Sinusoidal Back-EMF of Vernier Permanent Magnet Machines

  • Sinusoidal back-EMF waveform of vernier Permanent Magnet (PM) machines is analyzed in this paper. An analytical expression of Electromotive Force (EMF) of electric machines including vernier machines is developed to analyze EMF harmonics, and the effect of vernier PM machine pole ratio, the ratio of number of rotor poles to stator poles, on the EMF waveform. Moreover, this paper represents several Finite Element Analysis (FEA) models to verify the analysis based on the proposed expression, and the effect of tooth width ratio, which is the ratio of tooth width to tooth pitch, on back-EMF of vernier PM machines, and optimal tooth width ratio is obtained and verified by FEA. Finally, this paper makes comparisons between EMF waveform of vernier PM machines and that of traditional PM machines from the point of view of analytical EMF expression.

  • In this paper the electromagnetic torque developed in IPMSM(Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor) is analyzed. If flux distributions in the motor are not sinusoidal, a sinusoidal current produces important torque ripple. Torque ripple causes vibration and noise of motors. The optimized current waveforms for ripple free is able to be obtained by analysis of Back-EMF and torque equation. The method to find the optimal current is based on numerical predetermination. In this paper proposes current waveform which can eliminate the torque ripple, and the validity is verified through the simulation.

  • This study investigates the design factors of Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor(IPMSM) which is applied to Hybrid electric vehicle as a driving power. Recently, there are many studies of IPMSM for application to Hybrid Electric Vehicle, because IPMSM has characteristics of high torque, high power density and high efficiency which come from reluctance torque due to difference of inductance as well as magnet torque. This study analyzes the inductance and design characteristics of IPMSM by using finite element method and focuses on design and analysis of IPMSM which can operates with high efficiency at low speed range. For this embodiment, magnet shape is changed from conventional block type to arc type without any change of outline dimension of motor and this change of magnet shape makes it possible to increase back EMF and sinusoidal waveform. Analysis results are verified by test of improved and embodied motor. As a test result , increased back EMF and sharply decrease of harmonics are secured and through this contribution of reduced fuel consumption of Hybrid electric vehicle is expected.

  • In this paper, the boost Power Factor Correction(PFC) technique for Direct Torque Control(DTC) of brushless DC motor drive in the constant torque region is implemented on a TMS320F2812DSP. Unlike conventional six-step PWM current control, by properly selecting the inverter voltage space vectors of the two-phase conduction mode from a simple look-up table at a predefined sampling time, the desired quasi-square wave current is obtained, therefore a much faster torque response is achieved compared to conventional current control. Furthermore, to eliminate the low-frequency torque oscillations caused by the non-ideal trapezoidal shape of the actual back-EMF waveform of the BLDC motor, a pre-stored back-EMF versus position look-up table is designed. The duty cycle of the boost converter is determined by a control algorithm based on the input voltage, output voltage which is the dc-link of the BLDC motor drive, and inductor current using average current control method with input voltage feed-forward compensation during each sampling period of the drive system. With the emergence of high-speed digital signal processors(DSPs), both PFC and simple DTC algorithms can be executed during a single sampling period of the BLDC motor drive. In the proposed method, since no PWM algorithm is required for DTC or BLDC motor drive, only one PWM output for the boost converter with 80 kHz switching frequency is used in a TMS320F2812 DSP. The validity and effectiveness of the proposed DTC of BLDC motor drive scheme with PFC are verified through the experimental results. The test results verify that the proposed PFC for DTC of BLDC motor drive improves power factor considerably from 0.77 to as close as 0.9997 with and without load conditions.

  • This paper deals with electromagnetic characteristics of IPMSM (Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous motor) caused by field weakening current control. In order to extend operation speed, field weakening current control is generally used in IPMSM operation. During field weakening, distorted linkage fluxes are resulted by saturation of core material. Therefore, distorted input voltage waveform is required for sinusoidal current input. As the current vector angle increases for field weakening, distortion of linkage flux and back-emf becomes significant. This situation is analyzed by 2-dimensional finite element analysis and verified by experiment. With the results, it is concluded that motor parameters, such as linkage flux by permanent magnet, phase resistance, d-q axis inductance, are insufficient for estimating required voltage for given speed especially in field weakening and additional considerations for increased harmonics of voltage are required.

A Five-Phase Induction Motor Speed Control System Excluding Effects of 3rd Current Harmonics Component

  • In this paper an effective five-phase induction motor (IM) and its drive methods are proposed. Due to the additional degrees of freedom, the five-phase IM drive presents unique characteristics for enhancing the torque producing capability of the motor. Also the five-phase motor drives possess many other advantages when compared to traditional three-phase motor drives. Some of these advantages include, reducing the amplitude and increasing the frequency of the torque pulsation, reducing the amplitude of the current without increasing the voltage per phase and increasing the reliability. In order to maximize the torque per ampere, the proposed motor has concentrated winding, the produced back electromotive force (EMF) is almost trapezoidal, and the motor is supplied with the combined sinusoidal plus the third harmonic of the currents. For demonstrating the superior performance of the proposed five-phase IM, the motors are also analyzed on the synchronously rotating reference frame. To supply trapezoidal current waveform and to exclude the effect of the $3^{rd}$ harmonic current, a new control stratagem is proposed. The proposed control method is based on direct torque control (DTC) and rotor flux oriented control (RFOC) of the five-phase IM drives. It is able to reduce the acoustical noise, the torque, the flux, the current, and the speed pulsations during the steady state. The DTC transient merits are preserved, while a better quality steady-state performance is produced in the five phase motor drive for a wide speed range. Experimental results clearly demonstrated a more dynamic steady state performance with the proposed control system.
