  • RC flat plate, which has no large flexural stiffness by boundary beams, may be governed by serviceability as well as strength condition. A construction sequence and its impact on distributions of construction loads among slabs tied by shores are decisive factors on immediate and long term performances of flat plate. The over-loading and tensile cracking in early-aged slabs significantly increase the deflection of flat plate system. In this study, for slab deflections, the practical analysis scheme using a linear analysis program is formulated with considering construction sequence and concrete cracking effects. The concept of the effective moment of inertia in calculating deflections of one-way bending member, that is presented in structural design codes, is extended to the finite element analysis of the two-way slab system of flat plates. Effects of over-loads during construction on deflections of flat plate system are analyzed by applying the proposed practical analysis scheme into the critical construction load conditions calculated from the simplified method.

  • A proposal of the basic fbrm on the design of joint parts that can increase the shear strength by the useful joint shapes of each member is intended. The vertical joint parameters are the number of' shear key and a variety of' reinfbrcement details and the horizontal joint paramctcrs arc t,hc number of shear key and the direction of' shear f'orcc. 10 PC panel vortical joint arid 12 PC panel horizontal joint specimens were tested to investigate the effects of these parameters. Test results show that : 1. The ductility of the test specimen that has the horizontal reinforcing steels is larger than that does not have. 2. The maximum resisting force of round bar specimen is similar to that of strand wire specimen under the condition of fixed horizontal displacement.

  • Commonly in steel frames, steel beam and concrete slab are connected together by shear keys to work as a unit member which is called composite beam. When a composite beam is subjected to positive bending, flexural strength and stiffness of the beam can be increased due to "composite action". At the same time despite these advantages, composite action increases the strain at the beam bottom flange and it might affect beam plastic rotation capacity. This paper presents results of study on the rotation capacity of composite beam connected to Rectangular Hollow Section (RHS) column in the steel moment resisting frame buildings. Due to out-of-plane deformation of column flange, moment transfer efficiency of web connection is reduced and this results in reduction of beam plastic rotation capacity. In order to investigate the effects of width-to-thickness ratio (B/t) of RHS column on the rotation capacity of composite beam, cyclic loading tests were conducted on three full scale beam-to-column subassemblies. Detailed study on the different steel beam damages and concrete slab damages are presented. Experimental data showed the importance of this parameter of RHS column on the seismic behavior of composite beams. It is found that occurrence of severe concrete bearing crush at the face of RHS column of specimen with smaller width-to-thickness ratio resulted in considerable reduction on the rate of strain increase in the bottom flange. This behavior resulted in considerable improvement of rotation capacity of this specimen compared with composite and even bare steel beam connected to the RHS column with larger width-to-thickness ratio.

  • In recent years, the investigation on the development of fiber reinforced plastic(FRP) Re-Bar has been greatly increased due to the attractive physical and mechanical properties of FRP. The primary reason of such a tendency is in the fact that it does not ordinarily cause durability problems such as those associated with steel reinforcement corrosion. This study is an experimental investigation on the flexural behavior of one-way concrete slabs, which can be used to construct bridge deck, reinforced with GFRP Re-Bar bundle. The tensile tests of GFRP Re-Bar produced by domestic industry and third point bending tests of one-way slab specimens reinforced with GFRP Re-Bar bundle are peformed. For all slab specimens, load-deflection relations are predicted by using the ACI committee 440 and the results are compared with experimental ones. In order to establish the design criteria or guidelines of concrete flexural member reinforced with FRP Re-Bar, it is needed to evaluate the serviceability limit state as well as the strength limit state.

  • To take advantage of reduced on-site construction periods and minimize traffic impacts various types of steel grid composite deck have been developed since 1930's. Modular prefabricated unfilled grid decks permit a long-distance transportation and construction under unfavorable condition, for example, in mountainous regions due to its comparatively light-weighter structure than fully filled grid deck. In this study bending tests of unfilled grid decks for the deck member of various kinds of infrastructure are carried out, bending strength and behaviour of composite action are experimentally evaluated. In this bending test, design variables are considered, such as type of shear connection between steel grid and concrete slab, spacing between cross bars and thickness of concrete slab. Through test results bending strength and behaviour of composite action are evaluated, reference data for proper type of shear connection and other details of the deck, such as spacing between cross bars, are obtained.

  • A growing attention has been paid to the optimum design of structures in recent years. Most studies on the optimum design of reinforced concrete structures has been mainly focussed to the design of structural members such as beams, slabs and columns, and there exist few studies that deal with the optimum design of large-scale concrete shell structures. The purpose of the present investigation is, therefore, to set up an efficient optimum design method for the large-scale reinforced concrete cylindrical shell structures like intake tower of reservoir. The major design variables are the dimensions and steel areas of each member of structures. The construction cost which is compo8ed of the concrete, steel, and form work costs, respectively, is taken as the objective function. The constraint equations for the design of intake-tower are derived on the basis of strength design method. The results obtained are summarized as follows 1. The efficient optimlzation algorithrns which can execute the automatic optimum design of reinforced concrete intake tower based on the strength design method were developed. 2. Since the objective function and design variables were converged to their optimum values within the first or second iteration, the optimization algorithms developed in this study seem to be efficient and stable. 3. When using the strength design method, the construction cost could be saved about 9% compared with working stress design method. Therefore, the reliability of algorithm was proved. 4. The difference in construction cost between the optimum designs with substructures and with entire structure was found to be small and thus the optimum design with substructures may conveniently be used in practical design. 5. The major active constraints of each structural member were found to be the 'bending moment constraint for slab, the minimum longitudinal steel ratio constraint for tower body and the shearing force, bending moment and maximum eccentricity constraints for footing, respectively. 6. The computer program developed in the present study can be effectively used even by an uneiperienced designer for the optimum design of reinforced concrete intake-tower on the basis of strength design method.

  • Post-tensioned prestressed concrete members experience immediate prestress losses as well as time-dependent prestress losses such as creep, dry shrinkage and relaxation. In addition, the stress of the upper and lower parts of the member changes due to the change in dead load due to the replacement of the upper slab and/or pavement. Such changes in fiber stress may affect the safety of the member, and it is necessary to adjust the prestressing force. Therefore, in this study, a screw type of re-tensioning post-tension kit is proposed, and it is verified that the safety against load and the stability against strain are satisfied through the load transfer test specified in EAD160004 and KCI-PS101.

  • In the composite beam subjected to the hogging moment it is very difficult to evaluate the influence of the reduction of slab stiffness due to cracks and their development on the horizontal shear behavior of shear connection. In this study, a 3D FE model is developed by which one can analyze the composite action in the composite beam subjected to the hogging moment. In this FE model, each structural member and shear connection are modeled as similar as possible to details of the composite beam. Bending behaviour, and composite action which could not be analyzed using the existing 1D or 2D FE model are investigated by the 3D model. Analysis results show that the reinforcement ratio and crack behaviour of the slab are main factors which exert a strong influence on the composite action. According to the analysis results about load-slip behavior, initial crack of slab and yielding of rebars have a influence on the slip stiffness of shear connection. The existing experimental results, that the design of partial interaction can be more efficient in designing of shear connection of the composite beams, are indirectly verified by the FE analysis.

  • This study is to propose a modified equivalent frame model for flat plate slabs under lateral loads. ACI 318 (2002) allows equivalent frame methods to conduct two-way slab system analysis subjected to gravity loads as well as lateral loads. Since the equivalent frame method in the ACI 318 (2002) has been developed base on the behavior of two-way system for gravity loads, and nay not predict the behavior of flat plate slabs under lateral loads with good precision. This study develops a modified equivalent frame model which can give more precise answer for flat plate slabs under lateral loads. This model reflects the actual force transfer mechanism among the components of flat plate slab system, which are slabs, columns and torsional members, more accurately under lateral loads than existing equivalent frame models. The accuracy of this model is verified by comparing the analysis results using the proposed model with the results of finite element analysis. The analysis results of other existing models are included in the comparison. For this purpose, 2 story building having 3 spans in both directions is considered. Analytical results show that the modified equivalent frame model produces comparable drift and slab internal moments with those obtained from finite element analysis.

  • In the fabrication process of inverted multi-tee (IMT) slabs, concrete has to be poured twice due to its shape, which is a huge disadvantage as a precast member. To overcome this, a new technique for manufacturing IMT slabs using a slipform method has been recently developed. In this study, flexural and shear tests were carried out to investigate the structural performances of inverted multi-tee (IMT) slabs manufactured using slipform method. To this end, one flexural specimen and two shear specimens with topping concrete were fabricated, and their failure modes and crack patterns, and the slips that occurred between the precast slab and topping concrete were measured and analyzed in detail. In addition, the flexural and shear strengths of the specimens were evaluated by utilizing the structural design code, and a shear strength estimation method, which is suitable for composite IMT slabs with different concrete properties, was proposed for practical design. The IMT slab satisfied the nominal flexural strength calculated by the current design code, and the proposed method provided a good estimation of the shear strength of the specimens.
