  • One of the most efficient procedures for the solution of partial differential equations is the method of differential quadrature. The differential quadrature method (DQM) has been applied to a large number of cases to overcome the difficulties of complex algorithms of computer programming, as well as the excessive use of storage due to the conditions of complex geometry and loading. The in-plane vibrations of curved beams with extensibility of the arch axis, including the effects of rotatory inertial and shear deformation, are analyzed by the DQM. The fundamental frequencies are calculated for members with various slenderness ratios, shearing flexibilities, boundary conditions, and opening angles. The results are compared with the numerical results obtained by other methods for cases in which they are available. The DQM gives good mathematical precision even when only a limited number of grid points is used, and new results according to diverse variations are also suggested.

  • A number of perforated plates are utilized for the passage of the crew and the equipment, reducing weight and the arrangement of piping. Hull girders in double bottom and floor plates are the typical parts which have those plates in a ship structure, and the perforated plate is usually positioned at the place which has less loading without local strength problems. In the case of utilizing the plate inevitably at the place which has large strength, an opening of the plate has large effect on the buckling strength due to in-plane rigidity and ultimate strength. Therefore the assessments of the elastic buckling strength and the ultimate strength for the perforated plate are the essential requirements for determining the dimensions of the parts at the initial design stage. With above reason, a need of the reasonable assessments for the elastic buckling strength and the ultimate strength has evolved. The numerical series analysis with the consideration of the effect due to various aspect ratios and slenderness ratios were performed using finite element method in this research. Simple formulas for the design are also proposed from the above analysis.

  • Recently, the probability of collision accident between vehicles or vessels and infrastructures are increasing at alarming rate. Particularly, collision impact load can be detrimental to sub-structures such as piers and columns. The damaged pier from an impact load of a vehicle or a vessel can lead to member damages, which make the member more vulnerable to impact load due to other accidents which. In extreme case, may cause structural collapse. Therefore, in this study, the vehicle impact load on concrete compression member was considered to assess the quantitative design resistance capacity to improve, the existing design method and to setup the new damage assessment method. The case study was carried out using the LS-DYNA, an explicit finite element analysis program. The parameters for the case study were cross-section variation of pier, impact load angle, permanent axial load and axial load ratio, concrete strength, longitudinal and lateral rebar ratios, and slenderness ratio. Using the analysis results, the performance based resistance capacity evaluation method for impact load using satisfaction curve was developed using Bayesian probabilistic method, which can be applied to reinforced concrete column design for impact loads.

  • This paper is a part of a research aimed at the verification of basic design rules of high-strength concrete columns. A total of 32 column specimens were tested to investigate structural behavior and strength of eccentrically loaded reinforced concrete tied columns. Main variables included in this test program were concrete compressive strength. steel amount, eccentricity, and slenderness ratio. The concrete compressive strength varied from 356 kg/$cm^2$ to 951 kg/$cm^2$ and the longitudinal steel ratios were between 1.13 % and 5.51 %. Test results of column sectional strength are compared with the results of analyses by ACI rectangular stress block, trapezoidal stress block, and modified rectangular stress block. Axial force-moment-curvature analysis is also performed for predicting axial load-moment strength and compared with the test results. The ACI rectangular stress block provides over-estimated column strengths for the lightly reinforced high strength column specimens. The calculated strengths by moment-curvature analyses are highly affected by $k_3$ values of the concrete stress-strain curve. Observed failure mode. concrete ultimate strain, and stress block parameters are discussed.

  • Most studies on the vibration analysis of a beam-column with ends elastically restrained and various intermediate constraints have been based on the Euler beam theory, which is inadequate for beam-columns of low slenderness ratios. In this paper, analytical methods for vibration and dynamic sensitivity of a Timoshenko beam-column with ends elastically restrained and various intermediate constraints are presented. Firstly, an exact solution method is shown. Since the exact method requires considerable computational effort, a Rayleigh-Ritz analysis is also investigated. In the latter two kinds of trial functions are examined for comparisions : eigenfunctions of the base system(the system without intermediate constraints) and polynomials having properties corresponding to the eigenfunctions of the base system. The results of some numerical Investigations show that the Rayleigh-Ritz analysis using the characteristic polynomials is competitive with the exact solutions in accuracy, and that it is much more efficient in computations than using the eigenfunctions of the base system, especially in the dynamic sensitivity analysis. In addition, the prediction of the changes of natural frequencies due to the changes of design variables based on the first order sensitivity is in good agreements with that by the ordinary reanalysis as long as the changes of design variables are moderate.

  • Fixed connection is generally used for beam and column connections of concrete structures, but significant damages at the connection due to severe earthquakes have been reported. In order to reduce damages of the connection and improve seismic performance of the connection, several innovative connections have been suggested. One newly proposed connection type allows a rotation of the connection for applications in rotating or rocking beams, columns, and shear walls. Such structural elements would provide a nonlinear lateral force-displacement response since their contact depth developed during rotation is gradually reduced and the stress across the sections of the elements is non-linearly distributed around a contact area, which is called an elastic hinge region in the present study. The purpose of the present study is to define the elastic hinge region or length for the rocking columns, through investigating the cross-sectional stress distribution during their lateral behavior. Performing a finite element analysis (FEA), several parameters are considered including axial load levels (5% and 10% of nominal strength), different boundary conditions (confined-ends and cantilever types), and slenderness ratios (length/depth = 5, 7, 10). The FEA results showed that the elastic hinge length does not directly depend on the parameters considered, but it is governed by a contact depth only. The elastic hinge length started to develop after an opening state and increased non-linearly until a rocking point(pre-rocking). However, the length did not increase any more after the rocking point (post-rocking) and remained as a constant value. Half space model predicting the elastic hinge length is adapted and the results are compared with the numerical results.

  • This study using a method different from those employed previously, the anatomical characteristics of paper-mulberry wood were confirmed by observing three different sections. In addition, the factors affecting the pulp and papermaking processes were analyzed in terms of morphological properties such as the fiber length and width, lumen width, and chemical composition of the paper-mulberry bast fiber. The anatomical characteristics of the paper-mulberry wood were a ring porous or semi-ring porous structure with the vessels showing solitary pore and radial array. The medullary ray of the tangential section showed 1-3 rows and common helical thickening. Consequently, the paper-mulberry wood has the same anatomical characteristics throughout. The morphological characteristics of the paper-mulberry bast fiber are a fiber length of 6.58 to 9.01 mm, fiber width of 15.85 to $27.80{\mu}m$, lumen width of 4.50 to $12.54{\mu}m$. The D sample of Gangwon was the most suitable for the pulp and papermaking processes, in terms of its derived morphological ratios. Comparing the chemical compositions, the C sample of Gyeongsang had a high holocellulose content (90%). Thus, the findings herein will aid in determining the quality of Korean paper post production.
