  • The wear properties of two types of $Si_3N_4$(silicon nitride) exposed to high and low humidity were examined experimentally for various sliding speed. Bearing steel was used as the disk material at pin-on-disk type sliding. Wear rates of pressureless sintered-plus-hot-isostatic pressed Si3N4 were slightly lower than those of pressureless sintered $Si_3N_4$. It was observed that adsorbed moisture and sliding speed markedly influenced the wear properties of $Si_3N_4$. The highest wear rate was obtained under the high humidity and low sliding speed condition. As the sliding speed was increased, wear rates were decreased and the humidity effect on the wear rates of $Si_3N_4$ was lowered. The result that the $Si_3N_4$ pin showed a high wear rate under the high humidity condition was explained by the property change due to the adsorbed moisture, plowing action by the hard particles of $Fe_2O_3$ from the disk, and the corrosion effect at $Si_3N_4$ surface. Increase in sliding speed was supposed to have reduced the humidity effect on wear rate of $Si_3N_4$ by raising the temperature of both the bearing steel disk and $Si_3N_4$ pin specimen.

  • In order to determine the wear properties of AIP (Arc Ion Plating) deposition, wear process was evaluated by using a Falex test machine. Also, in order to determine the effects of coating material on the wear process, TiC, TiN, and TiCN coatings of thickness about 5 $\mu\textrm{m}$∼6 $\mu\textrm{m}$ coated by Arc ion plating deposition method were tested. The wear property was determined under a dry sliding condition as a function of the applied load, sliding distance, sliding velocity and temperature. The results show that when wear of the coating-layer occurred, specific wear amount increased with the wear rate. At initial state, the wear rate rapidly increased, but it gradually reduced as the velocity increased. Also, when raising the temperature, the wear rate increased in the order of TiCN, TiN and TiC due to the frictional heat.

  • Ni-Al intermetallic coating technology is an available method for the strengthening of aluminum substrate. In this study, Ni-Al intermetallics were coated on an aluminum substrate through a reaction synthesis process at a temperature lower than melting point of aluminum. And the sliding wear properties of the coatings have been investigated to verify their usability and compared the wear properties with those of a cast Al-12.5%Si alloy and an anodizing layer on aluminum. Results show that the wear rate of the coating layer greatly increased at 1 m/s and 1.5 m/s when compared with that of the cast Al-12.5%Si alloy. Much pitting damages were observed on the worn surfaces at these sliding speeds, unlike at other sliding speeds. The wear of the intermetallic coating layer at these sliding speeds seems to be increased by pitting as a consequence of adhesion. In contrast, wear of the coating layer at other speeds hardly occurs, regardless of wear periods. Nevertheless, the wear properties of the intermetallic coating layer on the aluminum substrate through the reaction synthesis process are more stable than those of anodized aluminum and are superior to those of the cast Al-12.5%Si alloy in a steady-state wear period.

  • During sling wear of a ferrous metal, a surface layer is formed. Its microstructure, constituting phases, and mechanical property are different from those of the original wearing material. Since wear occurs at the layer, it is important to characterize the layer and understand how wear rate changes with different layers. Various layers are formed depending on external wear conditions such as load, sliding speed, counterpart material, and environmental conditions. In this research, sliding wear tests of pure iron were carried out against two different counterparts (AISI 52100 bearing steel and $Al_2O_3$) in the air and in an inert Ar gas atmosphere. Pure iron was employed to exclude other effects from secondary phases in steel on the wear. Wear tests were performed at room temperature. Worn surfaces, wear debris, and cross-sections were analyzed after the test. It was found that these two different counterparts and environments produced diverse layers, resulting in significant changes in wear rate. Against the bearing steel, pure iron showed higher wear rate in an Ar atmosphere due to severe adhesion than that in the air. On the contrary, the iron showed much higher wear rate in the air against $Al_2O_3$. Different layers and wear rates were analyzed and discussed by oxidation, severe plastic deformation, and adhesion at wearing surfaces.

  • In metal cutting at the tool-chip interface, friction generates considerable amount of heat. Thus, the knowledge of wear properties of cutting tool material in high temperature has been as one of important factors in need of clarification. The authors presented the wear properties of 5%Co-5%V-1%Nb high speed steel, fabricated by powder metallurgy, in room temperature in previous articles. The objective of this paper is to clarify the effects of temperature on its wear properties. Wear tests in sliding conditions under various temperatures have been conducted using the pin-on-disc type wear test machine. The results indicate that the wear properties of 5%Co-5%V-1%Nb high speed steel in high temperature as well as in room temperature are excellent. It may be deduced that the oxide layer formed on worn surface at high temperature is stable enough to prevent wear due to the high temperature strength of its matrix.

  • Three types of structural intermetallic compounds, $Ni_3Al$, NiAl and TiAl, having each single phase structure without pores were produced by arc-melting process. Their sliding wear properties were investigated against a hardened tool steel. It was shown that the wear of the intermetallic compounds was hardly occurred against the hardened tool steel. TiAl compound showed the best wear resistance among them. In this case, wear was preferentially occurred on the surface of the hardened tool steel of the mating material which has higher hardness. It could be found that the wear mode on intermetallics without pores by arc-melting process was different from that on its porous layer coated on steel by combustion synthesis.

  • In order to investigate the wear behavior of aluminum alloy depended on different hardness of the mating tool steel, sliding wear tests were conducted. It was found that the wear characteristics pattern of aluminum alloy for sliding speed was not affected by the hardness of the mating tool steel. However, the effects of the hardness of the mating tool steel exhibited only in relatively low sliding speed ranges. At these ranges, the wear rate of aluminum alloy decreased when increasing the hardness of the mating tool steel. This was attributed by the fact that $Al_2O_3$ particles released from the aluminum worn surface were crushed and embedded on the mating worn surface with high hardness level. At the high sliding speed ranges, wear of aluminum alloy was hardly occurred by the formation of thick $Al_2O_3$ film on the worn surface, regardless of the hardness of the mating tool steel.

  • The plasma sprayed $Cr_3C_2$-NiCr coatings are widely used as wear-resistant and corrosion-resistant materials. The mechanical and wear properties of the plasma sprayed $Cr_3C_2$-NiCr coating on steel plate were examined in this study. The pore in the coatings could be classified into two types, the one is the intrinsic pore originated from the spraying powder, the other is the extrinsic pore formed during spraying. During the tensile adhesion test, the fracture occured at the interface of top coating and bond coating. It is though that the compressive residual stress increases with the increase of the top coating thickness. From the wear test, it was found that the wear rate increased with the increase of the sliding velocity regardless of the temperature. It is thought that the fracture toughness reduces with the increase of the sliding velocity at $30^{\circ}C$ and that the adhesion amount increases with the increase of the sliding velocity at $400^{\circ}C$ It is concluded that the wear mechanism at $30^{\circ}C$ is the fracture and pull-out of the carbide particles due to the fatigue on sliding surface, while the wear mechanism at $400^{\circ}C$ is the adhesion of the smeared layer formed during wear process.

  • In this study the effect of the content of $TiB_2$ on wear properties was investigated. $Cu-TiB_2$ composites have been fabricated by hot extrusion. Sliding wear tests were peformed by a pin-on-disk type wear test machine under dry condition and loads varied with from 20N to 80N at sliding speed 3.5Hz. The test results showed that the wear losses and the friction coefficients decreased with increasing $Cu-TiB_2$ volume fraction and increasing the size of $Cu-TiB_2$ particle. Wear property of $10{\mu}m,\;5 vol\%\; TiB_2$ specimen was excellent all of the wear specimens. It is thought that the increase of plastic flow resistivity due to uniform distribution of $10{\mu}m,\;5 vol\%\; TiB_2$ wear specimen would improve wear property. The worn surface and wear debris were examined by optical microscope and scanning electron microscope.

  • A diesel engine oil formulated in KRICT and a commercial diesel engine oil (API CG-4) were tested by car and their Kinematic Viscosity, TAN, TBN, metal content, additive depletion, anti-wear property and IR analysis were analyzed. From the research, both of the tested oils had almost the same properties f3r the change of TAN and TBN, but the change of Kinematic Viscosity of formulated oil was slightly higher than that of commercial oil. The iron content in the commercial oil increased rapidly from 7000 km while that of the formulated oil was still low. These results were confirmed by the anti-wear test with a 4-ball wear test machine for the each samples. Also, for the commercial oil, the depletion factor of the Zn-DTP which was added as an anti-wear property did not change any more after 7000 km. But, that of the formulated oil changed continuously to 8000 km, which means that the ability to prevent wear of the sliding pairs exists for the formulated oil. From the analysis results of oil properties obtained by field test, it was found that the commercial oil could be used only within 7000 km, but the formulated oil could be used more than 8000 km without severe wear of the sliding parts in the diesel engine.
