  • In the present study, the friction and wear properties of boundary lubricated textured surfaces were investigated. The capability of textured surfaces to feed lubricant into the interface of a sliding contact and to isolate wear partices was studied and related to the properties of the textured surfaces. Well-defined surface textures were produced by lithography and anisotropic etching of silicon wafers. Different widths and distributions of parallel groves were manufactured and subsequently the wafers were PVD coated with thin wear resistant TiN or DLC coatings, retaining the substrate texture. The surfaces were evaluated in reciprocating sliding against a ball bearing steel ball under starved or boundary lubricated conditions.

  • The friction and wear behavior of short carbon fiber reinforced polyetheretherketone was studied experimentally under dry sliding conditions against SCM440(AISI 4140) disks with different surface roughness and hardness at the low sliding speeds and the high pressures on a pin-on-disk apparatus. Under the low disk surface roughness value the earsplitting noise and stick-slip were occurred. The increased adhesion friction and wear factor with stick-slip made the friction and wear behavior worse. Under the high disk surface hardness the break and falling-off of carbon fibers were accelerated. The carbon fibers fallen off from the matrix were ground into powder between two wear surfaces and this phenomenon caused abrasive friction and wear factor to increase. So the friction and wear behavior became worse. With the transfer film made of wear particles formed on a disk, the carbon powder film formed on a pin lowered a friction coefficient.

  • Tribological properties of novolac resin composites containing particulate barite (BaSO$_4$) or potassium titanate (K$_2$Oㆍ6(TiO$_2$))whiskers (two typical space fillers for commercial automotive brake linings) were investigated. The emphasis of the current investigation was given to the effect of the two fillers on the propensity of the stick-slip phenomena and formation of stable rubbing surface. A block-on-disk type tribometer was used for friction assessment. Results showed that the BaSO$_4$-filled composite produced large friction force oscillations at slow sliding speeds and created severe damage on the gray iron counter surface. On the other hand, the composite with $K_2$Oㆍ6(TiO$_2$) whiskers formed a stable rubbing surface and showed smooth sliding behavior without large friction force fluctuation. The microscopic observation of the rubbing surface revealed that the $K_2$Oㆍ6(TiO$_2$)whiskers played a key role in the formation of stable rubbing surface and smooth sliding behavior by effectively reinforcing the resin.

  • Recent work with phosphate esters has shown that a lubricious polymeric film can formed from the vapor phase on interacting during and sliding. This lubrication technique has led to methods to reduce friction and wear to very low values at high temperatures up to 700$^{\circ}$C. Preliminary with synthetic tri aryl phosphates are very promising. The vaporized lubricant forms a polymeric film on the sliding and rolling surfaces reducing the coefficient of friction below 0.05. In-situ formation of the polymeric films shows that the polymer that is formed on the surface exists in different states depending on surface temperature.

  • In the present study, the residual stresses can have a significant on the life of structural engineering components. Residual stresses are created by the surface treatment such as shot peening or deep rolling. The objective of this experimental investigation is to study the influence of friction and wear characteristics due to residual stress under dry sliding condition. Friction and wear data were obtained with a specially designed tribometer. Test specimens were made of SUP9(leaf spring material) after they were created residual stress by shot peening treatment. Residual stress profiles were measured at surface by means of the X-ray diffraction. Sliding tests were carried out different contact pressure and same sliding velocity 0.035m/s(50rpm). Leaf spring assembly test used to strain gauge sticked on leaf spring specimen in order to measure interleaf friction of leaf spring. Therefore, we were obtained hysteresis curve. As the residual stresses of surfaces increased, coefficient of friction and wear volume are decreased, but the residual stresses of surfaces are high, and consequently wear volume do not decreased. Coefficient of friction obtained from leaf spring assembly test is lower than that obtained from sliding test. From the results, structural engineering components reduce coefficient of friction and resistant wear in order to have residual stresses themselves.

  • In previous paper, the wear properties of clutch facing materials with two different copper amounts against fly-wheel materials used in the clutch system were investigated by sliding wear tests at different applied loads and speeds. This paper have been aimed to evaluate the friction properties for clutch facing materials at the same test conditions as the previous paper. The experimental results indicated that the friction properties of clutch facing materials are influenced from the thermal conductivities of the clutch facing material and the counter material. The clutch facing material with the lower thermal conductivity and the fly-wheel material with the higher thermal conductivity showed the low and stable friction coefficient in the range of high sliding speed. This appears to be due to the formation of a film on the surface of the fly-wheel material.

  • The natural refrigerant $CO_2$has attracted as an alternative refrigerant currently used in air conditioning system, which has high global warming potential. In this study, the tribological characteristics of the sliding surfaces between a fixed scroll and an orbiting scroll of the scroll compressor were investigated in $CO_2$/ POE mixed environment. The pin-on-disk type sliding tests were carried out under the various sliding speeds, normal loads. surface roughness, and pressures. During the test, friction forces, wear amount and surface temperature were monitored.

  • Some surface pattern of tribological application is an attractive technology of engineered surface. Therefore, friction reduction is considered to be necessary for improved efficiency of machine. This study investigated the effect of friction property for angles of micro-crosshatch groove surface pattern on bearing steel using pin-on-disk test. We obtain sample which can be fabricated by photolithography process. We discuss the friction property depend on an angle of crosshatch groove surface pattern. We can verify the lubrication mechanism as Stribeck curve, which has a relationship between the friction coefficient and a dimensionless parameter under the lubrication condition. It was found that the friction coefficient was related to angle of crosshatch groove pattern on contact surface.

  • The aim of this paper is to investigate the effect of micro-dimple size on reduction friction and to understand the potential of friction reduction through micro-scale dimple to fabricate by photolithography on pin-on-disk test using flat-on-flat contact geometry. It was verify that the friction property with respect to the same pitch has been influence on the size of dimple under lubricated sliding contact. Also, we can recognize from Stribeck curve that the friction property has a connection with the size of dimple. It can explain a relationship between the friction coefficient and a dimensionless parameter for lubrication condition. The friction property has been an effect on the size of surface texture on reduction friction, not only because the density of dimple, but also because the ratio of diameter/pitch. This ratio of approximately 0.5 is recommend under the tested friction condition. It suggested that the ratio of d/p is an important parameter for surface texture design.
