The retractable roof structures have actions of various types of loads and external forces depending on the retraction and operation conditions of the roof in terms of efficiency of control and maintenance as the aspect of structural plan. In particular, there is a need for studies on the establishment of retraction controlled wind velocity to maintain the stable control and usability of roof structure against strong winds or sudden gusts during the retraction of the roof. In this paper, it was intended to provide basic materials for the development of guidelines on the operation and maintenance of domestic retractable buildings with large space by analyzing the factors affecting the retraction controlled wind velocity for the overseas stadiums with the large spatial retractable roof structures where the sliding system was applied on the steel retractable systems. As a result, the controlled wind velocity tends to decrease as the retractable roof area increases. On the other hand, the controlled wind velocity tends to increase as the retraction time increases. In addition, in the space-grid roof structures, the spherical roof structures type showed the average controlled wind velocity of 10m/sec lower than that of 17.3m/sec for curved-roof structure type, and in the curved-roof structure type, the truss roof structure showed the average controlled wind velocity of 8.9m/sec which is lower than that of 17.3m/sec for the space for the space-grid roof structure.

Structural behaviour of PSC box bridge, on which KTX train runs, is analysed up to 500 km/h speed considering 12 stages track irregularity and interaction between bridge and vehicle. To evaluate wheel forces and rotations of vehicle, lateral wheel forces, derail factor and offload factor calculated on the track combining the bridge and 170 m normal track are compared with existing allowed limits. Maximum longitudinal displacement and accumulated sliding distance of the brige bearings for simply supported and 2 span continuous PSC bridges are presented by each running speeds. Long-term friction tests based on EN-1337-2 are conducted between PTFE and DP-mate plates. Finally, the long-term friction tests are proposed to consider the increasing speed of next generation high-speed train.
Track-bridge interaction has become an essential part in the design of bridges and rails in terms of modern railways. As a unique ballastless slab track, the longitudinal continuous slab track (LCST) or referred to as the China railway track system Type-II (CRTS II) slab track, demonstrates a complex force mechanism. Therefore, a comprehensive track-bridge interaction study between multi-span simply supported beam bridges and the LCST is presented in this work. In specific, we have developed an integrated finite element model to investigate the overall interaction effects of the LCST-bridge system subjected to the actions of temperature changes, traffic loads, and braking forces. In that place, the deformation patterns of the track and bridge, and the distributions of longitudinal forces and the interfacial shear stress are studied. Our results show that the additional rail stress has been reduced under various loads and the rail's deformation has become much smoother after the transition of the two continuous structural layers of the LCST. However, the influence of the temperature difference of bridges is significant and cannot be ignored as this action can bend the bridge like the traffic load. The uniform temperature change causes the tensile stress of the concrete track structure and further induce cracks in them. Additionally, the influences of the friction coefficient of the sliding layer and the interfacial bond characteristics on the LCST's performance are discussed. The systematic study presented in this work may have some potential impacts on the understanding of the overall mechanical behavior of the LCST-bridge system.

A preliminary study on a length-variable rotor blade for a small unmanned helicopter has been conducted. After surveys on previous researches, and examining requirements for application to a small unmanned helicopter, a length-variable rotor blade was designed and manufactured to be driven by centrifugal force from rotor revolution with no mechanical actuator. The rotor blade was divided into a fixed inboard section and an outboard section sliding in span-wise direction. In order to determine the operating conditions of the length-variable rotor during revolution, and to derive the design variables of extension spring and rotor weight, a series of analyses from multi-body dynamics solution were conducted. The manufactured prototype was verified of its length-varying mechanism from a rotor stand, the results and required future improvements are discussed.
X-13-ARIMA (a popular time series analysis software) provides $3{\times}3$, $3{\times}5$, $3{\times}9$, $3{\times}15$ moving average filters for seasonal adjustment. However, there has been questions on their performance and the need for new filters is a constant topic due to Korean economic time series often containing higher irregularity and more various seasonality than other countries. In this study, two newly developed seasonal moving average filters, $3{\times}7$ and $3{\times}11$, are introduced. New filters were implemented in X-13-ARIMA and applied to 15 economic time series to demonstrate their suitability and reliability. The result shows that some series are more stable when using new seasonal moving average filters. More accurate time series analyses would be possible if newly proposed filters are used together with existing filters.

Generally the fluid flows within the centrifugal impeller passage as a decelerating flow with an adverse pressure gradient along the stream wise path. This flow tends to be in a state of instability with flow separation zones on the suction surface and on the front shroud. Hence several experimental attempts were earlier made to assess the efficacy of using boundary layer fences to trip the flow in the regions of separation and to make the flow align itself into stream wise direction so that the losses could be minimized and overall efficiency of the diffusion process in the fan could be increased. With the development of CFD, an extensive numerical whole field analysis of the effect of boundary layer fences in discrete regions of suspected separation points is possible. But it is found from the literature that there have been no significant attempts to use this tool to explore numerically the utility of the fences on the flow field. This paper attempts to explore the effect of boundary layer fences corresponding to various geometrical configurations on the impeller as well as on the diffuser. It is shown from the analysis that the fences located on the impellers near the trailing edge on pressure side and suction side improves the static pressure recovery across the fan. Fences provided at the radial mid-span on the pressure side of the diffuser vane and near the leading edge and trailing edge of the suction side of diffuser vanes also improve the static pressure recovery across the fan.
This work approaches the structural performance of masonry arches that have a small ratio between number of vossoirs and span length. The aim of this research is to compare and validate three different methods of analysis (funicular limit analysis F.L.A., kinematic limit analysis K.L.A. and plane stress Finite Element Analysis F.E.A.) with an experimental campaign. 18 failure tests with arches of different shapes and boundary conditions have been performed. The basic failure mechanism was the formation of enough hinges in the geometry. Nevertheless, in few cases, sliding between vossoirs also played a relevant influence. Moreover, few arches didn't reach the collapse. The FLA and KLA didn't find a solution close to the experimental values for some of the tests. The low number of vossoirs and joints become a drawback for an agreement between kinematic mechanism, equilibrium of forces and geometry constraints. FLA finds a lower bound whereas KLA finds an upper bound of the ultimate load of the arch. FEA is the most reliable and robust method and it can reproduce most of the mechanism and ultimate loads. However, special care is required in the definition of boundary conditions for FEA analysis. Scientific justification of the more suitability of numerical methods in front of classic methods at calculating arches with a few vossoirs is the main original contribution of the paper.

Residual drifts after an earthquake can incur huge repair costs and might need to replace the infrastructure because of its non-reparability. Proper functioning of bridges is also essential in the aftermath of an earthquake. In order to mitigate pounding and unseating damage of bridges subjected to earthquakes, a self-adaptive Ni-Ti shape memory alloy (SMA)-cable-based frictional sliding bearing (SMAFSB) is proposed considering self-adaptive centering, high energy dissipation, better fatigue, and corrosion resistance from SMA-cable component. The developed novel bearing is associated with the properties of modularity, replaceability, and earthquake isolation capacity, which could reduce the repair time and increase the resilience of highway bridges. To evaluate the super-elasticity of the SMA-cable, pseudo-static tests and numerical simulation on the SMA-cable specimens with a diameter of 7 mm are conducted and one dimensional (1D) constitutive hysteretic model of the SMAFSB is developed considering the effects of gap, self-centering, and high energy dissipation. Two types of the SMAFSB (i.e., movable and fixed SMAFSBs) are applied to a two-span continuous reinforced concrete (RC) bridge. The seismic vulnerabilities of the RC bridge, utilizing movable SMAFSB with the constant gap size of 60 mm and the fixed SMAFSBs with different gap sizes (e.g., 0, 30, and 60 mm), are assessed at component and system levels, respectively. It can be observed that the fixed SMAFSB with a gap of 30 mm gained the most retrofitting effect among the three cases.
