Well-feathered (over 10 feathers) 'Fuji'/M.9 apple trees were planted at $3.0{\times}1.0m$ and trained to slender spindle with 2.5 m height or to tall spindle with 3.5 m height, and the vegetative growth, productivity, and fruit quality of two training systems were compared for 8 years. The canopy volume of the tall spindle trees surpassed that of the slender spindle trees 4 years after planting and was 25% larger than that of the slender spindle trees 5 years after planting. The accumulated yield over 8 years for the tall spindle system was 14% higher than that of the slender spindle system. Alternate bearing and incidence of marssonina blotch were observed in both treatments after 5 years of planting. There was often vegetative imbalance in the trees however, the degree of yield loss and vegetative imbalance of the tall spindle trees was lower than those of the slender spindle trees. Soluble solid content and fruit red color of the tall spindle trees were higher than that of the slender spindle trees in 5 year after planting, resulting from increased light penetration in the canopy due to even distribution of lateral branches and from fruit bearing in different height locations of the trees. In conclusion, increasing the tree height to about 3.5 m using slender spindle 'Fuji'/M.9 apple trees planted with over 333 trees per 10a led to better light penetration, yield and fruit quality compared to a conventional wide training system with the slender spindle.
The slender shinner (Pseudopungtungia tenuicorpa), a tiny freshwater fish of about 8 to 10 cm belonging to Cyprinidae, is an endangered species found only in the Han and Imjin Rivers on the Korean Peninsula. During the breeding season, this species spawns in nests of Coreoperca herzi, a predator of this species, or small crevices on rocks. This unique reproductive ecology can make this species more vulnerable to anthropogenic perturbance that can further limit the places to spawn. Here, mtDNA and microsatellite loci were analyzed to identify the genetic diversity and structure of slender shinners and further to provide the basic data necessary for the conservation planning of this species. A total of 28 polymorphic microsatellite markers were developed using Illumina paired-end sequencing, and 67 slender shinners collected from three localities in the Han River were genotyped using these loci. This species showed a remarkably high level of genetic diversity with mean expected heterozygosity of 0.914 and mean allele number per locus of 27.9, and no signature of drastic demographic decline was detected. As a result of our microsatellite analysis, the genetic structure between the two stems of the Han River, North Han and South Han, was prominent. Such a genetic structure was also evident in the sequence analysis of 14 haplotypes obtained from mtDNA control region. Although slender shinners are only found in very limited areas around the world, the genetic structure indicates that there is a block of gene flow among the populations, which should be reviewed in the future if management and restoration of this species is needed.
This study covers the selection of systems measuring the behaviour of the slender structure in the underwater environment and its performance assessment. From a comparison of an instrumentation system that can measure the continuous behaviour along the entire length of the slender structure, the underwater camera system is finally selected as the most appropriate semi-permanent measurement system for Deep-sea Ocean Engineering Basin of KRISO. An experiment on the rigid pipes for a basic performance evaluation of the underwater camera is conducted in this study. The motion of a top excited rigid pipe is measured with the utilization of the underwater camera system. The performance of the underwater camera is evaluated by comparing the movement of a pipe measured by the underwater camera with the measured input signals. Through the top excitation experiment for the slender structure, the real-time three-dimensional measurement of the underwater camera system is qualitatively evaluated in this case. The developed underwater camera system can apply to the system to measure dynamic behaviour of a slender structure and mooring line in Deep Ocean Engineering Basin.

The practical computer program COL3 was developed through this study to design of arbitrarily shaped reinforced concrete slender columns subjected to combined compression and biaxial bending. The program COL3 has been developed for user-friendly environment using spreadsheets. Several examples including for analysis of geometrically complex column sections subjected biaxial bending are introduced in this paper.

In a slender column under sustained eccentric compression, the deformations caused by creep and shrinkage can lead to an increase in the loads on the structure and a reduction in strength. This study presents a methodlogy and improved computer program for the analysis of time-dependent long column in considering slender effects and nonlinear behaviors. In this result, when slenderness ratio is greater than 80, we know that magnified moment methods may be not applied in long columns.

In case of the slender mass concrete like attached wall, retaining wall and bridge tower, the low heat cement and the control joint are mainly used for thermal cracking control. However, even if these cracking control methods are considered, it is impossible to control thermal cracks perfectly, because the external restraint is largely in these mass concrete. Because these cracks occurring in slender mass concrete members almost penetrate concrete member, the special cracking control is demanded in these mass concretes. The vertical pipe cooling method improving existing pipe cooling method was developed for the active thermal cracking control of slender mass concrete, and applied at the field attached wall. In results, the maximum temperature dropped more than $10^{\circ}C$ by vertical pipe cooling method, and the cracks decreased about more than 50%.

In this paper, a series of experiments for the evaluation of flexural resistance of longitudinally stiffened plate girder with slender web were conducted. For the purpose, four plate girder specimens with and without longitudinal stiffener were fabricated for the web slenderness of 219 and 156. The test results were compared with the current AASHTO LRFD and Eurocode 3 codes, respectively. As presented in the previous paper by the authors, it was acknowledged that the AASHTO LRFD code could considerably underestimate the flexural resistance of longitudinally stiffened girder with slender web and the proposed method in the previous paper could estimate the flexural resistance reasonably.

In this study, side force, drag, and the yawing moment were measured based on the angle of attack by using two models of different nose shapes with slender bodies, which were general shapes in the subsonic area. As a result, the side force and yawing moment were the highest at a specific angle of attack. The boundary between asymmetrical normal state and asymmetrical abnormal state were able to be seen. As a result of analyzing the side force, drag, and yawing moment by time, reliability varied depending on the shape of the head at the same angle of attack. The results of measuring pressure distribution from the surface of the slender body at each angle of attack were as follows: as the angle of attack gets higher, the distribution of surface pressure was asymmetrical.
An experimental study was performed for thin-walled rectangular concrete-filled tubular (CFT) columns. The present study mainly focused on evaluation of the axial load-carrying capacity of concrete-filled tubular columns using high-strength steel and slender section. The test parameters were width-to-thickness ratio, concrete strength, steel yield strength, and the use of stiffeners. Five specimens were tested under monotonic axial loading. Although elastic local buckling occurred in the slender-section specimens with high-strength steel, the specimens exhibited considerable post-buckling reserve. The test results also satisfied the predictions of a current design code. The specimens strengthened with vertical stiffeners exhibited improved strength and ductility when compared with the un-stiffened specimens.

This study aims to develop a robot vision control scheme using the Newton-Raphson (N-R) method for the uncertainty of circumstance caused by the appearance of obstacles during robot movement. The vision system model used for this study involves six camera parameters (C1-C6). First, the estimation scheme for the six camera parameters is developed. Then, based on the six estimated parameters for three of the cameras, a scheme for the robot's joint angles is developed for the placement of a slender bar. For the placement of a slender bar for the uncertainty of circumstances, in particular, the discontinuous robot trajectory caused by obstacles is divided into three obstacle regions: the beginning region, middle region, and near-target region. Then, the effects of obstacles while using the proposed robot vision control scheme are investigated in each obstacle region by performing experiments with the placement of the slender bar.
