  • It is essential to carry out appropriate site investigations for the accurate prediction of the geo-structure. However, the importance of the site investigation is often overlooked due to the time and expense constraints. In this study, several cases of geotechnical design perfromed in United States are introduced with the lessons about how the site investigations are planned, performed and applied for the actual design parameter determination. Based on the case studies presented herein, experienced geotechnical engineer should participate in site investigations from the planning stage through the final boring logs and utilize all the laboratory and field tests to have consistent input parameters for the soil constitutive models. Furthermore, it is also desired to have close relationship between construction industry and the academia to compensate their needs.

  • Offshore geotechnical site investigation of the seabed ground has been a key factor of the successful construction of various types of offshore structures like as sea-crossing bridges, submerged tunnels, and other marine facilities. Offshore investigations are not easy tasks because of the wave, wind, tidal ebb and flows, and others. Recent developments of offshore equipment including platforms and testing devices like as maine cone penetrator have inspired us to get more reliable characteristics of the seafloor. General information on the offshore site investigations and technical trends concerned are introduced.

  • This paper introduces the 'Smart Scoping for Environmental Investigations Technical Guide' issued by the US Environmental Protection Agency in 2018, which describes the use of smart scoping during lifecycle of remedial investigation projects. This paper also briefly summarizes the guidelines of soil and groundwater contamination investigation of South Korea. The smart scoping practices can support the development of a robust and realistic conceptual site model that is very useful for investigations and evaluations of the contaminated site. The application of evaluation tools relevant for the site-specific characteristics is important for the development of a conceptual site model. The smart scoping recommends the use of previous investigation data and implementation of best proven strategies for successful remedial investigation project. The use of smart scoping in contaminated site investigation will provide better management of contaminated sites.

  • The efficient maintenance and management of steep slopes often require excessive professional resources and quantitative investigations. Therefore, it is important to develop technology for objective scientific site investigations and quantitative evaluations of steep slopes. This study proposes a 'Mobile System' for steep slopes in order to improve the effectiveness of site investigations compared with conventional methods using anevaluati on table. By analyzing site investigations and desktop studies, the required software and hardware are identified to develop the 'Mobile System', consisting of a 'Field Information Input System' and an 'Analysis System'. The applicability of the system is verified by its application to an area with steep slopes affected by debris flows. The use of this system is expected to increase the efficiency of maintaining steep slope sand to reduce the time and resources required.

  • Mean shear wave velocity of the upper 30m $(V_s30)$ used as the current site classification criterion for determining seismic design ground motions in Korea was established based on the typical depth of site investigations in western US, in which the depth to bedrock is much deeper than that in Korea. In this study, to establish appropriate site classification system for site conditions of Korea, site investigations including in-situ seismic tests to determine shear wave velocity $(V_s)$ were carried out at total 72 sites in Korean peninsula. The mean $V_s's$ to the depths of 5m, 10m, 15m, 20m and 25m together with the $V_s30$ at the testing sites were determined, and the correlation between the mean $V_s$ to a depth shallower than 30m and the $V_s30$ was drawn and suggested for the efficient seismic site classification in Korea. The proposed correlation could be utilized for the seismic design in case of the $V_s$ profiles shallower than 30 m in depth. The correlation in this study, nevertheless, requires further modification by means of the accumulation of various site data in Korea.

  • Recently resistivity survey is widely used for site investigations in the field of civil engineering. Since such application area requires accurate interpretation tools especially in the area of complicated geology and rough terrain topography, we developed a three-dimensional (3-D) resistivity inversion code, which can reconstruct real earth structures. Furthermore, the inversion code gives resolution-enhanced images by applying the ACB(Active Constraint Balancing) method. With the help of this inversion code, 3-D resistivity survey is now used as new techniques for site investigations in civil engineering problem. By imaging the 3-D resistivity distribution, we could get useful informations such as depth distribution of basement rock, distribution of weak zone, fractures and cavities which is crucial to civil engineers.

  • Considering importance and specificity, site investigations for deep geological disposal of Spent Nuclear Fuel require stringent quality control, unlike general geotechnical investigations for tunnels and bridges. In this study, we present a case of selecting geophysical survey method for individual site investigation stage and preparing geophysical survey guideline. The proposed geophysical survey guidelines include procedures, considerations, and quality control for exploration planning, data acquisition, data processing, and interpretation. They comprehensively summarize the contents of airborne electromagnetic survey and seismic reflection survey.

  • The comparative evaluation is the most effective method for site selection because the selection of waste treatment facility is to determine the optimum site out of limited candidate sites. This study adopted the ordinal scale evaluation, one of methods of comparative evaluation. The ordinal scale evaluation aims to determine the investigating items referring to the character of sites, to determine the importance factors for investigating items, and to determine the optimum site according to the quantitative evaluation. This study has focussed on reflecting the opinion of residents to the maximum extent with a weight on social and economic aspects, considering the state of confrontation against each other between the autonomous government organization and local residents, which is being emerged as a social issue relating to the evaluation rating on each item of site selection of an optimum site. Therefore, rational, and clear validity investigations and proper reduction of both time and expenses in site selection as well through this a study.
