Development of a Finite Element Model for Crashworthiness Analysis of a Small-Sized Bus (소형버스 정면 충돌 특성 해석을 위한 유한요소 모델의 개발)

  • This paper develops a finite element model for crashworthiness analysis ova small-sized bus. The full vehicle finite element model is composed of 31,982 shell elements,599 beam elements,42 bar elements, and 34,204 nodes. The model uses four material models (such as elastic, elastic-plastic(steel), rigid. and elastic-plastic (rubber) material model) of PAM-CRASH. The model uses four contact types to define sliding interfaces in ten areas. A frontal crash test using an actual vehicle with 30mph velocity to a rigid barrier is carried out. Vehicle pulses at lower part of left and right b-pillar are measured, and deformed shapes of frame and driver seat's lower left area are photographed. A frontal crash simulation using the developed full vehicle finite element model is performed with PAM-CRASH installed in super computer SP2. The simulation is performed with the same conditions as the test. The measured vehicle pulses and photographed deformed shapes from the test are compared to ones from the simulation to validate the reliability of the developed model.

  • Geologic noise, especially located at shallow depth, can be a great obstacle in the interpretation of geophysical data. Thus, it is important to suppress geologic noise in order to accurately detect major anomalous bodies in the survey area. In the inversion of geophysical data, model parameters at shallow depth, which have small size and low contrast of physical property, can be regarded as one of geologic noise. The least-squares method with smoothness constraint has been widely used in the inversion of geophysical data. The method imposes a big penalty on the large model parameter, while a small penalty on the small model parameter. Therefore, it is not easy to suppress small anomalous boies. In this study, we developed a new inversion scheme which can effectively suppress geologic noise by imposing a big penalty on the slowly varying model parameter and a small penalty on the largely varying model parameter. We call the method MTE (main-target emphasizing) inversion. Applying the method to the inversion of 2.5D small loop EM data, we can ensure that it is effective in suppressing small anomalous boies and emphasizing major anomalous bodies in the survey area.

Development and Applications of Hydrologic Model of Storm Sewer Runoff at Small Urban Area (도시소유역의 유출해석을 위한 수문모형의 개발과 응용)

  • The paper presents the development and applications of physically-based urban runoff analysis model, URAM, which is capable of simulating sewer runoff hydrographs and inundation conditions within a small urban catchment. The model considers three typical flow conditions of urban drainage networks, whichn are overland flow, gutter flow, and conduit flow during a storm. Infiltration, retention storage and flow routing procedures are physically depicted in model. It was tested satisfactorily with field data from a tested catchment having drainage area of 4.91 ha. It was also applied to other urban areas and found to adequately simulate inundation areas and duration as observed during storms. The test results as well as model components are described in the paper.

Analytic Model for Concentration Deficit Profile Caused by a Large Vegetated Area (녹지의 대기정화효과 분석을 위한 해석적 대기확산모델의 유도)

  • A simple analytic model is proposed here to analyze the concentration deficit field caused by a large area of vegetated area. With non-dimensional deposition velocity chosen as small parameter, the regular perturbation method is exploited to derive the mass balance equation and the dynamic equations for the concentration deficit field, Analytic solutions to those equations are obtained in a closed form for several cases of interest, assuming that the concentration field is stationary and the plume can be nicely approximated as Gaussian for a point source. The results suggest that quite a negligible fraction (less than 1%) of the gaseous air pollutants emitted into the air is removed by the vegetated area of which width is 4 km in wind-wise direction, the typical dimension of the Restricted Development Zones around the metropolitan regions in South Korea.

  • Tidal amplification by construction of sea-dike and sea-walls had been detected not only near Mokpo North Harbor but also at Chungkye Bay which is connected with Mokpo North Harbor by a narrow channel. This brings about increase of tidal flat area and in particular increase of runup height and inundation area during storms. In this study, a simulation process is composed of wind wave generation model for large area and wave inundation model for small coastal zone. The nonlinear version of mild-slope equation is modified for simulating wind-driven surge and wave inundation at a small area. The models are applied to Chungkye Bay, and possible inundation features at Mokpo North Harbor are investigated.

Finite Element Analysis of Pivot Stiffness for Tilting Pad Bearings and Comparison to Hertzian Contact Model Calculations (유한 요소 해석을 통해 계산된 틸팅 패드 베어링의 피봇 강성과 Hertzian 접촉 모델 해석 결과 비교)

  • Recent studies emphasize the importance of pivot stiffness in the analysis of tilting pad bearings (TPBs). The present paper develops a finite element model of the pad pivot and compares the predicted pivot stiffness to the results of Hertzian contact model calculations. Specifically, a finite element analysis generates tetrahedral mesh models with ~40,000 nodes for a ball-socket pivot and ~50,000 nodes for a rocker-back pivot. These models assume a frictionless boundary condition in the contact area. Increasing the applied loads on the pad in conjunction with increasing time steps ensures rapid convergence during the nonlinear numerical analysis. Predictions are performed using the developed finite element model for increasing the differential diameters between the pad pivot (or ball) and the bearing housing (or socket). The predictions show that the pivot contact area increases with decreasing differential diameters and increasing applied loads. Further, the maximum deformation occurring at the pivot center increases with increasing differential diameters and increasing applied loads. The pivot stiffness increases nonlinearly with decreasing differential diameters and increasing applied loads. Comparisons of results of the developed finite element model to those of Hertzian contact model calculations assuming a small contact area show that the latter model underestimates the pivot stiffnesses predicted by the finite element models of the ball-socket and rocker-back pivots, particularly for small differential diameters. This result implies the need for cautionduring the design of pivot stiffness by the Hertzian contact model.

  • When we urgently need to develop and supply an alternative energy, wind power is growing with much interest because it has relative low cost for generating power and small area for wind turbine. To estimate the wind power resource, it is necessary to make an observation first. Although the large wind farm and resources are near coast and mountain area, the wind energy in urban area has the strong thing of direct access to power generator. In this study, we estimate the probability of wind energy in urban mountain area using A2C (Atmospheric to CFD) model, which is used for horizontally urban scale phenomena. In the steady state results, the site C is most suitable for wind power in the point of the only wind speed. But, estimating the TKE and vertical wind shear, the site B is showing the better results than the site C.

Traffic Flow Characteristics and Approach Delay Models of Unsignalized Intersections Based on the Travel Speed (비신호교차로에서의 교통류특성 및 접근지체모형 개발 -상충지역 통행속도 이용-)

  • The purposes of this study are to identify Traffic Flow characteristics and to develop approach delay model of unsignalized intersection based on the travel speed in the conflicting area. The results of this study are as following ; 1. The cumulative frequency distributions of Left-turning speed show a few differences among approaches and they are distributed to lower range of speeds. On the other hand, those of through speed show obvious differences among bounds. The similar results also show in the analysis of Percentile speed. 2. The effectiveness of conflicting movements to travel speed in the conflicting area are analyzed using regression analysis. Left-turning speed model shows that Left-and Right-Conflicting speed. Through-speed model is also developed, when approaching through volume is less than 420vph. 3. Since the lost time due to the acceleration stop, and decelerlation is occured in the conflicting area, approach delay model is delivered using the travel speed models under the condition of small queuing delay.

  • Current socio-demographic change that small households are increasing fast requires new business model in housing industry. Purpose of this study is to suggest a strategic direction to the private constructors by analyzing the condition of small household's housing and small-housing market in Seoul metropolitan area. With referring to literature and analyzing statistical raw data, it was found that residents of small household were residing in different type, scale and occupation of housing depending on their age, gender and region, and small housing market was at the beginning stage so that there was no dominant figure yet. Implications are as follows: private supplier should satisfy the needs of individual subgroups of small household, then should respond to the industrial change towards rental business, finally were suggested to launch a new brand of small housing.

Fatigue Life Analysis of Rolling Contact Model Considering Stress Gradient Effect (응력 구배 효과를 고려한 구름 접촉 모델의 피로수명해석)

  • Recently, Luu suggested fatigue life equation that uses every term of the Crossland equation with stress gradient effect. Luu’s model, however, has a limit of being unable to coverage small radii that are less than a specified length. Furthermore, rolling model has a very small contact area compared to the rolling element size, and fatigue failure occurs on the small radius such as surface asperity by cyclic loading. Therefore, it is necessary to modify fatigue life equation in order to enable fatigue analysis for a small radius. In this paper, the fatigue life considering a stress gradient effect in rolling contact was obtained using Luu’s modified equation. Fatigue analysis was performed to study the effect of stress gradient on the fatigue life using newly adopted equation and to compare the results with pervious models. In order to do this, a series of simulation such as surface stress analysis, subsurface stress analysis, and fatigue analysis are conducted for two rolling balls of same size that contact each other. Through such a series of processes, the fatigue life can be calculated and equation that is proposed in this paper evaluates the fatigue life in case the contact area is small.
