  • Flat-slabs, being a significant structural component, not only reduce the dead load of the structure but also reduce the amount of concrete required for construction. Moreover the use of recycled aggregates lowers the impact of large scale construction to nearby ecosystems. Recycled aggregate based concrete being a quasi-brittle material shows enormous cracking during failure. Crack growth in flat-slabs is mostly in sliding mode (Mode II). Therefore sufficient sections need to be provided for resistance against such failure modes. The main objective of the paper is to numerically determine the ultimate load carrying capacity of two self-similar flat-slab specimens and validate the results experimentally for the natural aggregate as well as recycled aggregate based concrete. Punching shear experiments are carried out on circular flat-slab specimen on a rigid circular knife-edge support built out of both normal (NAC) and recycled aggregate concrete (RAC, with full replacement). Uniaxial compression and bending tests have been conducted on cubes, cylinders and prisms using both types of concrete (NAC and RAC) for its material characterization and use in the numerical scheme. The numerical simulations have been conducted in ABAQUS (a known finite element software package). Eight noded solid elements have been used to model the flat slab and material properties have been considered from experimental tests. The inbuilt Concrete Damaged Plasticity model of ABAQUS has been used to monitor crack propagation in the specimen during numerical simulations.

  • Hydraulic servo cylinders have been used to control accurately a large machine in power plant. Especially, Piston head and bush of servo cylinder is assembled sleeve and piston head and bush made of Cu alloy and pad sealing part. A damages of sleeve and piston head, bush are caused by friction and wear. Thus, It is necessary to examine friction and wear characteristics of Cu alloys for the piston head and bush. In this study, to be reliable on the piston and cylinder parts, dry friction and wear experiments were carried out with Cu alloys of four kinds of AlBC, PBC, BC and BS using reciprocating friction tester of pin on disk type. From this study, the result was shown that the AlBC and PBC with alloy elements were excellent to resistance wear. As the sliding speed was increased, the wear loss of PBC decreased than another Cu alloy.

  • The laboratory inspection and analysis of several types of ropes such as edge tensile test, D/d tensile test and abrasion test were carried out in order to investigate the abrasion degradation by external damage and to obtain the fundamental data for measurement against the abrasion. PET ropes were socketed and evaluated under tensile testing. A yarn-on-yarn abrasion test machine has been developed to study the damage and failure associated with rubbing between fiber surfaces. The abrasion test method consists of sliding a length of interwrapped yarn against itself in a reciprocating fashion, either dry or immersed in liquid. It has also been adapted to measure yarn-on-yarn friction. The influence of spin finish on yarn friction and abrasion was investigated extensively. This study indicates that finish has a major effect not only on yarn performance but also on rope performance under the marine environment.

  • DLC (Diamond Like Carbon) films show very desirable surface interactions with high hardness, low friction coefficient, and good wear-resistance properties. The friction behavior of hydrogenated DLC film is dependent on tribological environment, especially surrounding temperature. In this work, the tribological behaviors of DLC (Diamond-like carbon) films, prepared by the radio frequency plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (RF-PECVD) method, were studied in elevated temperatures. The ball-on-disk tests with DLC films on steel specimens were conducted at a sliding speed of 60 rpm, a load of 10N, and surrounding various temperatures of $25^{\circ}C,\;40^{\circ}C,\;55^{\circ}C\;and\;75^{\circ}C$. The results show considerable dependency of DLC tribological parameters on temperature. The friction coefficient decreased as the surrounding temperature increased. After tests the wear tracks of hydrogenated DLC film were analyzed by optical microscope, scanning electron spectroscopy (SEM) and Raman spectroscopy. The surface roughness and 3-D images of wear track were also obtained by an atomic force microscope (AFM).

  • In recent years, increases in impervious areas with rapid urbanization and land use changes are causing numerous hydrologic cycle and environmental problems. Impermeable pavement have a various defect such as collection rainwater, decreasing of sliding resistance, and etc. In this study, the hydrologic cycle effect of permeable pavement were analyzed by the experiment and the numerical simulation. The numerical model used was a modified SWMM especially for considering the hydrologic cycle effect of permeable pavement. The parameters of modified SWMM were revised by the experimental results. Also, the effects of runoff quantity reduction are reviewed when permeable pavement is applied to Incheon Cheongna watershed. The hydrologic cycle analysis of Incheon Cheongna watershed, continuous simulations of urban runoff were performed. The analysis results of permeable pavement setup effect on runoff are follows: the surface runoff after permeable pavement setup decreases to 74.35% of the precipitation whereas the surface runoff before permeable pavement setup amounts to 81.38% of the precipitation; the infiltration after permeable pavement setup increases to 15.13% of the precipitation whereas the infiltration before permeable pavement setup amounts to 8.32% of the precipitation.

  • Wear and scuffing tests were conducted using friction and wear measurement of piston rings and cylinder blocks in low friction diesel engine. The frictional forces, wear amounts and cycles to scuffing in boundary lubricated sliding condition were measured using the reciprocating wear tester. The cylinder blocks were used as reciprocating specimens, and the piston rings with several coatings were used as fixed pin. Several coatings were used such as DLC, TiN, Cr-ceramic and TiAlN in order to improve the tribological characteristics. From the tests wear volume of piston ring surfaces applied various coatings were compared. During the tests coefficients of friction were monitored. Test results showed that DLC coatings showed good tribological properties. TiN and Cr-ceramic coated rings showed good wear resistance properties but produced high friction.

  • Tribological properties of hybrid type friction materials were studied. Hybrid friction materials were produced by combining non-steel(NS) and low-steel(LS) type friction materials. The emphasis of the investigation was given to possible synergistic effects from the two different friction materials, in terms of friction stability at high temperatures and the amplitude of friction oscillation, also known as stick-slip at low sliding speeds. The high temperature friction test results showed that the friction effectiveness of the hybrid friction material was well sustained compared to LS and NS friction materials. Wear resistance of the hybrid type was similar to LS friction materials. Examination of the rubbing surfaces after tests revealed that the friction characteristics of the hybrid friction material were attributed to the wear debris produced from low-steel friction materials, which were migrated to the surface of the non-steel friction material, forming new contact plateaus. The stick-slip amplitude and its frequency were pronounced when non-steel friction material was tested, while hybrid and low-steel types showed relatively small stick-slip amplitudes. These results suggest possible improvement of tribological properties by designing a hybrid composite of low-steel and non-steel friction materials.

  • The effect of extrusion temperature on the microstructure and mechanical properties was studied in gas atomized TEX>$Al_{81}Si_{19}$ alloy powders and their extruded bars using SEM, tensile testing and wear testing. The Si particle size of He-gas atomized powder was about 200-800 nm. Each microstructure of the extruded bars with extrusion temperature (400, 450 and 50$0^{\circ}C$) showed a homogeneous distribution of primary Si and eutectic Si particles embedded in the Al matrix and the particle size varied from 0.1 to 5.5 ${\mu}m$. With increasing extrusion temperature from 40$0^{\circ}C$ to 50$0^{\circ}C$, the ultimate tensile strength (UTS) decreased from 282 to 236 ㎫ at 300 K and the specific wear increased at all sliding speeds due to the coarse microstructure. The fracture behavior of failure in tension testing and wear testing was also studied. The UTS of extrudate at 40$0^{\circ}C$ higher than that of 50$0^{\circ}C$ because more fine Si particles in Al matrix of extrudate at 40$0^{\circ}C$ prevented crack to propagate.

  • The wear characteristics and wear mechanisms in TiN coating deposited on high speed steel and alloy tool steel by ion plating were investigated. Pin on V-block wear tester was used for a wear test method. The specimen was composed of three kinds of high speed steel and alloy tool steel which had different hardness by changing the heat treating condition. Three kinds of coating thickness were also applied to each specimen. Microscopic observation of worn surfaces was made by SEM. The scratch test of coating surface by the ion plating showed that critical load to break the coating interface was greater than 50N. The critical load increased with both substrate hardness and coating thickness. The wear resistance of TiN coated high speed steel became 10 times greater than that of non-coated ones. SEM observation showed that leading edge of contact was compressive and trailing edge was under maximum tensile stress and then surface cracking broke out perpendicular to sliding direction.

  • In this paper, the creep characteristics of lead and lead-free solder joint were investigated using the QFP(Quad Flat Package) creep test. Two kind of solder pastes(Sn-3Ag-0.5Cu, Sn-0.2Sb-0.4Ag-37.4Pb) were applied to the QFP solder joints and each specimen was checked the external and internal failures(i.e., wetting failure, void, pin hole, poor-heel fillet) by digital microscope and X-ray inspection. The creep test was conducted at the temperatures of $100^{\circ}C$ and $130^{\circ}C$ under the load of 15$\sim$20% of average pull strength in solder joints. The creep characteristics of each solder joints were compared using the creep strain-time curve and creep strain rate-stress curves. Through the comparison, the Sn-3Ag-0.5Cu solder joints have higher creep resistance than that of Sn-0.3Sb-0.4Ag-37.4Pb. Also, the grain boundary sliding in the fracture surface and the necking of solder joint were observed by FE-SEM.
