  • The purpose of this study is to suggest 100MPa class ultra high strength concrete mix design model applying neural network theory, in order to minimize an effort wasted by trials and errors method until now. Mix design model was applied to each of the 70 data using binary binder, ternary binder and quaternary binder. Then being repeatedly applied to back-propagation algorithm in neural network model, optimized connection weight was gained. The completed mix design model was proved, by analyzing and comparing to value predicted from mix design model and value measured from actual compressive strength test. According to the results of this study, more accurate value could be gained through the mix design model, if error rate decreases with the test condition and environment. Also if content of water and binder, slump flow, and air content of concrete apply to mix design model, more accurate and resonable mix design could be gained.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the practical application of the self consolidating concrete for the steel concrete pannel (SCP) in module LNG storage tank proposed in the previous research. We evaluated the physical properties and filling performance of developed concrete for the SCP module. First, a slump flow test was conducted to evaluate the performance of the proposed guidelines for the filling test. As a result, all of the concrete used showed satisfactory performance. Based on the results of the previous study, it was found that the reliability of the required time measured by the $T_{500}$ test and the rheometer results measured before and after pumping was 0.94 which means the separation and blocking should not occur. The L-box test and the U-box test were conducted before and after pumping. All of the guidelines suggested showed satisfactory performance. SCP module for LNG storage tanks was fabricated on actual size scale to evaluate the practical application at the final site. As a result, it was confirmed that satisfactory filling performance was obtained in all the specimens.

  • In view of the increasing utility of concrete as a construction material, the major challenge is to improve the quality of construction. Nowadays the common problem faced by many of the concrete plants is the shortage of river sand as fine aggregate material. This led to the utilization of locally available materials from quarries as fine aggregate. With the percentage of fines present in Crushed Rock Fines (CRF)or crushed sand is more compared to river sand, it shows a better performance in terms of fresh properties. The present study deals with the formulation of SCC mix design based on the chosen plastic viscosity of the mix and the measured plastic viscosity of cement pastes incorporating supplementary cementitious materials with CRF and river sand as a fine aggregate. Four different combinations including two binary and one ternary mix are adopted for the current study. Influence of plastic viscosity of the mix on the fresh and hardened properties are investigated for SCC mixes with varying water to cement ratios. It is observed that for an increasing plastic viscosity of the mix, slump flow, T500 and J-ring spread increased but V-funnel and L-box decreased. Compressive, split tensile and flexural strengths decreased with the increase in plastic viscosity.

  • Self-compacting concrete is widely used around the globe today due to its special and unique properties. This study examines the effect of natural and crushed gravel combinations in different percentages in short-and long-term properties of concrete. The best utilized sand had a fineness modulus of 2.7. In the mentioned mix designs, silica fume was used with 0 and 7% of the weight of the cement. In order to check the properties of fresh and hardened concrete, 9 and 5 test types were performed, respectively. The carried out tests were slump flow, V-funnel, J-ring, L-box, U-box and column segregation for fresh concrete, and compressive, tensile and flexural strengths for hardened concrete. A mix with only 100% natural gravel was considered as the control mix. According to the results, the control mix design and the one containing 100% crushed gravel with silica fume were the best in fresh and hardened concrete tests, respectively. Finally, using the optimization method, a mix design with 25% natural gravel, 75% crushed gravel and silica fume was introduced as the best mix in terms of the results of both fresh and hardened concrete tests.

  • This paper reports the effects of coarse and fine recycled concrete aggregates (RCA) on fresh and hardened properties of self-compacting concrete (SCC) containing ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBFS) as cement replacement. For this purpose, three SCC mixes groups, were produced at a constant water to binder ratio of 0.38. Both fine and coarse recycled aggregates were used as natural aggregates (NA) replacement at different substitution levels of 0%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% by volume for each mix group. Each group, included 0, 15% or 30% GGBFS as Portland cement replacement by weight. The SCC properties investigated were self-compactability parameters (i.e., slump flow, T500 time, V-funnel flow time, L-box passing ability and sieve stability), compressive strength, capillary water absorption and water penetration depth. The results show that the combined use of RCA with GGBFS had a significant effect on fresh and hardened SCC mixes. The addition of both fine and coarse recycled aggregates as a substitution up to 50% of natural aggregates enhance the workability of SCC mixes, whereas the addition from 50 to 100% decreases the workability, whatever the slag content used as cement replacement. An enhancement of workability of SCC mixes with recycled aggregates was noticed as increasing GGBFS from 0 to 30%. RCA content of 25% to 50% as NA replacement and cement replacement of 15% GGBFS seems to be the optimum level to produce satisfactory SCC without any bleeding or segregation. Furthermore, the addition of slag to recycled concrete aggregates of SCC mixes reduces strength losses at the long term (56 and 90 days). However, a decrease in the capillary water absorption and water permeability depth was noticed, when using RCA mixes with slag.

  • With the development of concrete technology, producing concrete products that have the ability to flow under their own weights and do not need internal or external vibrations is an important achievement. In this study, assessments are made on using travertine, marble and limestone rock flours in self-compacting lightweight concrete (SCLC). In fact, the effects of these powders on plastic and hardened phases of SCLC are studied. To address this issue, concrete mixtures with water to cementitious materials ratios of 0.42 and 0.45 were used. These mixtures were made with 0 and 10% silica fume (SF) replacement levels by cement weight. To achieve lightweight concrete, lightweight expanded clay aggregate (Leca) with the bulk density of about $520kg/m^3 $was utilized. Also two kinds of water were consumed involving tap water and magnetic water (MW) for investigating the possible interaction of MW and rock flour type. In this study, 12 mixtures were studied, and their specific weights were in the range of $1660-1692kg/m^3$. To study the mixtures in plastic phase, tests such as slump flow, J-ring, V-funnel and U-box were performed. By using marble and travertine powders instead of limestone flour, the plastic viscosities and rheology were not changed considerably and they remained in the range of regulations. Moreover, SCLC showed better compressive strength with travertine, and then with marble rock flours compared to limestone powders. According to the results of the conducted study, MW showed better performance in both fresh and hardened phases in all the mixes, and there was no interaction between MW and rock flour type.

  • In this study, 150MPa ultra-high-strength concrete was manufactured, and its performance was reviewed. As technically meaningful autogenous shrinkage reportedly occurs at a W/B ratio of 40% or less, although it occurs in all concrete regardless of the W/B ratio, the effects of the use of expansive admixture and shrinkage reducer, or of the friction and restraint of forms that may result in the effective reduction of autogenous shrinkage, were reviewed. As a result, considering the flow and strength characteristics, it was found that the slump flow time was shorter with expansive admixture, and shortest with shrinkage reducer. All specimens with $30kg/m^3$ expansive admixture showed high strength at early material age. Their strength decreased due to the expansion cracks when there was excessive use of expansive admixture, and the use of shrinkage reducer did not influence the change in the strength according to the material age. The expansive admixture had a shrinkage reduction effect of 80%, while the shrinkage reducer had a shrinkage reduction effect of 30%, indicating that the expansive admixture had a stronger effect. It seems that mixing the two will have a synergistic effect. The shrinkage reduction rate was highest when the W/B ratio was 20%. The form suppressed the expansion and shrinkage at the early period, and the demolding time did not significantly influence the shrinkage. The results of the study showed that the excessive addition of expansive admixture leads to expansion cracks, and the expansive admixture and shrinkage reducer have the highest shrinkage reduction effect when they are mixed.

  • The main purpose of this study includes investigation of the rheological properties of fresh self consolidating cement paste containing chemical and mineral additives using Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model. In order to develop the model, 200 different mixes are cast in the laboratory as a part of an extensive experimental research program. The data used in the ANN model are arranged in a format of fourteen input parameters covering water-binder ratio, four different mineral additives (calcium carbonate, metakaolin, silica fume, and limestone), five different superplasticizers based on the poly carboxylate and naphthalene and four different Viscosity Modified Admixtures (VMAs). Two common output parameters including the mini slump value and flow cone time are chosen for measuring the rheological properties of fresh self consolidating cement paste. Having validated the model, the influence of effective parameters on the rheological properties of fresh self consolidating cement paste is investigated based on the ANN model outputs. The output results of the model are then compared with the results of previous studies performed by other researchers. Ultimately, the analysis of the model outputs determines the optimal percentage of additives which has a strong influence on the rheological properties of fresh self consolidating cement paste. The proposed ANN model shows that metakaolin and silica fume affect the rheological properties in the same manner. In addition, for providing the suitable rheological properties, the ANN model introduces the optimal percentage of metakaolin, silica fume, calcium carbonate and limestone as 15, 15, 20 and 20% by cement weight, respectively.

  • The study was conducted to determine the effects of adding pig blood as an admixture to both mortar and concrete. The mortar tests included the determination of its unit weight, flow and its compressive strength. Moreover, the concrete test includes the determination of air content, slump, bleeding, setting time compressive strength and freeze-thaw resistance of the material. As the test result, the utilization of pig blood, as an additive to both mortar and concrete mixtures causes air entrainment. The mortar flow increased and both the unit weight and the compressive strength of mortar decreased. As the blood replacement rate increases, the air content decreases over time, the setting and amount of bleeding showed a tendency to decline and reduced compressive strength, and the freeze-thaw resistance of the concrete increased.

  • This study investigated fundamental properties of lightweight foamed concrete using cement kiln dust (CKD) and both fly ash(FA) and stability agent. Test results showed that concrete incorporating more amounts of admixture decreased slump flow and it caused increase of superplasiticizer in order to secure the fluidity performance. In addition concrete adding stability agent showed stable flow state, resisting segregation of materials and decreasing bleeding capacity. Sinking depth of concrete incorporating 20% of CKD and adding 0.002% of stability agent was indicated at 0mm. For the properties of hardened concrete. compressive strength of concrete incorporating CKD declined due to a lower appearance density, compared with other specimens. The difference of that was not very significant and the value of ail specimen was higher than KS range. Moreover strength of concrete incorporating CKD was even higher at curing temperature $5^{\circ}C$. Tensile strength ratio of concrete incorporating CKD was indicated between 0.50 to 0.59, which is higher value than control concrete. Heat conductivity of concrete incorporating FA was under the KS range while concrete incorporating 20% of CKD was satisfied in KS. Concrete adding stability agent improved insulation performance due to the lower heat conductivity. In conclusion, it is possible that concrete incorporating 20% of CKD and adding 0.002% of stability agent can secure high quality of lightweight foamed concrete.
