  • Reproduction of the soybean cyst nematode (SCN), Heterodera glycines Ichinohe on the susceptible soybean cultivar, Lee 74, was significantly reduced by pre-, post- and simultaneous treatments of acetylsalicylic acid (ASA, aspirin). The control efficiencies were 60%, 64% and 87% for pre-, post- and simultaneous treatments, respectively. ASA had no significant effect on the survival of 2nd stage juveniles and their penetration into the soybean root tissues, but significantly inhibited the early stage nematode growth in the roots. Syncytia were formed 2∼3 days after inoculation in the susceptible soybean without ASA treatment, characterized by dense cytoplasm and increased cellular organelles such as mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum. The nematode stylet was penetrated into the syncytial cell, and feeding tube was formed at the nematode stylet was penetrated into the syncytial cell, and feeding tube was formed at the nematode stylet entry. However, in the ASA treatments, syncytium was not formed or degenerated, depending on the root tissues. In the pre-treatments of ASA, nematode stylets did not penetrate into cells, showing callose-like cell wall thickening formed at the nematode probing sites, or retracted from the infected cells. The stylet penetration sites of syncytial cells appeared to be sealed off with fibrillar materials. With post-treatment of ASA, syncytia formed by the nematode were degenerated, characterized by degradation of syncytial cytoplasm.

  • Lemierre's syndrome is rare disease characterized by anaerobic sepsis, internal jugular vein thrombosis, septic emboli that resulted from head and neck infection. Lemierre's syndrome has significant morbidity, so immediate, accurate diagnosis and treatment is needed. It is necessary to perform contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) for diagnosis. Systemic antibiotics is recommended, and surgical interventions, anticoagulation may beis considered for treatment. We report misdiagnosed case as a simple deep neck infection on initial ultrasonography with simultaneous abscess aspiration but finally diagnosed and treated internal jugular vein thrombophlebitis (Lemierre's syndrome) on CT scan. We report a case of a 45-year-old patient, who was diagnosed with a simple deep neck infection and treated with simultaneous abscess aspiration, but finally diagnosed and treated internal jugular vein thrombophlebitis (Lemierre's syndrome) on CT scan.

  • Ankylosed tooth is defined as 'the discontinuance of normal passive tooth eruption without any mechanical barrier'. Ankylosed tooth treatment is a challenge to dental clinicians. In treatment of maxillary molar ankylosis cases there are risks of oro-antral fistula, displacement of root fragments into the maxillary sinus, as well as the necessity for providing additional sinus bone augmentation for future implant placement. In this study, we suggested a new technique using a piezoelectric device and a lateral side approach to the maxillary sinus leading to the simultaneous removal of the ankylosed maxillary molar and sinus grafting for the purpose of implant site development.

백서에서 셀레늄 및 아연이 카드뮴 독성에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Selenium and Zinc on the Toxicity of Cadmium in Rat)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the vairous change in the toxicity of cadmium by the simultaneous administration of selenium and zinc, which have been reported to change -the toxicity of cadmium through the interaction with cadmium, to rat. For the experiment, 42 rats of Sprague-Dawley strain were used. The experimental groups were divided into 6 groups: a control group, a cadmium (100ppm) alone treatment group, a cadmium (100ppm) and zinc (100ppm) combined treatment group, and three cadmium (100ppm), zinc (100ppm) and selenium (1, 4, and 8ppm) combined treatment groups. The rats were allocated seven to each group and observed for seven weeks. The results of experiment are as follows: 1. The food consumptions of each group were reduced, compared with a control group, especially, in a cadmium and zinc combined treatment group and a cadmium $\cdot$ zinc and selenium(1ppm) combined treatment group to the significant level compared with a control group (p < 0.05). The water consumptions of each group were reduced to the very significant level compared with a control group (p < 0.01). The feed efficiencies of each group were lower than a control group, and among them the highest group was cadmium $\cdot$ zinc and selenium (8ppm) combined treatment group as 90% of a control group. 2. In all groups, the weight gains were highest in the second week and the total weight gains were reduced to the very significant level compared with a control group (p < 0.01). 3. In all groups, the relative weights of liver were reduced, compared with a control group, especially, a cadmium alone treatment group was reduced to the significant level (p < 0.05). The relative weight of kidney was high to the significant level in a cadmium alone treatment group (p < 0.05) compared with a control group. In all groups, the relative weights of testis were reduced, compared with a control group, but the levels were not significant. 4. The accumulation of cadmium was highest in the kidney and the order of height was in liver, testis and blood, respectively. In all groups, the amount of cadmium accumulation was high to the very significant level compared with a control group (p < 0.01). In liver, the amount of acdmium accumulation in. a cadmium alone treatment group was high to the significant level compared with a cadmium $\cdot$ zinc and selenium (8ppm) combined treatment group (p < 0.05), and in kidney, the amount of cadmium accumulation in a cadmium alone tretment group was high to the very significant level compared with the cadmium $\cdot$ zinc and selenium (4, 8ppm) combined treatment groups (p < 0.01). However, in testis, among the treatment groups the level was not significant and in blood, a cadmium alone treatment group was low to the significant level compared with the cadmium $\cdot$ zinc and selenium (4, 8ppm) combined treatment groups (p < 0.05). 5. According to the histopathological finding on the testis, some of the seminiferous tubules of a group treated with cadmium alone showed severe necrosis and atrophy. But the testis of cadmium $\cdot$ zinc and selenium (8ppm) combined treatment group was similar to that of a control group. From the results of this study, it can be concluded that the repeated simultaneous oral administration of large doses of selenium with the cadmium produces the partial amelioration of cadmium toxicity, whereas zinc does not.

  • Conjugate heat transfer (CHT) is the simultaneous, coupled heat transfer within a fluid and an adjoining solid, and the interface treatment plays an important role in its analysis, particularly when using unstructured grid system. In the present paper a new solid-fluid interface treatment in CHT analysis is presented and applied to two typical CHT problems, i.e. natural convections in both concentric thick-walled cylinders and cavity with a centered solid body. The present interface treatment for unstructured mesh clearly demonstrates the same accuracy and robustness as that for typical structured mesh.

바이오에탄올 제조를 위한 억새의 암모니아-희황산 복합 전처리 (Combined Aqueous Ammonia-Dilute Sulfuric Acid Pretreatment of Miscanthus for Bioethanol Production)

  • Pretreatment of cellulosic biomass is necessary before enzymatic saccharification and fermentation. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of combined aqueous ammonia-dilute sulfuric acid treatment on cellulosic biomass. Miscanthus was pretreated using aqueous ammonia and dilute sulfuric acid solution under high temperature and pressure conditions to be converted into bioethanol. Aqueous ammonia treatment was performed with 15 %(w/w) ammonia solution at $150^{\circ}C$ of reaction temperature and 20 minutes of reaction time. And then, dilute sulfuric acid treatment was performed with 1.0 %(w/w) sulfuric acid solution at $150^{\circ}C$ of reaction temperature and 10 minutes of reaction time. The compositional variations of this combined aqueous ammonia-dilute sulfuric acid treatment resulted in 68.0 % of cellulose recovery and 95.7 % of hemicellulose, 81.3 % of lignin, 89.1 % of ash removal respectively. The enzymatic digestibility of 90.5 % was recorded in the combined pretreated Miscanthus sample and it was 14.7 times higher than the untreated sample. The ethanol yield in the Simultaneous Saccharification and Fermentation was 90.4 % of maximum theoretical yield based on cellulose content of the combined pretreated sample and it was about 98 % compared to the ${\alpha}$-cellulose ethanol yield.

당뇨쥐에서 다시마와 Metformin의 급여가 지질과산화물과 항산화영양소 함량에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Sea Tangle and Metformin on Lipid Peroxide and Antioxidants Levels in Diabetic Rats)

  • The present study was conducted to investigate te effect of sea tangle and hypoglycemic agent(Metformin) on lipid peroxidation and antioxidants levels in normal and diabetic rats. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed AIN-76 based experimental diets containing 5% (w/w) cellulose or 15%(w/w) sea tangle for 3 weeks, and then rats of diabetic groups were rendered diabetic by intramuscular injection of streptozotocin(STZ, 45mg/kg BW). After induction of diabetes Metformin(350mg/kg BW) was given once a day using a feeding tube for 5 days. Blood glucose level in diabetic rats fed sea tangle was significantly lower than that of diabetic rats fed cellulose. Metformin feeding resulted in further lowering blood glucose. Plasma and liver microsomal levels of lipid peroxides were increased significantly in diabetic rats as compared to normal rats, and the plasma level tended to be decreased by sea tangle feeding. Plasma level of retinol was reduced by STZ treatment, but it was increased by Metformin feeding in diabetic rats fed sea tangle. The liver contents of retinyl plamitate were reduced in diabetic rats but recovered by sea tangle feeding to some extent. Liver contents of total vitamin A were increased significantly by sea tangle in diabetic rats. Although difference in either plasma or liver level of $\alpha$-tocopherol by diet and STZ treatment was not significant, $\alpha$-tocopherol levels were the highest in the group with simultaneous feeding of sea tangle and metformin. Liver contents of zinc and copper were not influenced by either STZ treatment or sea tangle feeding. The present study indicates that the lowering blood glucose level could be attained by simultaneous trial of sea tangle diet and hypoglycemic agent and the increased oxidative stress caused by STZz treatment could be relieved by sea tangle feeding.

  • In this study, it was studied on dielectric breakdown strength and thennostability properties due to the structure variation of matrix resin and treatment of coupling agent of epoxy insulating materials. The interpenetrating network structure was formed by simultaneous heating curing the epoxy resin with single network structure and the methacrylic acid resin. Also inner structure was observed and the glass transition temperature was measured on these three type specimens. Dielectric breakdown properties were investigated by applying DC, AC and impulse voltage. As a result, the glass transition temperature and the dielectric breakdown strength of specimen with interpenetrating network structure was more higher than another two type specimens.

  • Enalapril (ENP) maleate is effective drug for the treatment of renivascular hypertension and heart failure. ENP acts as inhibitor of the enzyme angiotensin-convertase (ACE-inhibitor) and metabolized to enalaprilat (ENPT), which is the active metabolite that is really responsible for the therapeutic action. In the present study, a sensitive and rapid liquid chromatography/ electrospray ion trap tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS) method combined with high-throughput solid phase extraction (SPE) has been developed and validated for the simultaneous quantitative determination of ENP and ENPT in human plasma.   • Verapamil is a calcium channel blocker and is classified as a class IV anti-arrhythmic agent. It is used in the control of supra ventricular tachyarrhythmias, and in the management of classical and variant angina pectoris. It is also used in the treatment of hypertension and used as an important therapeutic agent for angina pectoris, ischemic heart disease, hypertension and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Verapamil commonly co-administered with NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) i.e. diclofenac sodium, flurbiprofen, Ibuprofen, mefanamic acid and meloxicam. A simple and rapid RP-HPLC method for simultaneous determination and quantification of verapamil and NSAIDs was developed and validated. The mobile phase constituted of acetonitrile: water (55:45) whose pH was adjusted at 2.7 and pumped at a flow rate of 2.0 mL $min^{-1}$ at 230 nm. The proposed method is simple, precise, accurate, low cost and least time consuming for the simultaneous determination of verapamil and NSAIDs which can be effectively applied for the analysis of human serum.
