  • BVR CCD observations of GW Cep were made on 15 nights in November through December 2008 with a 1-m reflector at the Jincheon station of the Chungbuk National University Observatory. Nineteen new times of minimum lights for GW Cep were determined and added to a collection of all other times of minima available to us. These data were then intensively analyzed, by reference to an O-C diagram, to deduce the general form of period variation for GW Cep. It was found that the O-C diagram could be interpreted as presenting two different forms of period change: an exclusively quasi-sinusoidal change with a period of 32.6 years and an eccentricity of 0.10; and a quasi-sinusoidal change with a period of 46.2 years and an eccentricity of 0.36 superposed on an upward parabola. Although a final conclusion is somewhat premature at present, the latter seems more plausible because late-type contact binaries allow an inter-exchange of both energy and mass between the component stars. The quasi-sinusoidal characteristics were interpreted in terms of a light-time effect due to an unseen tertiary component. The minimum masses of the tertiary component for both cases were calculated to be nearly the same as the $0.23-0.26M\;{\odot}$-ranges which is hardly detectable in a light curve synthesis. The upward parabolic O-C diagram corresponding to a secular period increase of about $4.12{\times}10^{-8}\;d/yr$ was interpreted as mass being transferred from the lesser to more massive component. The transfer rate for a conservative case was calculated to be about $2.66\;{\times}\;10^{-8}\;M_{\odot}/yr$ which is compatible with other W UMa-type contact binaries.

  • In most experimental researches on the liquefaction phenomenon, an earthquake as a random vibration has been regraded as a sinusoidal wave or a triangular wave with an equivalent amplitude. Together with the development in the part of signal control and data acquisition, dynamic experimental equipments in the soil dynamics have also developed rapidly and further more, several real earthquakes have been simulated in the large model test such as shaking table tests and centrifuge tests. In Korea, several elementary laboratory tests to simulate the real earthquake load were performed. From these test results, it was reported that the sinusoidal wave cannot reliably reflect the soil dynamic behavior under the real earthquake motion. In this study, 4 types of dynamic motions such as the sinusoidal wave, the triangular wave, the incremental triangular wave and several real earthquake motions which were classified with shock-type and vibration-type were loaded to find something new to explain the change of the excess pore water pressure under the real earthquake load. Through the detailed investigation and comparison on all test results, it is found that the dynamic flow is generated by the soil plastic deformation and the velocity head of dynamic flow is changed the pressure head in the un-drained condition. It can be concluded that the change of the excess pore water pressure is related to the pressure head of dynamic flow. Lastly, a new hypothesis to explain such a liquefaction initiation phenomenon under the real earthquake load is also proposed and verified.

  • Laser interferometry is widely used as a measuring system in many fields because of its high resolution and its ability to measure a broad area in real-time all at once. In conventional laser interferometry, for example out-of-plane ESPI (Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry), in plane ESPI, shearography and holography, it uses PZT or other components as a phase shift instrumentation to extract 3-D deformation data, vibration mode and others. However, in most cases PZT has some disadvantages, which include nonlinear errors and limited time of use. In the present study, a new type of laser interferometry using a laser diode is proposed. Using Laser Diode Sinusoidal Phase Modulating (LD-SPM) interferometry, the phase modulation can be directly modulated by controlling the laser diode injection current thereby eliminating the need for PZT and its components. This makes the interferometry more compact. This paper reports on a new approach to the LD (Laser Diode) Modulating interferometry that involves four-frame phase shift method. This study proposes a four-frame phase mapping algorithm, which was developed to have a guaranteed application, to stabilize the system in the field and to be a user-friendly GUI. In this paper, the theory for LD wavelength modulation and sinusoidal phase modulation of LD modulating interferometry is shown. Using modulating laser and research of measurement algorithm does comparison with existent ESPI measurement algorithm. Algorithm measures using GPIB communication through most LabVIEW 8.2. GPIB communication does alteration through PC. Transformation of measurement object measures through modulating laser algorithm that develops. Comparison of algorithm of modulating laser developed newly with existent PZT algorithm compares transformation price through 3-D. Comparison of 4-frame phase mapping, unwrapping, 3-D is then introduced.

  • The accurate calculation of run-up heights of long waves along the coastline is important in the view of engineering. In this paper the run-up heights of long waves are estimated by using the cnoidal wave theory which also covers both sinusoidal and solitary waves. However, the generation and the calculation of run-up heights of cnoidal waves are difficult both in laboratory and numerical experiments. In this study, the maximum run-up heights of cnoidal waves on steep slopes are computed by using the boundary integral equation model. It has been shown that the run-up heights of cnoidal waves are less than those of solitary waves, while they are larger than those of sinusoidal waves having the same wavelengths and heights. The variation of run-up heights of cnoidal waves is not a monotonic function of the wavelength. However, the run-up heights of cnoidal waves asymptotically approach that of a solitary wave as the wavelength approaches infinity. The calculated run-up heights agreed reasonably with experimental data.

  • In this paper we implemented DDFS and gam-phase dectector which use output of DDFS or any sinusoidal signal input to broaden the usability of DDFS. DDFS is composed of a 32 bits phase accumulator, phase increment registers, ROM and several registers for controlling the operations. It generates the digital data for sine wave up to the half of the clock frequency. To reduce the ROM size and increase the speed, we adopt the algorithms based on Taylor's series expansion method. Data at sparse phase intervals are stored in ROM and sine data between intervals are calculated in hardware. Function of Gain-Phase Extraction consists of sine lookup of DDFS and the optimized multipliers.

  • An exact spectrum wish no leakage error could be obtained when the period of the signal coincides perfectly with the record length. However, the record length will be determined regardless of the period of signal. The Leakage error due to this problem will gibe a distorted spectrum. In the conventional research, the method was proposed to estimate the three parameters, frequency, amplitude and phase angle, from the spectrum data for anundamped sinusoidal signal. In this paper, some techniques are proposed to estimate frequency, amplitude and damping ratios from the frequency response functions for damped signals. The validation of the proposed techniques is verified by several numerical examples.

  • In this paper we introduce novel electrode structure for high efficiency discharge. We operate discharge tube under the 0.16 torr pure Xe and apply the sinusoidal wave power to the lamp with 60kHz. We measure the electric power dissipation, plasma parameters, and 828 nm IR intensity. From these data we determine the discharge efficiency, IR intensity/watt, EEDF(Electron energy distribution function). As a result we obtain that the novel electrode structure has better performance in efficiency than that of conventional external electrode system. Also we determine the EEDF for each type of electrode structure by Boltzmann stover, EELNDIF code. The result of Boltzmann equation solving show that the noble electrode system has many high energy electrons compared with the conventional system.

  • A method for the identification of mechanical parameters based on integral calculation is presented. Both the moment of inertia and the friction constant are identified by the method developed here, which is based on well-known mechanical differential equations. The mechanical system under test is excited according to a pre-determined low-frequency sinusoidal motion, minimizing the distortion, and increasing the accuracy of the results. The parameters are identified using integral calculation, increasing the robustness of the results against measurement noise. Experimental data are supported by simulation, confirming the effectiveness of the proposed technique. The performance improvements shown here are of use in the design of speed and position controllers and observers. Owing to its simplicity, this method can be readily applied to commercial inverter products.

  • This paper describes a new voltage recorder for the voltage management of a power distribution line by using a new voltage measurement technique. The RMS(Root Mean Square) voltage measurement for the power line under the assumption of a sinusoidal input voltage is taken by the full-wave rectifier, half-adder utilizing operational amplifier(OP) circuit. A/D converter utilizing a dual slope converter converts an analog voltage signal into a serial pulse. The pulse is counted with a single chip micro-controller, converted with the RMS voltage, and saved into a flash memory. In the last, a new voltage recorder with compact size and multifunction is developed. Also, Voltage Management System that can analyze the stored data via RS-232C cable is developed based on Windows 95 and Visual C++.
