and 93% in 1st stage reactor and 2nd stage reactor, respectively. However, the removal efficiency remained over 97% at the operational conditions above 15 sec of retention time.
Evolutionary operation (EVOP) proposed by Box (1957) is a method for continuous monitoring and improvement of a full-scale manufacturing process with the objective of moving the operating conditions toward the better ones. EVOP consists of systematically making small changes in the levels of the two or three process variables under consideration. Data are collected on the response variable at each point of two level factorial design with the center point and a cycle is said to have been completed. The cycles are replicated sequentially until the decision is made on whether further cycle of experiments is needed to conclude the significance of any of main effects or interaction effects or the curvature. In this paper, an improved flow chart of EVOP is proposed and how to determine the number of cycles is studied based on the size of type II error. In order to reject the alternative hypothesis of interests with more confidence and conclude that we believe in the null hypothesis of no effects, we propose a counter measure $p^*-value$ corresponding to the p-value. The relationship of $p^*-value$ to the probability of type II error ${\beta}$ under the alternative hypothesis of interests is analogous to that of p-value to the probability of type I error ${\alpha}$. Also the implementation of EVOP with a mixture experiment is discussed.
This study aimed to elucidate the relationship between theoretical parameters affecting the coagulation process and the real coagulation phenomenon applied to the dye wastewater. Emphasis was placed on the effective removal of the suspend particulates. Parameters studied in this study are pH, coagulant concentration and surface potential. Optimal dosages of coagulants by the measurement of the zeta potential at lower then $25^{\circ}C$ are 5\times$10^P-3}$ M of $FeCl_3 and 1.4\times10^{-6}M of Fe_2(SO_4)_3$. The results were well agreeded with the separate Jar-test results. Emphasis was also placed on the relationship between water quality and the content of SS. It was found that the COD and DOC were reduced to 65% and 85%, respectively. The turbidity at the above condition was reduced from 300 NTU to 0~1 NTU. Efforts were made to clarify the behavior of the suspend solid as affecting the water quality. 12,000~13,000 particles/10mL in $1~50\mu$m size range particulates in the raw wastewater were reduced to 300 particle/10mL in the same range after treatment. This research has proposed the methodology to find out the optimal condition of coagulation for small scale wastewater treatment plant or chemical coagulation process.
The treatment of the washout from small scale incinerator was performed physically, chemically and biologically. The results are as follows. 1. SS, FS removal efficiency of washout wastewater from incinerator was 67.4%, 37.4%, while SS, FS of sewage wastewater was removed 63.2% 35.4% respectively. 2. The optimal conditions for chemical coagulation turned out to be pH 7.5, alum(Al2O3 10%) 30ml/ι and polyelectrolyte(A-601P 0.1%) 4ml/ι. SS 86%, FS 89.5%, BOD 42.5% and CODMn, 63.5% was removed and the removal efficiency of some metals are shown as Pb 93.5%, Zn 86.5% and Fe 80.6%. The concentration of the effluent was SS 9mg/ι, BOD 98.4mg/ι, and CODMn 138.4mg/ι. 3. The removal efficiency in treating washout wastewater of incinerator through HBC-briquet media was getting higher with increasing HRT, and mixed wastewater with 1:1, 1:2 ratio could be met up to the standard limit with higher HRT than 12hr. Under the condition of 1:2 mix ratio and HRT 24 hr, removal efficiency of SS, BOD, CODMn, T-N and T-P was 92.1%, 90%, 87%, 48.2% and 48%, respectively, and the concentration of treated wastewater was SS 2.9 mg/ι, BOD 10.3mg/ι, CODMn 14.1mg/ι, T-N 11.6 mg/ι and T-P 1.3 mg/ι, respectively.
An experimental research was conducted in order to study the treatability of municipal landfill leachate using a combined physio-chemical and biological treatment. The leachate was obtained from Nanjido landfill site in Seoul. Several sets of bench-scale sequencing batch reactor(SBR) and physic-chemical reactors were used as experimental apparatus. This experiment lasted for about 2 years. The results are as follows: 1. The characteristics of Nanjido landfill leachate were pH 7.4~8.2, BOD 79~450mg/L, COD 998~1460mg/L, $NH_3-N$ 1380~3412mg/L, 7-P 2.6~7.0mg/L, color 890~1992 unit, and heavy metals are a very small amount. 2. Either physio-chemical or biological treatment of Landfill leachate alone did not work well. So for the adequate treatment of leachate, it was necessary to deal with the physio-chemical pretreatment before biological treatment. And it was found that both electrolysis and ozone treatment are better pretreatments of leachate than others. 3. In this study, landfill leachate was effectively processed by two step : first by electrolysis pretreatment, and secondly by SBR treatment. Thus, the study showed considerable substrate removal of raw leachate, even though the rate of COD removal depended on HRT.
