In order to evaluate the physicochemical properties of sludge compost and to identify the effects water-extracts from sludge compost in 2, 6, 8, 12 weeks of decomposing process on seed germination and root elongation in cabbage, lettuce, soybean and barley plants was investigated. The content of total nitrogen in sludge compost increased slightly in 6 weeks decomposing process, and then decreased gradually. Organic matter content decreased continuously overall decomposing process. As decomposition was processing, pH of sludge compost decreased slightly, and EC increase within 6 weeks decomposing process, and then decreased. The content of nitrogen in water-extracts from sludge compost increased within 8 weeks decomposing process and decreased in 12 weeks decomposing process. The content of ammonium nitrogen was similar with that of total nitrogen, and the ratio of ammonium and nitrate increased within 8 weeks, and then decreased. Cation content and EC decreased the late of decomposing process and pH didn't change. The water-extracts from sludge compost during decomposing process inhibited seed germination and root elongation in cabbage (Brassica campestris), lettuce (Lactuca sativa), barley (Hordeum vulgare) and soybean (Glycine max). The inhibition of root elongation in cabbage was greater than that of relative seed germination, whereas relative seed germination in lettuce was more inhibit than root elongation. Relative seed germination and root elongation in soybean were inhibited slightly, but those of in barley was inhibited strongly. In this study, we would identify the effects of water-extracts from sludge compost on seed germination and root elongation was different to the species of seed. The inhibition of seed germination and root elongation treated with the water-extracts which extracted from sludge compost in the early stage of decomposing process was greater than that of in the late stage of decomposing process.
The experiment fields consisted of five plots as follows; 2, 4, and $8\;tons{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ citrus skin in combination with starch sludge and pig manure mixing compost (CSSP), $4\;ton{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ fermented pig manure compost (FPMC) treated plot, and untreated control. Plant height and stem diameter were significantly increased by CSSP. Most of all, average tuber weight and tuber yield per plant were significantly increased in 4 and $8\;tons{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ CSSP plots compared to the other plots. Marketable tuber (>50 g fresh weight) yield were superior in order of 4 and $8\;tons{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ CSSP plot, $4\;tons{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ FPMC plot, and $2\;tons{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ CSSP plot.

The effect of compost to force the cultivation using various soil and vegetation was investigated 5 times in the field for 4 years. Sewage sludge compost was validated to be useful fertilizer for the growth of a plant. and the optimal amendment amounts of compost to soil depended on the kinds of soil and vegetation, and the organic contents of compost. In the case of compost with high organic content. the optimal amended compost weight was 0.12t/are in fertile-dark brown(eutrophic) soil, 0.2t/are in sandy soil(trophic) and 0.4t/are in infertile-dark brown(oligotrophic) soil, respectively. In the case of compost with low organic content. on the other hand, the amentments of compost up to 0.6t/are was allowable without negative effect on the applied vegetation. Consequently, it can be believed that the sewage sludge compost is useful fertilizer, if keep the optimal amendment amounts(0.4t/are. year) to improve soil on cultivation of vegetation.
The aim of this paper was to study the effect of five different waste combinations (C/N 15, C/N 20, C/N 25, C/N 30, and control) of sewage sludge coupled with sawdust and cattle manure in a pilot scale rotary drum reactor, during 20 days of the composting process. Our results showed that C/N 30 possesses a higher temperature regime with higher % reduction in moisture content, total organic carbon, soluble biochemical oxygen demand and chemical oxygen demand; and higher % gain in total nitrogen and phosphorus at the end of the composting period implying the total amount of biodegradable organic material is stabilized. In addition, $CO_2$ evolution and oxygen uptake rate decreased during the process, reflecting the stable behavior of the final compost. A Solvita maturity index of 8 indicated that the compost was stable and ready for usage as a soil conditioner. The results indicated that composting can be an alternate technology for the management of sewage sludge disposal.

This study was carried out development a new composting system to lower copper and zinc concentration in plg sludge compost and conduct an inquiry into the possibility of crop cultivation. The concentrations of nitrogen, phosphorus and pH averaged 4.4%, 6.3% and 7.57, respectively, which were higher concentrations than in commercial organic fertilizers, and the concentrations of copper and zinc averaged 805 and 1,704 mg/kg, respectively, which were beyond the heavy metal concentration limit in byproduct compost. Hydrated citric acid I lowered the concentrations of copper and zinc by 58% and 97%, respectively and hydrated oxalic acid II lowered the concentrations of copper and zinc by 48% and 56%, respectively in pig sludge compost. Lower concentrations of copper and zinc in pig sludge resulted from the enhanced hydrated-citric acid concentration in organic acid solution mixed with distilled water. The concentrations of copper and zinc were 330, and 41 mg/kg in the pig sludge treated with 100% hydrated citric acid. Agitation composting system stabilized the compost earlier than the stationary composting system, in which the stabilization condition was confirmed by higher temperature by $4^{\circ}C$ at highest temperature and 7 days earlier cooling down after highest temperature. The levels of germination index (G.I) 80 were obtained 15 and 20 days after composting in agitation and stationary composting system, respectively. The concentrations of copper and zinc were 2.4 and 4.26 mg/kg respectively in soils amended with pig sludge compost after removing process of heavy metals by citric acid, but 8.0 and 22.37 mg/kg, respectively in soils amended with Pig Sludge. The concentrations of heavy metals was highest in com cultivated in soils amended with pig sludge. The copper and zinc concentrations In corn leaves were 75.2 and 50.56 mg/kg respectively, which were 4 and 2 fold higher than the com cultivated in soils amended with pig sludge compost after heavy metal removing process by hydrated citric acid.

This study was conducted to induce the optimal composting conditions of pig manure mixed with sawdust and dried paper-mill sludge in the composting for production of high quality compost. Pig manure contains high water content and How C/N ratio because of comparatively high nitrogen content than sawdust and dried paper-mill sludge. Therefore the addition of dried paper-mill sludge and sawdust to the raw materials helps controlling the C/N and the water content of compost pile. The composting system used in the experiment was agitated static bed system. The physical properties of the mixed raw materials was not good at the working conditions in the early stage of composting. The temperature of compost heap reaches at $60^{\circ}C$within 5 day after starting composting in P-2 treatment mixed with pig manure and sawdust(56.6 : 43.4). Then the water content of P-2 was 58%. The pH in all treatments were slowly decreased as the composting was proceeded. Although the changes of T-C and T-N were not extended because of the short composting experiment period. Reduction rates of T-C in treatments were 5-12% without special difference. By considering the efficiency of composting in each of five treatments with pig manure the optimal water contents was about 57% level. Mixing a sawdust as a bulking agent was more positive than dried paper-mill sludge from a viewpoint of compost quality.
This experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of application levels of nightsoil sludge compost(NSC) in 3 and 4 cuttings per annum on the dry matter yields and nutritive value of orchardgrass(Dactylis glomerata L.). Annual nightsoil sludge compost(NSC) were applied at levels of 0, 10, 20, 40 and 80 ton $㏊^{respectively}$ . Relative yields of each cut to annual dry matter yield were 29.9%, 46.% and 23.2% for 1st cut, 2nd cut and 3rd cut in 3 cutting system, 23.7%, 29.3%, 34.0% and 13.0% for 1st cut, 2nd cut, 3rd cut and 4th cut in 4 cutting system, respectively. Significantly higher dry matter yield of orchardgrass obtained were 8.11 ton $㏊^{-1}$ at level of 40 ton ㏊$^{-1}$$yr^{-1}$ in 3 cutting systems, ranges of 7.50~10.71 ton $㏊^{-1}$ at level of 10~80 ton ㏊$^{-1}$$yr^{-1}$ in 4 cutting systems than those of non application level of NSC, respectively(p〈0.05). The mean efficiency of dry matter production to application of NSC(kg DM/ton NSC) were 46 and 102 kg in 3 and 4 cutting systems, respectively. Although th contents of crude protein(CP, %) of orchardgrass were significantly higher at the application levels of 10~80 ton $㏊^{-1}$$yr^{-1}$ -1/ by NSC than those of the application levels at the 0 ton $㏊^{-1}$$yr^{-1}$ in 3 and 4 cutting systems(p〈0.05), the contents of neutral detergent fiber(NDF, %) and acid detergent fiber(ADF, %) were lower in NSC plots than those at the non-application plots of NSC. The contents of total digestible nutrient(TDN, %) and relative feed value(RFV) of orchardgrass were significantly increased with increase the applicaton levels of NSC(p〈0.05).

Since 2003, Korean government has restricted landfill application of organic waste, which shares approximately 56% of total waste sludge from municipal and industrial wastewater treatment plants. In addition, enforcement of the ocean disposal prohibition law is effective from 2005. Organic sludge was composted for the purpose of converting to organic fertilizer. After moisture content was regulated with bulking agents aerobic treatment performed. When composting was conducted, commercial and activated microbe materials, identified from soil were seeded in sewage sludge. Carbon dioxide production was increased sharply after 24 hours. Temperature and pH of compost reached to $66.2^{\circ}C$ and 8. Heavy metals were lower than their regulatory limits, which enable it to utilize as organic fertilizer.

Wastewater sludge and composted food wastes were examined as the alternatives of a landfill cover for soils to eliminate the emission of VOCs. The benefit of these alternatives is in their high sorption capacity, which is 5 to 50 times higher than natural soils. After sorption is finished, biodegradation is an important mechanism in decrease of VOCs concentration. In order to investigate appropriate VOCs degradation condition, biodegradation batch experiment is being conducted with isolated strain X9-c. Both benzene and TCE were degraded only in soil with 12%(water volume/sorbent volumn) water condition. When the water condition varied from 12 to 48% in compost, optimum water conditions of composted food waste was 36%.

The objective of this study is to improve the function of an artificial culture soil which was mixed mainly with alum sludge. The artificial culture soil was more efficient than the commercial culture soil for the growth of perennial ryegrass and bush clover. Artificial culture soil was prepared paper sludge(40%), alum sludge(30%), sewage sludge(20%), and compost (10%). This artificial culture soil had no adverse effect on phytotoxicity tests. The alum sludge gives some water holding capacity and cohesion strength to the soil enought to require no other addition of adhesive agents. The leaching of aluminum from the alum sludge was negligible even at very low pH(=2) due to the mixed compost.
