  • In an experimental and analytical study on the structural behavior of slender circular steel-concrete composite columns, eleven specimens were tested to investigate the effects of three ways to apply a load to a column. The load was applied eccentrically to the concrete section, to the steel section or to the entire section. Three-dimensional nonlinear finite element models were established and verified with the experimental results. The analytical models were also used to study how the behavior of the column was influenced by the bond strength between the steel tube and the concrete core and the by confinement of the concrete core offered by the steel tube. The results obtained from the tests and the finite element analyses showed that the behavior of the column was greatly influenced by the method used to apply a load to the column section. When relying on just the natural bond, full composite action was achieved only when the load was applied to the entire section of the column. Furthermore, because of the slenderness effects the columns did not exhibit the beneficial effects of composite behavior in terms of increased concrete strength due to the confinement.

  • The purpose of present research is to develop and efficient numerical method for the calculation of potential flow and predict the wave-making resistance for the application to ship design of tuna purse seiner. Havelock was considered the wave resistance of a post extending vertically downwards through the water from the surface, its section by a horizontal plane being the same at all depths and having its breadth small compared with its length. This enables us to elucidate certain points of interest in ship resistance. However, the ship has not infinite draft. So, the problem which is investigated ind detail in this paper is the wave resistance of a mathematical quadratic model in a uniform stream. The paper deals with the numerical calculation of potential flow around the series 60 with forward velocity by the new slender ship theory. This new slender ship theory is based on the asymptotic expression of the Kelvin-source, distributed over the small matrix at each transverse section so as to satisfy the approximate hull boundary condition due to the assumption of slender body. The numerical results using the panel shift method and finite difference method are compared with the experimental results for wigley mono hull. There are no differences in the wave resistance. However, it costs much time to compute not only wave resistance but also wave pattern over some range of Froude numbers. More improvements are strongly desired in the numerical procedure.

  • A linearised buckling analysis of thin-walled beams is addressed in this paper. Beam theories formulated according to a unified approach are presented. The displacement unknown variables on the cross-section of the beam are approximated via Mac Laurin's polynomials. The governing differential equations and the boundary conditions are derived in terms of a fundamental nucleo that does not depend upon the expansion order. Classical beam theories such as Euler-Bernoulli's and Timoshenko's can be retrieved as particular cases. Slender and deep beams are investigated. Flexural, torsional and mixed buckling modes are considered. Results are assessed toward three-dimensional finite element solutions. The numerical investigations show that classical and lower-order theories are accurate for flexural buckling modes of slender beams only. When deep beams or torsional buckling modes are considered, higher-order theories are required.

  • This paper presents an experimental study on the behavior of axially-loaded steel RHS (rectangular hollow section) compression members that are partially reinforced along their lengths with welded steel plates. 28 slender column tests were carried out to investigate the effects of the slenderness ratio of the unreinforced member and the ratio of the reinforced length of the member to its entire length. In addition to the slender column tests, 14 stub-column tests were conducted to determine the basic mechanical properties of the test specimens under uniform compression. Test results show that both the compressive strength and stiffness of an RHS member can be increased significantly compared to its unreinforced counterpart even when only the central quarter of the member is reinforced. Based on the limited test data, it can be concluded that partial reinforcement is, in general, more effective in members with larger slenderness ratios. A simple design expression is also proposed to predict the compressive strength of RHS columns partially reinforced along their length with welded steel plates by modifying the provisions of AISC 360-10 to account for the partial reinforcement.

  • The objective of this paper is to develop a simplified method that could predict the strength of concrete filled steel tube (CFT) columns applicable to high strength material under combined axial compression and flexure. The simplified method for determining the strength of CFT columns is based on the interaction curve of the section approached by a polygonal connection of the points. These points are determined by using symmetrical properties of the CFT section. For each point, a simple equation is proposed to determine the strength of the slender columns under compression and flexure. The simple equation was adjusted with results of elasto-plastic analysis results. Validation of the simplified method is undertaken by comparison with data from the test conducted at Kyushu University. These results confirm the fact that the simplified method could accurately and reliably predict the strength of CFT columns under combined axial compression and flexure.

  • For aerodynamic design of missile bodies of non-circular cross-section, the combination of the slender body theory and the cross-flow analogy can hardly be applied owing to the lack of experimental data. An alternative is to utilize the Euler solution in the design stage. For enhanced accuracy, however, an adequate viscous correction is necessary to the Euler solution. In this work, such a procedure is examined to compensate the viscous effect by utilizing the concept of proportionality factor in cross-flow analogy. Predictions of aerodynamic coefficients combining the Euler solution and the viscous correction via proportionality factor are made for a missile body of elliptic cross-section. Results indicate that the present approach can be adopted in designing missile bodies of non-circular cross-sections.

Some numerical results for series 60, C sub(b) =0.6, hull are presented in this paper. The wave pattern and wave resistance are computed at two Froude numbers, 0.267 and 0.304. These results are better than those of Michell's thin ship theory in comparison with measured results. However, it costs much time to compute not only wave resistance but also wave pattern over some range of Froude numbers. More improvements are strongly desired in the numerical procedure.

  • The tube outward local buckling of Concrete-Filled Steel Tube (CFST) beam under high compression stress is still considered a critical problem, especially for steel tubes with a slender section compared to semi-compact and compact sections. In this study, the flexural performance of stiffened slender cold-formed square tube beams filled with normal concrete was investigated. Fourteen (14) simply supported CFST specimens were tested under static bending loads, stiffened with different shapes and numbers of steel stiffeners that were provided at the inner sides of the tubes. Additional finite element (FE) CFST models were developed to further investigate the influence of using internal stiffeners with varied thickness. The results of tests and FE analyses indicated that the onset of local buckling, that occurs at the top half of the stiffened CFST beam's cross-section at mid-span was substantially restricted to a smaller region. Generally, it was also observed that, due to increased steel area provided by the stiffeners, the bending capacity, flexural stiffness and energy absorption index of the stiffened beams were significantly improved. The average bending capacity and the initial flexural stiffness of the stiffened specimens for the various shapes, single stiffener situations have increased of about 25% and 39%, respectively. These improvements went up to 45% and 60%, for the double stiffeners situations. Moreover, the bending capacity and the flexural stiffness values obtained from the experimental tests and FE analyses validated well with the values computed from equations of the existing standards.
